*** ITINERARY/DETAILS UPDATE ***

Changes to the CURRENT ITINERARY (posted in early March) are taking place.

In the NEXT UPDATE (a month or so from now), I will post a REVISED ITINERARY
which will incorporate the links and list of places to visit I have noted in the
last update and below in this update. I also hope to have a few more details
ironed out/in process.

In the meantime, more notes....

1 ... Even if you are just THINKING about joining us for any part of this,
PLEASE ADVISE ME...NOW! I am hoping to secure more sponsors and, perhaps, some
blocks of rooms and restaurant reservations along the way.

2 ... I've continued to contact Route 66 businesses and associations to discuss
possibilities/details and have received welcoming replies thus far. I look
forward to more feedback and plans being made as I continue to make contacts in
the next month or so....

3 ... To continue the list of visits to places, etc., that I started in the last
update, "highlights" for additional contacts I've made thus far since that last
update include:

September 5, stop in Springfield IL; COZY DOG will NOT be open that evening. I
am currently attempting to find a new location to meet, perhaps Homestyle
Cafe....

I posted back in March about a possible surgery to repair an incisional hernia
(above my belly button) that developed from my 2003 open heart surgery and made
itself known in September 2008 at the NMCOA Mini Meet in Stillman Valley IL and
then even more so in mid-February 2009. In March, I had decided to NOT get it
repaired, since it was, according to the surgeon, small. However ... as some of
you know ... that hernia had started to act up a bit more regularly the last few
months (once, while I was visiting friends in Freeport IL in April) ... and with
"car" and "road trip" season here, I decided enough was enough.

So, Thursday, May 28, 2009, the incisional hernia was repaired. I wasn't able
to drive until the following Monday, which meant I missed out on a GORGEOUS
weekend of driving my older 4 Monte Carlos. The following weekend (first
weekend of June) was rainy, of course, so didn't get them out for the first time
that weekend either.... Ah, well ... plenty of time left in the year...right?

My 6-month cardiology checkup 2 weeks later (Thursday, June 11) went well.
Everything looks good; though, the pacemaker lifespan is now at ~5 years. The
appointments were quick with the pacemaker clinic and my cardiologist, and I was
back home by about 3:30p, after leaving home about 9:30a. BUT, my next
appointment won't be so quick. Tuesday, December 15, I will have a stress echo
(ugh), along with the pacemaker check and visit with my cardiologist....

Until then ... lots to do in the next few months!

*grins*

You KNOW I'll be there!!!! That is, with or without Monte Carlo(s). My __cell
ph#__ is in my signature, if you want to contact me during the event....

I know of a couple people in IL and the STL area that will not be there ... for
whatever reason. I don't know ... I just find that sad, I guess. *shrugs*

Those photos are always a blast. I remember we did one in the rain, with JMD
there. That was the year he hoisted my sister onto his shoulders so she could
get some better pics. We put the cars in a V-formation in a parking lot near
the hotel, as I recall ... and it DOWNPOURED while we took pics... he he. Then,
in 2003, I SLEPT through the group picture ... that was the year I had the open
heart surgery in January..... Ah, memories!

BTW ... a little ironic ... that same weekend (June 26-28), an hour north of
where we will be, the 6th Annual Cruisin' Route 66 Classic Car Festival in
Litchfield IL will feature, among other things, NASCAR displaying 2 NASCARS,
including Dale Earnhardt Sr's 1988 GM Goodwrench Monte Carlo.....

Hey Ed,

Wisconsin taxes are bad enough, that hasn't scared me away but the tolls sure are a PITA :).  My friend planning our tourney just figured out the date this past week....but I intend to be at the NMCOA in June so hopefully I see alot of you guys there at least. Glad to hear about your new home and that the Monte is still in the plans too.

I think you are just scared of all the Illinois taxes, tolls, etc :) Kidding of course. Sorry to hear you can't make it, there's always next year! Or, if Cort can find a way to sabotage your tournament. :)

Hey Paul,

I wondered if you would have the baseball tournament again this year. I was
hoping you wouldn't, but I completely understand! I miss a few things on
Tuesday Friday nights ... because I enjoy watching my bro-in-law's and Dad's
softball teams play!

I'd say I hope things change, but that sounds bad ... he he.

I again will have to miss this years event as our annual baseball tournament (only the 2nd year) is planned for the same weekend again, just like last year :(  I really was planning to go to this, but the baseball games will be pretty much all day Saturday and also into Sunday.  If anything changes or our tournament falls through I will let you know.

**UPDATE**

My MAJOR 2009 road trip is ~4 MONTHS away!

REMEMBER ... I need to know if you are even thinking of joining us, so I can
plan accordingly. Please post here...

...or Email me:
faithcubsmc2691
@
aol.com

...or call:
my __CELL PH#__ is in my signature below....

KUDOS...TO NEW SPONSORS!

