Did you know that the sunroof on your Series III XJ6 can be manually opened and
closed?
All you need is a special handle, supplied by Jaguar for this purpose.  The
handle
attaches to the sunroof motor in the trunk, allowing you to crank the roof panel
closed
in case the motor fails.  Handy to have, and CHEEEEP.  They are about $2.50 each
anywhere
that carries Jag parts.

The pre-1988 XJ6 and the XJS have a problem with the outer hubs on the IRS unit.
The
lower pivot point has a tendancy to crack. (Definition: The rear hub is the big
aluminum
unit that the rear wheel bolts up to.) Check these periodically, cleaning them
up if
necessary in order to see clearly.  A cracked rear hub can fail at speed, which
would be
a bad thing.

Steering Rack Bushing Upgrade

The XJS and the pre-88 XJ6 have a problem with rack bushing degradation.  These
bushings
hold the steering rack in place and absorb some of the road vibration. 
Unfortunately,
they tend to decay and fall apart given their usually hot and oily environment. 
The
permanent solution is a set of polyurethane rack bushings.  These restore the
sporty
steering your Jag is supposed to have, and they never degrade.  Some places
charge up to
$60 for these bushings. Don't pay it.  Shop around and find them for much less
and
upgrade your steering. Gee, I wonder where you can find them for less??? ;-)

I recently received this email:
> Looking to convert the A/C from R-12 to R-134a. I need to know
> what's involved, costs, etc. Apparently there's a kit from jag (or so
> says my dealer). They quoted me a price of $4000 for the kit and
> installation.

Folks, $4000 is more than I paid for my car!!! Let's clear up some confusion
about this
R134a stuff.  It's CHEAP and it works. There is no reason to pay obscene amounts
of money
to get your car converted to R134a.  Your local A/C professional can evacuate
and
recharge your A/C system with R134a, usually with no modifications at all.

What should you expect to replace?  The A/C Receiver/Dryer ($30-$80), and
_maybe_ a few O-
rings. Your A/C pro will handle the oil replacement and the recharge.  Don't get
suckered
into a huge repair bill just for R134a replacement.

Oh, and on that Jag kit, shop around. The kit is for 1975-current European
import cars,
including Jaguars, and it's $95 or so from your dealer. It's distributed by
Castrol, and
the Castrol part number is 26246.  Castrol calls it the "R134a Retro Kit" and it
has oil,
o-rings, and new fittings.  Not much for $95, IMHO.  Your A/C pro can probably
get a kit
for you much cheaper.

"What shocks are best for my car?" is a question I get asked
several times per week.  The answer is OEM shocks.  Your
Jaguar's ride was designed to take advantage of the damping
and rebound characteristics of the OEM shocks. Replacing them
with an aftermarket shock like Woodhead, Gabriel, Monroe, etc.
may affect your car's ride and handling, and your mood while
driving.  I tried to cheap out once and put one of these
brands on my car, and I was severly disappointed in the
resulting ride of my XJ6. The shocks, which were supposed to
be constructed to match the OEM guidelines, were WAY too soft.
I felt like I was driving a Chrysler land-yacht instead of a
sport-luxury Jaguar.  My car has Boge shocks on it now, and
I'm much happier.  The price difference isn't that much
(unless you buy them from a dealer.)

The Borg-Warner model 65/66 transmission was fitted to the 1980-1987 XJ6.  In
the U.S,
this transmission has developed a reputation for unreliability and short life.
Interestingly, in the U.K. this transmission has developed a reputation for
dependability
and long life.

In the U.K., car owners are trained (practically from birth) to regularly
service their
cars, including transmission fluid & filter changes.  In the U.S., with 100,000
mile
service intervals on the new cars, regular maintenance has received less
emphasis.

Hmmmmmmm......   There's a pattern here.  What we can learn from this is that
when
regularly serviced, including a fluid flush and filter change every 30,000 miles
(just
like it says in the owner's handbook) these transmissions can give a long and
dependable
service life.

Running the transmission with too much fluid or too little fluid can also cause
erratic
behavior, so check your transmission fluid level regularly.

