What I can't figure is, if you make your own internal gasket, what's to prevent
it from simply breaking up and collapsing into the exhaust? The external gasket
is clamped between the manifold and the muffler; it's forced into the correct
shape and has limited exposure to the exhaust gases.

But the internal gasket has nothing to hold it into a ring shape aside from
relentless blasts of searing hot gas. Whatever you use, it's going to soften and
deform and get carried away into the exhaust stream.

Every internal gasket I've tried (including a real one) has disappeared some
time after installation. I suspect it's simply being disintegrated by the heat
and pressure.
