Hi Deepak,

Guess you are right that its a bit early, but lately been having this problem of
the gears getting hard to engage, especially after driving in stop and go heavy
traffic. The problem occurs mostly while downshifting, especially from 2nd to
1st. So took it to a service centre here who has identified the problem as a
spoilt clutch.

After going through several posts now (been trying to find out clutch assembly
replacement costs) have to admit that i have this problem of riding clutch in
heavy traffic; especially on top of jam packed flyovers (there's one right
outside my apartment in Marthahalli, Bangalore).
Also i do a lot of engine braking, and use rev match to downshift to
deaccelerate from high speeds. So it could also be a result of the 'spirited'
driving!

And yeah, do end up doing a lot of choc a bloc traffic driving almost everyday!

regards,

raj

Clutch plate replacement at 48K kms, isnt that a bit early? Do you drive in
choc-a-block traffic, wherein most of the time you ride half clutch & revv hard?
Pl let us know the reason for this early replacement.

Hi Auster,

If the problem seems to be lessening after use of system D, it could also be
because of carbon deposit and a clogged catalytic converter. Sometimes just an
alteration in the driving style can resolve this issue.
The turbo engine's sweet spot is 2000RPM and driving the car around it ensures
that engine exhaust is also cleared effectively. To maintain the sweet spot one
might need to change gears more often, but it does make a difference.
Also once in a while do rev the car hard (while you are parked at home, but
never on a cold engine) till you see thick black smoke lessening.

Sometimes a worn out clutch plate also creates a problem in initial pick up; a
problem i just discovered today. But if that is the case, your gears also will
become hard to slot. Am giving in my car for a change of clutch plates tomorrow
which has been estimated as a one and a half days job and around 7k as expenses.

cheers

raj

not be able to create required pressure. The whole unit was to be serviced and

At near 2000 rpm, under heavy acceleration / inclines/other conditions when the
engine is loaded, there is a distinct vibration coming from the hood ( not the
regular engine noise - a sort of turbulence) , and the turbo effect is not as
pronounced as it was earlier. Now the car has trouble going above 80kmph - which
otherwise would have been the part where the turbo would only be starting with
its magic.

I think the wiper change is outrageous.
I believe a set of syndicate wipers (that's what's OEM) are available for 220
rs.Bosch wipers which are supposedly better cost 300 MRP, and i got them for 270
+ free install at a bosch dealer's . They seem to have charged you 311/- And 54
Rs + labour for installing them? what did you get ? syndicate or bosch?

Unless their actual quality of work is good ( very rare), I'd suggest you stay
far off this particular TASC.

Auster

Hi Anantha,

>Impressed by the way you Maintain the FE & Maintenance records in detail.

Thank you for your compliments. This spreadsheet is the courtesy of this very
TIUG. Senior members like Manoj T V & Gopi has put in the initial efforts (I big
thanks to them), I simply added my tid-bits.

> Guess you have accounting background and above average patience.

Would like to correct here, I am purely from engineering background (8 years in
Engg, 3 in Diploma, 3 in Degree & 2 in PG Diploma). If you talk @ patience in
servicing the car & updating the log, then I must agree with you. I do it as a
ritual.

> i too have a an indica DLG(bought as a second hand). The vehicle is still under
extended warranty.
But everytime i go to TASC, my occasional service service bill is twice the
charge you mentioned for 60k service.

This is very sad indeed. The charges should not be that high.

>For eg. Last week i went for a oil change at 35,500 Kms, the first owner did
his oil service at 26000kms & a wiper change . The total bill came was 4,550 rs.
They did flusing & added some additives. they charged some 580 for Labour (oil
change) , labor charge 85 for wiper change & 55 for air filter change. They
added 250 for washing & vaccumming.

