That is no longer true with OBD systems. You need a TECH II or autotap to pull codes. Dont cross any of the pins on the connector, it wont do anything....

Could also be a dirty IAC. I had a simular problem just recently. I removed the IAC Valve, and soaked it down with carb cleaner, and it fixed my problem....
