My buddy has a 2001 and the column shifter has gone limp.

It seems like the "safety slots" between each selection are gone and
the shifter moves up&down easily without pulling it forward, although
it does not move down by it's self.

He has obtained a quote of $700 to replace the column.

Any alternatives to this, fixing it ourselves without replacing the
column?
