Actually that’s a fabulously simple analogy. Well done.

Preload Adjusters - Donor Springs Spacer
Not really a response to anyone but .... more windings, either by a
longer spring or a tighter helix makes a spring softer. The HRC
springs have more windings from being longer and also have a tighter
helix. On these particular springs the increased rate comes from the
larger wire diameter. Best way to vision a spring is to imagine it
uncoiled making it a torsion bar similar to the front of my old Chevy
4x4 (or the Dodge Valiant I drove in high school). Springs are just a
very convenient way of packaging a torsion bar.
Some info that might prove both boring to some, useful to others...
HRC Springs
Part No. 51403-NL0-821
37.8 mm OD
17.5 live windings
4.8 mm OD wire
265 mm long +/- (new springs)
Calculated spring rate 0.853 kg/mm (47.8 lb/inch)
Engraved/published spring rate K = 0.85 (They also made 0.80 and 0.90
I think)
Spacer length = 129.6 mm
Air gap = 98 mm
Standard Spring
Part No. 51401-MR7-003
37.8 mm OD
14.5 live windings
4.5 mm OD wire
246 mm long +/- (used springs)
calculated spring rate = 0.774 kg/mm (43.3 lb/inch)
No published spring rate (that I know of?)
Spacer Length = 150 mm
Air Gap = 98 mm
