Hi Matt,

In the UK we have a sort of modern classic sector for insurance purposes
where vehicles are over 15 years old.

We can give a agreed value to the insurance company and they load the
premium over a standard Honda 750 from 1989 and then they seem to discount
the premium because nobody rides the things much these days and the risks
are lower.

Regards,

Lloyd

Some old prints (best way to keep information years ago) come into sight
coincidentally.
Stolen RC45. "Stolen in NJ 4/8/1999 VIN#:JH2RC4501RM000021 ENG #: 2000472"
It was published at http://members. <http://members.aol.com.> aol.com. The
guy says he has no insurance. Hope he got it back long ago already (the RC45
look very nice on those pictures he published).
That makes me start thinking if there is a official "insurance value" for
the RC 30 (European countries) today? In Switzerland classic car or classic
motorcycle must be older than 30 years. How insurance company value RC 30
today is more or less based on a 21 years old used bike. Don't really want
lock my RC30 in Swiss Bank safe till 2018. May be someone in this group can
give a hint. Matt

Original UK brochures from Honda states:-

	 RC30
	 Dry wt. = 185kg

	 RC45
	 Dry wt. = 189kg kerb wt. = 212kg

	 NR750
	 Dry wt. - 223kg

I make no claim as to their accuracy, but I am of the impression Honda
don't lie about stuff like this.

I would also like to correct the mistaken impression that the NR500
never won everything. Freddie Spencer took the NR500 to victory at a
US race (cannot remember the venue). It may have been just a National
race, but he did beat Kenny Roberts though, so no small achievement.
He was also performing reasonably well at the British GP at
Silverstone before it broke down. Not an obvious success, but IMO
Honda should be applauded for attempting to do something no-one else
had the expertise, or balls to even try.

The NR500 engine was complex and time consuming to build. The race
team explained that a Suzuki RG500 engine would make about 120hp if
you spent a whole day on its meticulous assembly and if you slung it
together in a couple of hours, it STILL made 119hp. However, if you
meticulously assembled the NR500 engine, you could also achieve 120hp,
but it took about 3 days. If you 'threw' it together in a day, it
barely made 100hp. This was one of their big problems. Oh, and cranks
cost about £10,000 ea.

Probably RC30 got light weight in Europe.
185 kg (dry) / 208 kg (incl. oil, fuel, battery, tool kit)

By the way,
NC30 - 205 kg with 15 litre fuel
NR750 - 223 kg (dry)

The published weights by the manufacturer are:

RC30 - 180 kg (for any RC30)
RC45 - 190 kg (for your Canadian RC45)

This isn't very tricky math, even for a military guy.

180 kg - 190 kg = -10 kg

You can make up all the numbers you want, they are more fictitious than Honda's.

There was an owner over in Manchester, I have not been in touch with him for
some while now but he got a sheet from a shop / outlet that used to supply the
Aviation Industry, apparently the foam has some flame retardant properties??? It
was a direct match, but have not personally seen it.

As for a template, not a problem, contact me off line with your details and I
will send them over to you

It's hard to improve on the near-perfection that was the RC30, but Honda did it
without the shadow of a doubt... the RC45 is smaller due to the cam gears on the
side and a narrower valve angle... lighter due to one less crank journal and

RC30
Engine weight 174.2lbs
Dry weight 423 lbs
Factory HP 150

RC45
Engine weight 161.8lbs 191hp
Dry Weight 419 lbs
Factory HP 191

Honda made a 12.4lb improvement over the RC30's engine and 4lb pound improvement
over dry weight...

I think the most impressive feat of the NR500 that is very seldom discussed is
the fact that Honda **nearly** managed to build a 4-stroke engine with the same
power to displacement ratio as a 2-stroke engine, which is an absolutely
astounding achievement, especially in the early 'eighties.

Yeah, the '87 race NR750 piloted by Mal Campbell was the only successful NR
racer - more RVF than NR, but a different beast to the '92 road going birthday
present for Sochiro.
Despite the doom & gloom of the NR500, Honda took away over 200 patents & the
FIA rewrote their rule book stipulating that combustion chambers be cylindrical

No - I was in Noosa tanning my arse. I heard about it though. I would have
rather been in Healesville! It sounded like a great day...next year I
suppose. BTW, I finished the RC30 - it's just gorgeous. I rode it on the
weekend and had all sorts of freaks waving and giving me the thumbs up.
Maybe it was because I was naked, but it MAY have been the bike. Not sure.

Yes, you are quite correct on everything. I just put down what Honda said. If it

Yes the NR500 was cool, it just was not a the right tool for the job.

Not sure your details are correct there, I think street NR was 1992, the
RC45 was actually heavier than the RC30 out of the crate and the NR500,
never won anything, crashed and burned on its first corner on its first race
and was dumped by Honda as a GP race bike. Whether this makes it a failure
is debatable, but for a race bike to be a winner (not a failure), it needs
to win. It was way cool though, and easily the most interesting GP for mine
ever made.

I was looking at American Honda's web site to gain some insight into the VFR1200
abortion, and maybe find out where it all went ugly. I could not figure out what
happened with the 1200F but I did learn a lot about the history of their V4
machines.

- The RC30 was released in 1988.
- The NR750 Street bike came out in 1987.
- In 1988 Joey Dunlop rode an RC30 with NACA ducts in the upper cowl.
- The RC45 is lighter, faster and more compact than the RC30.
- The NR500 was not a failure.

I know you were strictly talking about production bikes, but the RCV212.....!
Kinda makes the 45 more like a snail trail! ;)

I don't think there'll be much chance of the dies being modded there for a road
going 1000, but you can ask your pals? Shame most of that stuff ends up in the
skip.... :(

On a really sad note, I seen the first salter this morning... WD40 Sunday is
looming!

OLD GUY RIDING IT.

has no  driven gears cams........IT COULD BE WORSE.YOU COULD BE PAYING EVEN
MORE FOR A BIKE WITH TWO SHITTY RUBBER BELTS DRIVING THE VALVE GEAR.

I know that the Italians and Japanese have a different philosophy, but how great
it would be if Honda were to build a bike similar to Ducati.

The 30,45 and NR750 are great, but the SP, SPS, DD16 go to another level.

I love the 30 and 45, but I wait in hope of another racer for the road, before I
am too old [I collect my OAP next month :-( ]

Dave.