... BECKY'S BARN (IL) will sponsor a giveaway. Details later. Check out her
website:
http://www.beckysbarn.com/

... the NATIONAL MONTE CARLO OWNERS ASSOCIATION, whose MC Nationals will be in
Collinsville IL (STL area), June 26-28, 2009. Participating dues-paying NMCOA
members will receive a gift certificate or gift card. The NMOCA pledges up to
$150!

ITINERARY/DETAILS...IN THE "IRONING OUT" STAGE!

... The CURRENT ITINERARY is the one posted (above) in early March. However,
given the "fine tuning" of details, changes WILL be made. I'll post a "final"
itinerary closer to September, but for those thinking/planning to join OR meet
us somewhere along the way, it will not be far from what it is now.... Course,
I expect the "spontaneous experiences" along the road will alter the itinerary
as we drive....

... I've started contacting Route 66 businesses and Associations to discuss
possibilities/details and have received wonderful responses. I look forward to
further replies and information. "Highlights" and websites related to these
conversations include:

http://www.ratfinkgarage.com/

http://www.henrysroute66.com/

http://www.il66authority.com/

http://www.missouri66.org/

http://www.meteorcrater.com/index.php

Lodging/meal options along the way (details later)

Visits to places already on the itinerary, including...
...Lincoln Highway HQ/Lincolnway Cafe (IL)
...Becky's Barn (IL)
...Henry's Ra66it Ranch (IL)
...Cafe on the Route (KS)
...Afton Station (OK)
...POPS (OK)
...Phillips 66 Station (TX)
...Wigwam Motel, overnight stay (AZ)

Visits to places to be put on the itinerary, including...
...the Blue Swallow Motel, Tucumcari NM
http://blueswallowmotel.com/

...and a tour of the California Route 66 Museum (Victorville), right before the
ending dinner (which will push the dinner back to about 5:30p or 6p, instead of
starting at the current itinerary time of 4:30p)....
http://www.califrt66museum.org/

So...will YOU join or meet up with us somewhere along the Route?

To me, the ironic part of this sidebar from our local paper is that I've driven
the intersections MANY times ... and never once felt unsafe at them. Maybe
because I'm used to them ... and I know how drivers are in those areas, so I am
extra cautious....?

*shrugs*

STILL ... it would be very nice if they were corrected....

Main article about dangerous intersections in the area:

Anyone else encounter these type of intersections regularly?

About 8 years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of watching someone sit on the
fender of my '81 MC SC ... uninvited ... at a local S Elgin cruise night. I
slowly made my way back to my car ... and just stood there ... watching him ...
wondering how long he was planning to plant his rear end on my car's fender. I
didn't wait too long; his buddy suddenly noticed that I was staring at them ...
and motioned for him to move. He looked back at me, shrugged and walked away.
I didn't say a word, though when I saw him leave in a spotless older (late 1960s
early 1970s as I recall) Dodge, I wish I had. You really think I'd have
survived unscathed had I sat on HIS car?

Now, sure ... my '81 MC SC (like all of my Monte Carlos) is FAR from perfect ...
so a new scratch on an already-scratched fender is NOT a big deal. And, given
the shape of the paint on it and my other MCs, I suppose I shouldn't be all that
concerned...or complain too much. However, it is the principle. Too many
times, people disrespect other peoples' property ... without a thought.

Something similar happened just this past late April. I walked out of work one
afternoon, to find a car parked next to mine with a flat tire. As I walked up
to my 87 MC LS/CL, I calmly took note that the people changing the tire were
very close to my car. Then, as I walked past the front to the driver's door, I
noticed a guy put his wallet on the hood of my car ... gliding it over the hood
as he reached into it. I opened the door ... watching him as he left the wallet
on the hood of my car. The girl with him happened to notice my stare ... and
motioned for him to remove his wallet. He did ... and actually apologized,
saying, "Oh, sorry, sir." I just nodded...and then shook my head as I got into
my car.

Then, the first Monday in May, I came out of my doctor's office ... to find a
center cap on my '87 MC LS/CL's honeycomb/checkerboard wheels missing. All 4
were on the car when I went in for my appointment, but only 3 were left when I
got back to the car. The one missing ... driver's side front....

Maybe it's just me ... but I treat everyone else's car, whether I like it or
not, as if it were my own. I don't lean on them, I don't sit on them, I don't
even TOUCH them ... unless told it is OK. Why others don't have a similar
mentality ... especially car enthusiasts ... I do not understand. In some ways,
I don't even understand non-car enthusiasts not understanding this concept....

*sighs*

Anyone else have similar experiences?

We've seen witty/interesting license plates, such as these in IL:

BMW AT 40, Pontiac Grand Am
TUTH D K, Honda Civic coupe

...BUT ... have you noticed any plate ... ODDITIES?

One morning on the way to work, I happened to glance in my rear-view mirror ...
and thought I saw the word "S E X" on a license plate. As I waited to turn left
off Route 58 onto Barrington Rd, the vehicle went past ... and I looked at the

LOL! Very true ... I hadn't thought of that...entering the Charger!

