John,
I suspect the alternator mainly because of what the gages were doing. I
had initially assumed the her taking awhile to go from the "D" side to
the "C" side was just because she took awhile to warm up, after all it
is winter, but it finally got to the point where it didn't switch over
at all, when I parked and shut her off she wouldn't restart. A friend
gave me a jump to get me home. We used Eric's Cherokee to jump her and
managed to get her started one more time after that, now that doesn't
even get it to turn over. I don't know what impact the temperature is
having, either. It's been somewhere between five above and ten below
(sometimes colder) every night for the last three weeks. Even if the
battery was fine before, it may not be now.
I'd love to get some photos put up for you to take a look at, but I
don't get an "Add Album" icon when I go to the Photos section of the
board. Is it locked out? It'll be Friday or Saturday before I can get
good shots of the engine taken, it's almost dark by the time I get home
right now.
I'll check out binderplanet.com this evening. I haven't been able to
find anyone local who knows about Scouts specifically, most of the
off-roading around here is done with CJs and Wranglers, and the guys
seem to focus on getting me to sell the Scout and buy a Jeep. Yeah,
right, like that's gonna happen.
Thanks again,
Heather

Heather,
You really won't need any special tools or gadgets to take apart
an IH engine or any other part on a Scout. A vast majority of a Scout
can be disassembled using a basic socket set & wrenches. You may need
a few special tools if you decide to take the entire engine apart. I
have pretty much removed and re-attached everything on my Scouts at
least once.
What problem are you having with the alternator? You should be able
to take it to your local auto parts store to get tested or even get a
new one for about $50.
As for the auto choke, there should be some assembly on the side of
the carb if it has an auto or electric choke. A picture or two would
definitely help to identify it.
Have you been to binderplanet.com yet to search forums?
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