A standard oil change service costs Rs 450/- only. This is the standard rate at
all TASCs across various cities & this includes labour charges for oil change,
oil filter replacement, fuel filter replacement (2 nos), air filter cleaning,
checking levels of other fluids, minor adjustments of clutch, brake, accelerator
etc, checking mounting bolts, car washing & cleaning etc etc etc (There are lot
more activities, cannot list all over here). Apart from this any minor
adjustments that you would point out should also get covered under Rs 450/-. The
TASC should not have charged you a single paisa for oil, wiper & air filter
change.

>I feel like cheated when i see your excel sheet.

Your TASC is grossly cheating you, no doubt @ that.

>Help me in this regard

Ban this TASC without a single thought, but not before compaining @ it to Tata
Motors. Get hold of a smaller TASC, who will allow you to attend your car while
it is being serviced. Try to question each & every activity (though politely)
that the mechanic is doing on your car. Wont you ask your doctor what is the
particular medicine for? Be as involved as the mechanic. Check the MRP of the
parts that are being replaced. When you get the invoice look at it with a
magnifying glass. See to it that no extra item has been added that you didnt ask
for in the first place. This way you would not only ensure proper servicing of
your car, but it would be easy on your pocket as well. Wish the TASCs worked
with even a fraction of the itegrity & honesty that the chairman of TM does.

Hi Dr.Raj,

I forgot the model matter. Anyway we'll consider the cheapest model as the
price quoted. Here this one dealer deals with 4 brands including
brigdestone. Found his name under michelin website which has given me some
additional confidence. Searched net yst & found some gud feedback abt
Yokohama with Indica's. Our car will be 5 on 10Feb10. Thought of doing it at
that time but the level of braking makes me prepone it. Thanks for ur effort
& mostly i'll be going for Yokohama & if not Michelin will be the final one.
But decided to go for Tubeless on stock steel rims.

Hi Krish,

>Sunday we have seen a used Indica DLX 2003/Sep model and ran 54000 KM.
It is from individual, single owner, seems like serviced for every 5000
KM

Overall the condition of the car seems to be good. If you are directly dealing
with the owner (no middlemen/agents involved), then it would be good.

>The quoted price is RS 180000.

This seems to be a fair quote, given the accessories you are getting. However
you can settle in the range of 1.6K to 1.7K. You can start from 1.5K. To defend
yourself you can say that you will have to put a new set of tyres, overhaul the
suspension, brakes, steering, put new seat covers etc. Just show him that you
will have to pay 25K to 30K to get the car in good shape. If he dosent agree (to
budge below 1.8K, then give him the option of putting a new pair of tyres & seat
covers before he hands it over to you.

>1. What are the things probably I need to worry when the car has
already run 54000 KM and no major services has been taken place?

Majorly you will have to take care of suspension. Rest depends on the condition
of the various systems.

>2. What are the parts MAY/LIKELY to be replaced during the service? Any
idea about approximate service cost for spare parts & labour charges

For this you can refer the various logs in the files section of the group.

Hi James,

That is a quick test for back pressure.

> Clutch is the most reliable part in Indica which will last more
> than a lakh kms.

Here I totally agree with you. It is a maligned item in Indica and its cousins.

When I had a hard clutch, the TASC immediately asked me to do a clutch ovehaul.
When it was refused feigning need for car, they adjusted the cable and it was
okay for a couple of months. But the problem recurred and it was taken to a
garage where they do Indica service.

Even they advised an overhaul citing labour charges etc. I talked to them and
told me I am okay with labour charges and would change only whatever needs
change. The fork only needed change, not even the clutch cable was changed. Now
the clutch is smooth and quite soft.

I may not have had the same chance in a TASC as I would not be able to monitor
the work.

But other than this incident, I don't have much problem with my TASC.

Hi Deepak and Anantha,

Please take a look at the following before completely crucifying the service
centre:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/indica-users/message/27633

Moreover, where I service my Marina (it is a TASC, but does not sell TATA cars),
the charges are split for services and oil change. Moreover alignment is charged
extra, so is wiper changing, washing etc.

