Yes, they could fail independantly. Which actually makes trouble
shooting the problem easier if both have failed. You look for
something common to both, most likely suspect would be the cable. If
the cable needs replacement it's a good idea to replace the housing as
well as the cable. Often it's a damaged housing that causes the cable
to twist off. They aren't that expensive, I'd get if from a Guzzi
dealer. If you haven't one at hand Moto International, MPH, Any of
the well know key dealers would be able to ship one out. I get all my
guzzi parts mail order from dealers since my nearest dealer is several
hundred miles away.
Just be careful on the lower end of the cable where it goes into the
tranny. I'll have to check guzziology when I get home but I think
there is a component there that can get lost, although I didn't know
about it until after I replaced my cable. (grin) By removing the
bottom end of the cable you can tell easier if the cable is the problem.