For owners of cars with Antilock Braking System (ABS):

These cars have a very sensitive and very expensive valve body
that controls the ABS system.  The valve body does not
tolerate dirt and moisture well.  For this reason, Jaguar
recommends that cars with the ABS system have their braking
systems completely flushed with fresh brake fluid every year
to remove moisture and dirt.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which is a fancy way of saying
that it attracts and absorbs moisture from the air.  Dirt and
grit make their way past into the reservior from the top, and
past the caliper seals from the bottom.  This dirt and
moisture will work to destroy the ABS valve body.  A new valve
body is in the neighborhood of $1400-$1600, so it's worth
spending a couple of hours per year flushing your braking
system.

Jaguar engine cooling fans have a nasty habit of breaking.
I'm talking about the big plastic fan blade at the front of
the engine.  The typical scenario is that the fan clutch will
seize, causing the plastic fan to spin at full engine speed.
This puts a lot of stress on the plastic fan, which then
starts to crack at the base of the fan blade.  These cracks
rapidly spread until the fan explodes and bits fly all over
the engine bay.  New radiator, new hood, new fan, second
mortgage and you're all set to drive again.

Periodically, look at the fan and inspect it for cracks.  If
it's cracked, replace it fast.  At the same time, check your
fan clutch for proper operation.

The fan clutch is designed to allow the fan to slip and spin
slower than the engine.  There is a simple diagnostic
procedure:  With the engine off, give the fan a good hard spin
by hand.

If it's loose and spins for more than one full rotation, the
clutch is bad, allowing the fan to slip too much.  This can
contribute to an overheating problem.

If it's tight and doesn't continue to spin at all, the clutch
is seized and needs to be replaced.  A properly-functioning
fan clutch should allow the fan to spin 1/2-1 full rotation
when spun by hand.

Now that summer is rapidly approaching, you should keep a close watch on your
tires.
For years, Jaguar recommended the Pirelli tires for all Jags.  Many came with
the P5 as
original equipment, then the P4000.  We have reports from several people that
the Pirellis
have developed a tendancy to blister near the tread during hot-weather operation
(mostly in
VERY hot weather, like Texas.)  Please keep an eye on your tires this summer,
and
replace any that become blistered.
We have heard no reports of problems with anyone using the Michellin MXV4
series,
which came as standard equipment on many later-model XJS vehicles.

The dust boots on the ends of your steering rack must stay in
good condition.  Their function is to keep dirt and grit out
of your rack seals so the seals will last.  If the boots are
split, dirt and water will get in and attack the internal
seals, causing leaks and necessitating a rack rebuild.  Check
them at least twice per year for cracking and replace them if
they look suspicious.  At $15/set, they are cheeeeep insurance.

A side note, if there is power steering fluid inside the rack
boot, the seals are already shot and the rack needs to be
rebuilt or replaced.  There should never be any fluid inside
the rack boots.

The rear window on the XJS coupe has a tendency
to leak water imperceptibly.  The rear glass
seal is to blame.

Underneath the fuel tank is a rubber foam mat.
When the water leaks in, it drains down past the
fuel tank and collects in the rubber mat, then
starts to rust the bottom of the fuel tank.
This leads to many pinhole fuel leaks.  A new
fuel tank is over $500 (plus installation
labor,) so it pays to ensure that your rear
glass seal doesn't leak.

This week's tech bit is about ENGINE FIRES.

The Series III XJ6 and the XJS both have a
reputation for being "easily combustible."  The
typical cause of engine fires is a leaking or
ruptured fuel injector hose or fuel supply line.

On the Series III, there are two places that
you'll want to check periodically.  The first
place is the fuel injector hose attached to each
injector.  These short hoses are held on with
fuel injector clamps (not hose clamps.)  The
clamps can loosen over time, allowing fuel to
start leaking past the clamp.  Check these
clamps every few months to make sure they are
tight.  The second place to check is the fuel
supply line to the fuel rail.  Sometimes this
line can chafe against the battery, and wear a
thin spot in the hose.  Check it every few
months, and reroute it if possible to get it
away from the battery case.