You can see the split charges here:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/indica-users/message/31736

I do agree that service stations try to include non critical thing which add to
their revenue. It is for customers to be aware and accept what is needed.

Forums like these are one of the important methods to disseminate awareness of
such things. But at the same time we should be fair in our judgement.

This doesn't seem to be a good sign of the car's health, and definitely not
after following the practise of servicing the car every 5,000kms. White smoke
being emitted indicates an unhealthy engine. Lots of black smoke can mean either
a clogged air filter, or that the Fuel Injection Pump needs calibration. Experts
comments awaited.

This is common on non-CRDI models, but definitely not a concern. You can get the
FICD checked.

I'm almost certain you meant seat covers.

       Hi All,

As I mentioned, I am looking for used Indica Diesel car in Bangalore.

Sunday we have seen a used Indica DLX 2003/Sep model and ran 54000 KM. It is
from individual, single owner, seems like serviced for every 5000 KM.

I am totally newbie, studying more info in indica user gorups documents section.
Thanks a lot for sharing documents.

I took my friend who has ideas on diesel engines. I haven't taken any
professional mechanics along with me.

The quoted price is RS 180000.

Here are our inspection summary:

1. Oil didn't spill out when opened the notch of oil level key stick when the
car is on

2. When we start the car, so much of black color smoke emitted from backside
(for 20 seconds) and it turns to be white color smoke for another 15 seconds
then nothing like major observable smoke. We accelerate the car to test the
smoke level.

3. When we turn on AC, the car immediately lost its energy, then moved very
slowly. I heard that all Indica pre-turbo model suffer when AC is On.

4. Front two tires are new. Back tyres can run for another 10000 KM.

5. We need to replace the car seats. We cannot use them.

6. When we start the car, we can hear so much of noise, which my friend told me
that all diesel vehicles are like that. When we move the car on first & second
gear, the noise is slowly reduced and in third gear, we can't hear the much
noise.

7. Pioneer mp3 player

8. The car is on his employer name, needs to be transfered to my name

9. As per owner, he serviced his car for every 5000 KM

10. Battery replaced 2 years back

11. Suspension seems to be problem in front as well as backside. We can feel the
hit when car passes on speed breaker

11. The owner has not done any work on suspension, breaks, clutch, alternator.

12. Power window works, central lock works

I know we could have missed many things in the above inspection since we are not
aware much of car. If the deal is OK, I will take good mechanic along with me.

I have seen indica-users( here) service history, looks like we need to replace
the suspension. not sure about clutch and alternator and other stuffs.

I am very much afraid Total Cost of Ownership if I buy the car for 1.8 Lacs and
service them. If the service cost around 30K to 40K in total, the cost of the
car will be 2.2 lacs which I feel more for 2003 DLX.

Questions:

1. What are the things probably I need to worry when the car has already run
54000 KM and no major services has been taken place?

2. What are the parts MAY/LIKELY to be replaced during the service? Any idea
about approximate service cost for spare parts & labour charges

If not price, please help me on service things I need to take care and other
missing things I need to verify before start negotiating him.

Thank you so much.

Regards,

Krish

Hi Krish,

I'm not an expert here to answer, but just thought of replying u...

1. Oil won't spill in any case is what I believe. Better open the air filter
& check for oil marks in the filter element.
2. Black smoke is normal, but white is not good I guess.
3. Indica's AC is a bigger one compared all the other AC's in the same
segment but still u shd feel its effect on pick-up only when the AC is kept
at full speed position.
4. Tyres life is 4 to 5 years. I'm sure very soon u'll need rear tyre
replacement too since its life is over due.
5. Why u need seat replacement, do u mean the covers...if so it'll cost u
only 2-3k for the basic model.
6. Is the noise similar to tractor noise, its due to the fuel pump
timing....which is the solution but for our car we couldn't do anything to
it till date even after timing adjustment, if the noise is bearable you can
live with it.
7. Music system is considered zero value during a car sale normally.
8. Employer name...shd be treated as a negative point since during resale
ppl point is as a company owned car which would've been over used but at
times u get gud cars since maintenance may be good.
9. No comments.
10. Check the battery number(First 2 numbers are the week number, next
alphabet is the month of manufacture with 'A' representing April, 'B'
representing May, next 2 digits the year(Am I mixed up with anything))
11. Suspension, Brakes, Clutch, Alternator don't need any servicing within
54k kms. Suspension may need a work depending upon the condition but a
vehicle run 54k kms will have less work only like bush kit change, etc.
Brake pads(front) may need a change costing u arnd 500Rs. Clutch is the most
reliable part in Indica which will last more than a lakh kms. Alternator
regulator fails in Indica which will again cost u less than a 1000Rs.
12. Good to know that.

