Re: [honda-insight] Radio options with XM.

I installed a Pioneer DEH-P4400 head unit in my 2000 insight 5(?) years ago with the XM receiver.  Got everything I needed through Crutchfield Electronics.   The radio was a direct fit w/ wire adapting harnesses ~ I believe that the 2001 Civic used the same harness.

I ran all of the wiring for the XM receiver under the door sill / carpet on the passenger side and mounted the receiving unit in the dead space under the back hatch by the spare tire, opposite the foam block for the CD changer.  Ran the antenna wire up and out through the weatherstripping on the hatch.   Not as fancy as some of these other guys, but I didn't have to pull a headliner either.

I upgraded the speakers to Blaupunkt units about 6 months later.  Easy task, just get the rear speaker kit from Honda, the wires are already there.  Comes with the speakers & trim.  Chuck the speakers & put in good units.  I believe you need shallow 6" speakers though.  The door speakers are where you'll have an issue, so pull those before you order anything so you know they fit.

Hope this helps.

JB

Hey, all! I just bought a 2000 Insight, and couldn't be happier. It's
got the standard AM-FM/Cassette radio in it, and that's going to be
good for me for about a week. Then, I'm going to want to upgrade. I've
read all the older accounts about which radios work well in the
Insight, but wanted to ask if anyone's installed a newer radio in an
insight. Specifically, I want an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player (all the Cd
players these days seem to play MP3s, so that's not an issue), but I
also want XM radio. It also seems that some are "XM ready", but that
seems to mean that you have to run a cable to another box, and install
the XM antenna.

Has anyone done this yet? Any radios fit better than others?

Thanks.

Rob