The XJS also has two common fire cuprits.  The
first is the short fuel lines supplying each
injector.  The intense engine heat and the ozone
from the spark plug wires make these lines hard
and brittle, and easily ruptured.  If you can't
squeeze them with your fingers (with the engine
off, please,) or if they have any cracks
evident, then they are too hard and need to be
replaced.  The second fire culprit is the cap
and rotor on the Marelli ingition system.  The
Marelli ignition system was installed in the
middle of the '89 model year, and is
distiguished by the TWO coil wires going into
the distributor cap, rather than just one.  If
you have a Marelli ignition, only use the
factory cap and rotor, even though they are more
expensive than the aftermarket parts.  The
aftermarket parts are of significantly inferior
quality, and can't handle the electrical
current. These parts will eventually burn
through and cause an engine fire that will cause
so much damage that the insurance company will
probably total your car, even if the fire is
restricted to the top of the engine.  Check your
owner's manual, and replace the cap and rotor
according to Jaguar's mileage recommendations.
Marelli fires are legendary, and legendarily
expensive to repair.

_________________2.  Technical Information Bits

This week's tech bit is about air conditioning
condensation.

There is a drain pan inside the dash that
catches the a/c condensation and drains it out
through the floor of the car.  Over time, the
drain hoses will clog with dirt and general crud
and won't allow the condensation to drain.  This
is when you hear water running back and forth
inside your dash as you turn a corner, and
sometimes you'll collect so much water that it
will spill out on your (or your passenger's)
feet.  Fortunately, this is easy to remedy.

The drain pan has two rubber hoses connected to
it, and the water drains through these hoses to
the underside of the car.  Take a thin flexible
wire and run it up through the hoses from the
bottom of the car (you'll need to be under the
car) and this will clear the drain obstructions.
Caution:  if you've been hearing the water slosh
around, then once you run the wire up through
the rubber drain tubes, that water is going to
rush out and drain all over you if you're in the
way.

As always, whenever you jack your car up, put it
on suitable jack stands before you climb under
it.  Never get under a car supported by a jack
alone.  4,000 pounds falling on top of you will
ruin your day.

This week's tech bit is about head gaskets on
the 1988-1989 XJ6.

These headgaskets have a tendancy to leak oil.
There is a high-pressure old feed inside the
engine that supplies oil to the cams.  The oil
flows up from the oil pump, through a hole in
the head gasket, up into the head where the cams
sit.

1988 was the first year that Jaguar tried this
approach, before 1988 the camshaft oil feeds
were outside the head at the back of the engine.
Engines made in 1990 and later don't have this
problem.

If you have a '88 or '89 XJ6, check to see if
yours is leaking.  You'll probably have to clean
the engine off in order to see clearly.  The
leak is on the right side of the engine (the
exhaust side), up at the front near the
distributor.  You'll see a small trickle of oil
coming out and running down the engine.  The
ONLY cure is to replace the head gasket.
Retorqueing the head bolts won't work.

BONUS TECH BIT:
I've been asked several times this week about
replacing the self-levelling suspension with
standard shocks, and which kit to use.  We carry
two kits, one in a Jaguar box, and one in a
plain brown box.  They are almost the same kit,
with a couple of exceptions:

Exception 1:  The Boge shocks in the Jaguar box
have a Jaguar stamp on them, and because of
this, they have a one-year warranty.

The Boge shocks in the plain box don't have a
Jaguar stamp on them, and because of this they
have a LIFETIME warranty.


Exception 2:  The Jaguar-boxed kit has a new
upper mounting plate for the shocks.  This is
necessary because the top bolt for the standard
shocks has a smaller diameter than the top bolt
on the self-levelling shocks.  To fix this,
Jaguar provides a new top plate with a smaller
hole.

In the plain-boxed kit, you don't get the new
plate, but you do get a small bushing that goes
around the new shock bolt, and makes the shock
fit snugly inside the old shock plate.  This is
an acceptable work-around.

If I were buying a kit for my car, I'd buy the
plain-boxed kit, pay less money, and get the
lifetime warranty on the shocks.

This week's tech bit is about the oxygen sensor.

The oxygen sensor looks like a spark plug
screwed into your catalytic converter.  It's
actually an important part of your fuel
injection system.  The oxygen sensor (also
called a lambda sensor) continually tests the
level of oxygen in the exhaust stream, and feeds
this information back to the fuel injection
computer.  Too much oxygen means the engine is
running lean and the computer needs to send more
fuel to the cylinders.  Too little oxygen means
the engine is running rich and the computer
needs to send less fuel.  This fine-tuning
procedure goes on constantly to ensure the
proper air/fuel ratio.

