Re: [Honda RC30 Owner's Club ] Re: Wheels

A funny thing to me, the fact that many 30 owners seem to want the VFR-F 3.5
inch front wheel, which I think was standard on some Euro, (Swiss?) 30`s.
My 1990 RC36 was very broken when i bought it, (Auction, $265 Aus.), top triple
clamp in 3 pieces, fork tubes snapped, everything right of the clutch cover
gasket missing etc.
I straightened the lower triple, replaced the upper, new fork tubes, and an
engine of course.
Because I was in a major Honda dealership, there was a gutter scuffed CBR600RR
`06 or `07 front wheel for nix.
On it I used VFR800 floating discs that look more 30 like. All bolt up stuff,
and same spoke pattern as the rear single sider.

 It is also 3.00 x 17.

With all the new/straightened stuff, it string lined perfectly, much to my
surprise, and having ridden many VFR-F`s in my 20 yrs in the bike spanner game,
I think this bike is massively sharper in its handling than any road going VFR-F
I have ever ridden.
Guess I need to ride a `30 to compare. All I can surmise is that the wider rim
gives a better sized contact patch at greater lean angles and that is why it is
a favoured mod. for you guys.
That being said, with very light glass RC30 bodywork, CBR 250RR
headlight/instrument panel, 4-2-1 left can Two Brothers system etc., I might
have knocked 30 or so kilos off a standard 1990 VFR-F and maybe that is a
contributor.
I am going to try a 65 and possibly a 60 profile front tyre at some stage to
aim at a better contact patch at lean with the narrower rim, not that I crank it
that far very often, or have had a problem with it, but just as an experiment.
Have any of you guys tried a lower profile front tyre on your 3.00" front rim
as an alternative to chasing the wider 3.5" rim? My FZR 750 ran a 17 front and
18 rear and the 120/70 front never touched the road close to the edge of the
tread when the rear would be close to the sidewall, and this bike is similar,
hence my thoughts of a lower profile front.

 Regards, Eddie.

Hi, Dick -

The RC30 wheel will fit but it`s only a 3.00 x 17 rim so what you need is a
(3.50 x 17) NC30 or NC35 wheel, which is also the same as the one fitted to
VFR750FR-FV, CBR400RR NC29 and early `90s CBR600s

Cheers,
Rick
