Re: [jyturbo] 2009 Sunbeam Land Speed Attempts
I tend to think the stability being influenced more by what I call an
"aspect ratio": wheel base and track of the car. Long skinny cars (ie
stream liners) have a high aspect ratio while short wide cars are low
aspect ratio. I has to do with the displacement of the car in the rear
end when it start to slide out. A small change on a short wide car is a
big angle change through the cg while the same change on a high aspect
car is a small change in directional angle. Gives the drivers more
reaction time. One of my friends and associates at the time trial has a
keith black powered SAAB. He says it is so hard to drive that it needs a
driver with more balls.. He said it is really fun when you break a half
shaft at speed under full power... confirming your notion, lol... I am
currently working on a simulation model for my computer which will be a
full 6dof model trying to determine the importance of aspect ratio or
perhaps other factors for stability.

Another weird notion is that the fast cars have the weight bais which to
me sems backwards. Most are heavy in the rear. On the nature of 40/60
front to rear. I think that turns out to be more for traction than
stability though. Even after I added the weight to the sunbeam the
weight bias is 47/53. Not too bad. Because of where I placed the weight
mass, I made a 17% improvement in the cars moment of inertia, sometimes
called the polar moment of inertia. Hopefully that will give me the tiny
sliver of control to get through bad patches in the salt or where my
foot gets to heavy..