A bad oxygen sensor will continually tell the
computer that the engine is too lean, and the
computer will respond by sending more fuel.
This is bad, not only for fuel economy and
emissions, but a rich mixture will eventually
burn out your catalytic converters, possibly
causing a fuel fire inside the exhaust system,
which can then spread to the rest of your car.
It's a bad thing.

According to Jaguar and the other auto
manufacturers, the oxygen sensor should be
replaced every 30,000 miles to ensure
troublefree performance.

There are two different types of oxygen sensors,
sensors with one wire and sensors with three
wires.  The three wire sensors have a built-in
heating element that brings the sensor up to
operating temperature quickly.  When you replace
the sensor, be sure to get the correct type for
your car.  If your Jag is less than 5 years old,
you may be able to get the oxygen sensor
replaced under warranty, even if the warranty
for the rest of the car has expired.  It's worth
checking out.  The V12-equipped cars have two
oxygen sensors, while the six-cylinder cars only
have one.

This week's tech bit is about the self-levelling rear
suspension used on the 1988-1994 XJ6.  These part-
hydraulic/part-pneumatic systems are prone to failure.
The typical failure mode is where the rear end of the
car "hunts" for the correct ride height, but doesn't
find it, and the rear of the car ends up bouncing up
and down continually.  Rolls Royce used this system
back in the '70s, and it didn't work well for them
either.  These systems are failure-prone and are
expensive to repair.  Because of this, Jaguar produced
a kit to remove the self-levelling rear suspension and
replace it with conventional shocks.  This kit contains
every part needed to affect the repair, including
springs, shocks, spring seats, nuts, etc.  There are
cheaper kits available, but they aren't worth messing
with.  These kits re-use the original springs and leave
the car sitting too low in the rear.  The original
springs were designed for the hydraulic shocks to
support some of the car's weight, and are therefore too
weak to support the car by themselves.  Stick with the
OEM conversion kit.  Our unwavering recommendation is
to never repair the self-levelling suspension, only
replace it with the OEM shock/spring kit.  You'll spend
at least as much on the repair as for the kit, only to
have the system fail again.  And again.

This week's tech bit is about purchasing windshields.

We don't sell windshields.  Ever.  They are too heavy and too
fragile to ship safely.  So where should you get them?  Not at the
dealer!  Usually we drive the "original equipment only" theme pretty
hard, but this is one area where you can get an aftermarket part
that's just as good as the OEM part and save yourself a bunch of
money in the process.  For example, my local dealer quoted me
over $400 for a new factory windshield for my 1985 XJ6.  My local
auto glass shop quoted me $135 for an aftermarket windshield.
Both meet DOT regulations, both fit the car perfectly, and one is
priced reasonably.  The $135 windshield has been satisfactory in
every way for the two years that I've had it.

This week's tech bit:  Bulb Failure Modules on the 1988-1994 XJ6

Bulb Failure Modules (BFMs) have a reputation of failure on XJ40s,
usually it's one of a few simple things.

1) Make sure that every bulb works!  The failure module is designed
to alert you that a bulb is out, so check this first. (Easy stuff first!)

2) Clean the bulb contacts in the sockets.  This is a pain, but this
too is a trouble spot. CRC spray electronics cleaner is a good tool
to use, and it's available everywhere.  Use it outside, please, we
don't want anyone poisoning themselves.

3) Brass-based bulbs tend to corrode more easily, so don't use
them.  The safest bet is to get all of your bulbs from Jaguar.

4) Hooking trailer lights to the lighting harness can also cause the
failure module to trigger.

5) Open up the modules and look for broken solder contacts.  This
is usually the problem with the failure module and can usually be
rectified easily with careful application of a soldering gun.

6)  Once all of these steps have been taken and the failure module
still acts up, you are usually stuck with replacing the failure module.

This week's tech bit:  Ride and Ride Height:
Springs and Shocks.