In all aspects compare the price in Internet & decide. And don't ever take
ur car for service to an authorised service centre & if they come to know
that u r the second owner, u'll hear lot of feary yes feary tales from them
& reflection in ur bill. All the best...

The total bill came was 4,550
rs. They did flusing & added some additives. they charged some 580 for Labour
(oil change) , labor charge 85 for wiper change & 55 for air filter change.
They added 250 for washing & vaccumming.

Hi,

>Have noticed a remarkable increase in pick-up

One more thing I have noticed is the gear movement becoming butter smooth. Dont
know if this can be attributed to EP90 oil used instead of the regular EP80,
which is recommended in the manual. The silencer noise has vanished completely,
thanks to the new Silencer Packing. Pl have a look (refer link below) at the
silencer packing that was replaced. The dark one is the old, worn out piece &
the white one is the new.

No issues at all. I follow one practice when I give my vehicle for servicing. Be
present all the while, keep questioning the mechanic, take snaps (on my cell
phone) of the critical parts. This helps a lot. Try & see if you can follow the
suit.

The only car that I know with this aize as OEM is Palio. Since the movement of
this car is less, I don't know whether you would get any 'good' deal!

For starters, I found that size in JK Amazer XL series and MRF ZVTS series.
Could not find that size in Gooyear though.

Hi Deepak,

Since not being an automobile enthusiast, I personally did not inspect the
vehicle underbody either before or after the repair and had only wanted a Road
Test to satisfy myself that vehicle has been put together properly and would
perform as it did before being opening up. I did see the photo of the rusted
part in the PC that they had at Autolink. To my untrained eyes it appeared to be
in the underbody sheet.

When I asked once what was longe they mentioned that it was an english term
"Logitudinal ...". I am not sure if it was "Longitudinal Element" or some thing
else. Some one who knows automobile parts better would be able clarify.

Sorry, I am not able to give you a better explanation.

Hi All,

Yesterday evening I got back my vehicle after the underbody repairs.

M/s Autolink did all the negotiations with Tata Motors and the anti-rust
treatment agency for the repair of the vehicle under the 5 year warranty for
rust protection.

We left the vehicle with Autolink on 28th Oct, and they got the necessary
authorization for repairs under warranty on 31st. They opened up the vehicle on
3rd and started the repairs from 4th.

The major repair was the replacement of what they call "longe"(?) on the left
side. The cost for this repair, I did not have to pay. I had agreed to pay for
any damaged and worn out parts that they would find when they opened up the car.
This costed me about Rs 3,900/=.

The anti rust treatment has been done on the replaced "longe".

I have been advised to bring the vehicle to workshop after it has run about 1000
kms so that they can check and tighten any loose bolt/nut etc.

Regards,
Pandiaraj

chassis. The treatment then costed me Rs 1650/-, and the current cost shown in
the web is Rs 2530/-.

a second look at it and has confirmed that the chassis indeed has rusted.

going to proceed. Mean while the bent rod etc will be fixed and the vehicle will
be returned to us. When the agency the does "Dinitrol" treatment is ready to pay
for the repair costs we will have to leave the vehicle at Autolinks for repairs
which is estimated to cost about Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000.
