John,
Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure yet just what I need. With the
top on, she's too tall to fit in the garage, and I live in Michigan,
where we've still got 14" of snow on the ground, so I've probably got
4~6 weeks before I can really start working on her. I have the
suspicion that the alternator may be the least of my problems. For
example, the manual choke is still installed in the dash, but not
connected to anything in the engine, the cable's just flopping around, I
can't tell if an automatic choke was installed or not. I'm 90% sure she
needs plugs, and probably wires. I don't even think the guy I bought
her from ever even bothered to change the oil. To be perfectly honest,
I've never tackled an engine before, I only know enough to have a
general idea of what the problem is when she starts acting up, and to be
able to tell when a mechanic is giving me a line of BS. I want to be
able to go through her fitting by fitting and seal by seal, and it
sounds like the service manual is just the ticket for that. She's still
got her original IH 304. Any recommendations on tools or gadgets I
might need? I had to replace a mirror on my other car, and found I
couldn't use my Allens, I had to get Torx wrenches, I'd like to avoid
getting her halfway apart and finding out I need to order a goofy shaped
socket.
Thanks for the help,
Heather

Heather,
They are getting harder to come by. I would recommend checking out
binderbooks.com or
www.superscoutspecialists.com/store/p-80-ih-service-manuals-scout-scout-
ii-pickup-travelall.aspx
to purchase the Service Manual that pertains to your vehicle. In my
opinion the IH service manuals are more informative than the Chilton
manuals. Is there a particular section you need? I may be able to
scan & email you a copy of mine.