There is a specified height for each end of your
car.  The ride height and the method for
determining the ride height are both specified
in the factory service manual.

As our cars begin to age, the strength and
resilience of the suspension springs will fade,
and the car will gradually settle lower and
lower. This affects both handling and comfort
and changes your suspension geometry.  "It's a
bad thing" as some rich magazine publishing lady
told me.

The only cure for sagging ride height is to
replace the suspension springs.  There are short-
term bodges such as stuffing spring blocks into
the coils, but they are really an inappropriate
solution and can lead to rapid spring failure.

This is a dangerous job, even for professionals,
since it requires compressing the suspension
springs with a tool so that they may be
installed.  One slip, or a broken tool, and the
spring tension is explosively released, removing
whatever body part happens to be in its way. For
this reason, we recommend that you take your new
suspension springs and rear shocks to an insured
professional to have them installed.  You can
replace your front shocks without too much
trouble, but the rear shocks are coil-overs and
require the spring compressor.

Note:  Shocks have NO affect on ride height
whatsoever, only handling and comfort.  If your
car is sitting low, changing the shocks won't
make it any higher.  We do recommend replacing
rear shocks when you replace the rear springs.
You'll recoup the price of the shocks just in
labor savings.

I am not interested in parting out this car.  It is in excellent condition.
I recently replaced the front driver's side fender that had some rust and
even had the hood repainted.  It is navy blue with a grey leather interior
and it looks (and drives) like new.  The reason I'm selling ($8,000) is
that my uncle has a 1986 XJ-6 with 26,000 miles that I hope to purchase
once mine is sold.

I have a 4.2l v6 Jaguar engine that was purportedly seized when a mechanic
attempted to replace the bearings and grind the crankshaft that is for
sale.  It ran like a dream prior to the repair, but was leaking oil from
the rear main seal, necessitating the repair.  Interested parties should
make an offer.  The cylinder head is good and it has a new oil pump.

This week's tech bit:  Universal Joints

The universal joints on your Jag transmit power from the engine to
the wheels while allowing the suspension and the engine to move
about in their mountings.  Movement of metal parts implies that
something has to be greased to prevent failure.  U-joints are no
exception.  Failure to properly (and regularly) grease u-joints will
lead to metal-to-metal contact, and the eventual destruction of the
needle bearings in the u-joint, which requires replacement of the u-
joint.  Jag U-joints are cheap, but they are a royal bear to replace,
so it's in your best interest to grease them or have them greased
every 12,000 miles, or more often if you can. Pump grease into
them until fresh grease comes out of all four bearing cups.  It
usually helps to do this job right after you drive the car fast and
hard for a while, so everything is hot and the grease flows easiest.

When a u-joint starts to fail, it can sound like a brake pad is loose
and rubbing against the brake rotor, or it could generate a metallic
squeal or a rattling sound.  Or all three.  Once these symptoms
appear, there's no solution but to replace the offending u-joint.

The u-joints on the 1969-1987 XJ6 and on all XJSs are Chevy-spec
joints, so getting replacements is easy and cheap.  I haven't cross-
referenced the 1988-1994 XJ6 u-joints, but these are cheap enough
anyway.  To see the Spicer and NAPA part numbers for the Series

published by David Shields.  You can find a link to it from our links
page or from the XJ-lovers website.

This week's tech bit:  Repair Manuals

Repair manuals aren't just for mechanics.  They contain valuable information
that can help the average owner make informed decisions about car
maintenance and repair.  Every owner should have one.

There are several repair manuals to choose from for your Jaguar.  The best
manual is the factory "Service Operations Manual".  These multi-volume books
contain repair and service information about every system in your car.  The
downside is their cost and the fact that they are written for people who are
already familiar with auto service.  The factory manuals for the Series III and
the
XJS have been re-printed by outside agencies under license from Jaguar,
reducing their cost considerably.  The manuals for the 1988-1994 XJ6 (also
called the XJ40) are still only available from Jaguar and cost from $180 to $450
depending on the year of the car (ouch).

Haynes Publications produces manuals for practically every car on the road,
including the XJ6 and XJS.  These are not as good as the factory manuals, but
do contain most of the useful information you'll need to service your car. 
These
are written for the home-mechanic, so they are usually easier to understand
and have more pictures. They also contain mistakes, but nothing serious.
These run about $17 and are well worth the investment.