Although, if things work out the way I'm afraid they will, I may be in Decatur
THIS coming Saturday to pickup/buy a car at the local Chevy dealership ...
sadly, NOT a Charger.....but something for winter and road trip usage.....
Either that, or I may be in Peoria to buy a Caprice for winter usage ... in
which case, I'll still need that Charger rental ;). We'll see.......

As for this gathering, as I mentioned to you Mike on the MI group, with
everything going on this year, not sure I'll be able to make it. But, ya never
know. Would be good to see you again.

It is the Quality Inn & Suites Conference Center in Bellville, OH. (419)
866-7000. This hotels rates are $98.96 a night (you must say you are with the
Monte Carlo group to get that rate). This hotel has a limited number of rooms
but there is a hotel right across the street called the Comfort Inn South (419)
8864000. You can stay there for $116.99 a night (must say you are with the
Monte Carlo group to get that rate). This hotel has an indoor water park! You
can get in free to the water park when you stay there. Both hotels are on the
internet so check them out for all they have to offer.

Eight (8) gathered Saturday, April 4, 2009, for a wonderful afternoon at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. Too bad more members didn't join us; I still had to pay for 10 people. Cost was only $6 per person, versus the regular charge of $19 per person.

MY favorite part is the Legoland city (Chicago) in the beginning room. Kinda wish we could've spent more time in that area. The detail is just ... tremendous. One could conceivably spend a few hours looking at that display ... and still not catch all of the details.

I took ~30 pics, 10 of which I'm posting here (start with the second post)...

Since I have received a few comments about my observation of "The Hill" area
(not being comfortable about parking my '87 MC LS/CL there) ... namely that it
is one of the better areas of STL ... thought I'd better clarify, even though
that observation was one small sentence in the entire post! My observation is
NOT based on ME feeling or not feeling safe in the area, nor was it based on a
feeling that it was a high crime area. My observation IS based on the narrow
streets with parking on both sides. Heck, my rental car almost was sideswiped
by others at least three times shortly after I parked it, and some cars were
FLYING through that area. I can only imagine how I would've felt if that was my
'87 MC LS/CL almost getting sideswiped.... Sorry, that is just not a
comfortable feeling for me ... in ANY area.

>
> Friday the 13th, I went to work for a few hours, came home, picked up the
rental (a Dodge Charger, of course), finished packing and left town about 2:10p.
I made a beeline for St Louis (via RT 64 W, I-39 S, I-55 S and I-64 W), hoping
to arrive for the ValveReplacement Reunion Friday night dinner. I stopped once,
at a Shell station in Raymond IL just off I-55. I noticed a "Route 66"
historical marker ... so, I suspect I was on Route 66 a bit. Unfortunately, I
didn't have time to explore that area ... or any other Route 66 area, for that
matter. I arrived in "The Hill" area of St Louis around 7:20p ... just in time
for dinner ... and I only saw one police car the entire trip down. I'm glad I
rented ... I wouldn't have felt comfortable parking my '87 MC LS/CL in "The
Hill" area.... Dinner was DELICIOUS ... and the late night gab session was
great ... as they usually are.
>
> Then, Saturday, after breakfast and a bit more chatting, I left St Louis
around 11a. On the way out of the hotel parking lot (Crown Plaza, Clayton MO),
I spotted a silver '87 or '88 MC SS. The trunk was open, but I didn't see
anyone around. So, I headed on to Shelbina MO, where I met Randy (from several
MC clubs/boards). I arrived just before 2p, via I-170 N to I-70 W to RT 61 N to
RT 36 W. Spent about 5 hours there; Randy took me for a spin in his MCSS (first
time he had it out this year!) and showed me around town. Later, he got out his
RC cars ... and we had some fun with those. After dinner, I left for home,
taking RT 36 E to I-72 E to I-55 N to I-39 N to RT 64 E. I left Shelbina ~7p
... and arrived home just before 1a.
>
> I didn't have a lot of time this trip, but I tried to make the most of it. I
know I missed a number of people in the area, but I'll be back 3 more times ...
end of June for the MC Nationals in Collinsville IL ... early September during
the Route 66 Drive ... (and) ... early October for the 3rd annual MC MidWest
Meet. Sure hope to meet others during those road trips!

Hi, I am new to this group and new to owning Monte Carlos'. I just recently
purchased two 1997 Monte Carlos' and one is a Limited Edition equipped with
factory fog lamps. My question is how do you turn them on? I could not find
them listed anywhere in the owners manual or online. Any help would be
appreciated.
Thanks,

is subject to change should road "construction" (term used loosely, of course)
projects necessitate a change in travel plans. The current configuration is ~50
miles and is about 1.5 hours in length.

**** AFTER THE DRIVE ****

If any of you thinking about joining this are wondering how you'll get your

when we are in their area.... I just need to find out and contact stations
along the way....

for meals along the way) will need to be contacted.....
