Heather,
You really won't need any special tools or gadgets to take apart
an IH engine or any other part on a Scout. A vast majority of a Scout
can be disassembled using a basic socket set & wrenches. You may need
a few special tools if you decide to take the entire engine apart. I
have pretty much removed and re-attached everything on my Scouts at
least once.
What problem are you having with the alternator? You should be able
to take it to your local auto parts store to get tested or even get a
new one for about $50.
As for the auto choke, there should be some assembly on the side of
the carb if it has an auto or electric choke. A picture or two would
definitely help to identify it.
Have you been to binderplanet.com yet to search forums?
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