Jag owners sometimes experience antenna malfunctions,
and at the moment the antenna on my Series III won't go
down.  (editor's note:  you can usually keep track of
what's going wrong on my car by following the tech bits
articles) For the 1980-1987 XJ6 and XJS, the only
solution for a bad antenna unit is to replace the entire
antenna with a new factory or aftermarket unit.  For the
1979- 1980 XJ6, the antenna had a replaceable mast, but
Jaguar dumped this design and the replacement masts are
no longer available.

For the 1988-1994 XJ6 and XJS, Jaguar went to a modular
antenna manufactured by Hirschmann.  For these cars, you
can many times fix your antenna problem by replacing
just the mast and drive cable.  The antenna motor must
be removed, the antenna mast and drive cable pulled out
of the motor, and the new drive cable fed back in.  Then
the antenna assembly is reinstalled.  $26 for a
replacement mast and cable sure beats $300+ for a whole
antenna assembly.  If the drive cable is bad, you will
usually hear the antenna motor running, but the mast
won't move.

One other thing to check on a non-functioning antenna is
the relay (this is the part I think is bad on my car.)
The relay tells the antenna when to deploy and return,
and the relay can get sticky as it ages. Troubleshooting
relays is beyond the scope of this email, but it's not
difficult with a little patience and judicious perusal
of an auto electrical troubleshooting guide.

_________________3.  Technical Information Bits

Does the front of your car rattle and clunk when you drive over a rough section
of road?  Or, do your tires wear out along one edge?  It's time to take a look
at
your front end.  There are two common culprits when these things happen.

The first culprit is the upper shock bushings.  These hard rubber rings isolate
the shock absorber from the car body, and when they wear out the shock
starts to bump against the metal.  This is the first thing to check when you
hear a noise when you drive over a bump.  If yours are squished out of shape
or are missing, replace them, but only replace them with factory shock
bushings.  Aftermarket shock bushings are too hard and cause the metal
mounting point to flex and eventually fail ($$$).  The factory parts are cheap
enough.

The next part to check is the upper ball joint.  This requires two people. 
Place
a jack under the lower spring pan, and jack up the car just until the wheel is
about an inch or two off the ground.  Grab the top and bottom of the tire and
lift
up, trying to rock the whole wheel up and down.  At the same time, also try to
move the top of the tire in and out, as though you were trying to rotate the
tire
up and lay it on top of the engine.  While one person does this, the other
person should be looking at the upper ball joint with a flashlight, trying to
identify any movement.  There shouldn't be any.  If there is movement, replace
both of the upper ball joints.  Bad ball joints will cause the inside edges of
your
tires to wear faster than the outside edges.

Since you're checking things, take a few moments to have a look at your tie
rod ends.  This is the part where the steering rack hooks up to the front wheel.
With a partner turning the steering wheel back and forth, look for play or
looseness in the two tie rod ends.  If there is any, replace them too.

These front suspension checks work on all Jags.


BONUS TECH BIT:

We've added a link on our website to a couple of software packages that speed
up your dial-up internet access.  We don't have any connection to either of
these companies, but we use their products and they work! (And they're
cheap).  Windows 95/98 is optimized for internet access via a full time hard-
wire connection.  This means that dial-up users are stuck with unoptimized
connections.  These software packages modify your Windows settings to
better manage a dial-up internet connection.  The second package (Netsonic)
further speeds things up by pre-fetching web links and archiving frequently-
accessed web sites for immediate retrieval.  Nice stuff!  Get it!

     Heater core problems have started to sprout up again with the
     cooler weather.  When a heater core fails, the typical symptoms
     are small patches of fog (that don't evaporate easily) on the
     windshield just above the defroster vents, and a sweet smell in
     the air.  The sweet smell is the antifreeze escaping through
     pinhole leaks in the heater core.  Left alone, the heater core
     will continue to corrode and will eventually pour antifreeze on
     your feet and carpets and start to rust out your heater box
     ($$$$$$).  Fix it soon.  There are aftermarket heater cores
     available that are every bit as good as the factory cores, but
     at a much lower price.
