Enviromental Impact of Getting a New Car - Was: Cash for Clunkers pr   Message List

Making and disposing of a car causes far more pollution
than keeping the old one going.

Especially the hybrids and exotics which are extraordinarily
high energy and pollution cost to make and dispose of.

They are also don't last even half as long as a normal car,
and don't get hardly the 'mileage' they are promoted to have.

Hybrid vehicles' overall energy costs exceed those of comparable non-hybrids

July 19, 2006

Ford Motor Company did itself a huge favor recently by backing away from its
pledge to bump-up its hybrid production ten-fold in four years. But, as it turns
out, the company might have done the planet a whale of a favor too.

Just last fall, CEO Bill Ford was valiantly promising in a mega-million dollar
ad campaign that the company would never, ever turn away from its hybrid pledge
because these vehicles were central to the company's reputation as an "innovator
and environmental steward."

Never mind that at the time Ford was losing $2,000 to $3,000 for every hybrid it
sold because consumers won't pay the entire $6,000 extra that it costs to
produce a hybrid over its gas-powered counterpart. Never mind also that in the
real world — outside of the Environmental Protection Agency's tax-payer funded
testing sites — hybrids don't deliver anywhere close to the gas mileage that
the agency attributes to them, as auto-writer Richard Burr reported in the
Weekly Standard.

I have a 1993 J30 with 132k miles, I had gotten my Infiniti after bein'
flooded outta my house at 4AM on the mornin' of August 27, 2008 when the
remnants of Hurricane Faye Dumped MAJOR rain in this area and caused the
local creek to overflow it's banks thereby flooding my house and My 1992
Camry-XLE 3.0 Litre V-6 with 144k miles. I did Love my Camry very much and I
really like this J-30 as well thus far. I am not sure about you folks but
bein' that I am on a very fixed income I couldn't financially afford to
replace my J-30 with One of them Hybrids or some other crazy, over-priced
new car. My J-30 is paid for and I have the title in my hot little hands.
So..I will not be makin' a silly mistake of don' that "Cash for Clunkers"
program. Besides My J-30 Still looks and runs great why would I do something
like that? Besides none of the newer cars have the class and features that
the J-30 did on standard list of amenities.

I think everyone knows about the Cash for Clunkers program by now. I just
wanted to see as how many proud Inifiniti owners are thinking to make use of
this program. I own 1996 J30. I recently spend about 1000 bucks replacing
VSS sensor and speedometer and still like my ride. I wanted to share
thoughts from other Infiniti owners.

Other than making Financial sense I'm also thinking does it really help
reduce emission with old Gas Guzzlers.I'm confused at this point atleast
after spending 1000 bucks recently.

Thanks in advance.
