From its beginning in 1972, until last unit produced in April 1997, Jaguar XJ12 was, no doubt, one of the greatest saloons ever produced.

Its smooth V-12 engine won hearts and minds, while other manufacturers installed into competing cars nothing more than V8's. Sadly, when others joined the game with 12 cylinder models (BMW, Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz) Jaguar abandoned its all time greatest engine April 17, 1997, and replaced it with supercharged V8, which lacks that finesse of traditional Coventry V12...

Perhaps the evolution of XJ12 reached its peak in X300 series (produced between 1994-1997), and

had as a model, only two alternatives to go.

Either endup as 48valve variant (as nowdays in Aston Martin DB7 Vantage), or be discontinued...

Unfortunately, Ford bosses, who understand nothing about elegant European engines, discontinued production of XJ12. Other kind of outcome might have created 420HP Jaguar XJ12.
