Two weeks parked in Phoenix in the summer with the windows rolled up did it for
mine at 42K. The heat really accelerates the self discharge so by the time I
started it back up I'm sure the voltage was really low, and after a few miles it
was unable to bring it back up to an acceptable level (hot batteries) and gave
me the IMA light.

And the best part is the owners manual says you can park it for two weeks so
essentially I did nothing wrong.

Rick

Sounds like the IMA battery self-discharge rate is quite high. You

might be able to accelerate the illumination of the IMA light by

parking your Insight for longer than normal (e.g., for twice as long

as normal) so that the IMA battery will self-discharge even more. The

resulting imbalance among individual battery cells might be sufficient

to illuminate the IMA light.

That's very typical. Actually, without a diagnostic trouble code
having been set (i.e., the IMA light illuminating), there is very
little that the dealer can do to diagnose the problem. Yes, this can
be very frustrating when one knows that the IMA system isn't working
correctly. I had to drive about 3 years with a misbehaving IMA system
before the IMA light finally illuminated which provided the dealer
with the information necessary to replace the IMA battery under
warranty. So I'm afraid that you will just need to be patient.

Complaining to the dealers in my area is like complaining to the wall, though I
prefer the wall, it doesn't make as many inane arguments {smile}.

The dealer doesn't care how bad the battery system works, if the IMA light
doesn't go on, then all I am going to get is a $100 charge for an inspection so
they can tell me that there is nothing wrong with the system because the IMA
light doesn't go on (yes, it's very catch-22 ish).

It behaved very strangely this weekend - I drove about 100 miles total with the
battery refusing to move off of 3 bars on the display even though it was
charging all the time while I was driving. It finally moved off of it and then
promptly managed to become nearly full within 15 minutes (I blinked and it was
suddenly at half and a few minutes later it was nearly full).

These days it seems to have the tendency to drop large amounts while not being
driven. It will be at half when I turn it off, then the next time I go to drive
it will be at a third sort of a thing.

I manage to keep my mileage up by just accelerating slower, not being in any
hurry to get to red lights, and making sure I have enough momentum to get up the
"hills" (I live in the very flat part of IL, so it's not very difficult to do)
and just generally avoiding using the brake as much as possible. It really
helps to have the manual vs the CVT.

Don't get me wrong, I love my car and wouldn't trade it for anything. It just
frustrates me not being able to have more control over the IMA system and having
to deal with car dealers just drives me up the wall.

IMA light just went on in our nearly new HCH. Was not able to read
the codes w/ my CarChip. Is a special reader needed for IMA codes?

75 in the summer and 60-65 in the winter is pretty good with a battery that
is being charged most of the time. Charging creates a big load on the motor
and normally should decrease your milage.

In any case a charger wouldn't help you, it would just transfer the energy
it takes to charge from the car to the grid, and since you say it can't keep
the charge, it would charge also while driving. thereby wasting the energy
you have taken from the gird. Have you taken it to the dealer and
complained?

In my opinion, a charger will not help with the problems you are
experiencing.

Oddly enough, these custom IMA battery chargers are available from
Peter Perkins in the U.K. (http://www.solarvan.co.uk/index_files/Page487.htm
). I don't know whether anyone in the U.S. is making them.

Im in Melbourne Australia. There is only supposed to be about 50 Insights in all
of Aus. I bought mine about 2 years ago with the money I got from selling a
1967 911 Porsche which was rusting and no longer wanted. It has about 60000ks
and is basically only used for the odd long distance trip my electric car cant
do or in Winter when my solar system cant supply enough energy for battery
charging. It has battery problems for sure and gets the engine symbol
occasionally. The more you use it the less problems appear with the car. I can
live with these & dont really want to go to Honda as I dread what they will put
in place of what there is now. I get rid of the engine light by disconnecting
the 12V battery which I disconnect anyway in between uses due to drain by
burglar alarm etc. On a trip to Sydney & back recently (2000kms) I had frequent
battery resets and a few check engine on the way up but few on the way back.
Averaged 3.9litres/100ks on ordinary tyres/steel rims mostly at 100k/hr. Trying
to use up these tyres before getting LRR ones. I have some NiMH "sticks" from an
early Prius that I could use instead of going to Honda (enough electrical
knowledge to be dangerous) David S

I'm a dual Insight owner with an 2001 and 2010 model and live in Sunnyvale, CA.

2001 CVT Insight, 53 Lmpg with 64K and 2010 CVT Insight at 46Lmpg with 4K.

There's a blue Insight around the corner from me and I seen at least four 1th
generation's Insights in my local neighborhood.

So far, has have not seen another 2010 Insight.

I use Mac OS X Mail to read and write Yahoo Groups email messages

Where do you get an IMA battery charger and how do you hook it up? I would
really like a charger/discharger.

I'm on my second battery (replaced last May) and either it sucks or the new
hardware/software they installed with it is truly awful (never can keep it
charged - its charging most of the time I'm driving).

I am contemplating the installation of some radio equipment in the trunk
of my 2008 Civic hybrid. I will need to route some cables from the

Is there a cable path established already that I can follow? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Most mail lists have a specific function for a signature block used ONLY in
that group like InsightCentral.org does. But in the case of others like
this one that function is not available. However it isnt that hard to
change it on the fly as I have done on this one.

Hmm, I probably won't be seeing you on the road; I shipped my silver
2000 Insight from Honolulu to Uppsala, Sweden, last summer. I
purchased it from the original owner in June, 2002. It has been
driven only about 25,000 miles total (~62 mpg) which has resulted in
its IMA battery being replaced twice under warranty ("use it or lose
it"). It is no longer under warranty in Sweden, so I now use an IMA
battery charger to attempt to keep the battery's cells in balance to
prevent another premature failure.

At first, Members of Insight-Central posted their locations as members
when they joined.... long ago. Unfortunately the member-info has gone
from the site, but
there's still a lot of worthwhile Insight information to be found
there. Look it over, after signing up at < InsightCentral.net >
As an example of the information to be found there :

The main reason I had in asking for everyones location was that I usually wave
at the person driving an insight and never have a chance to meet them.

There are at least a dozen here in Orange county Calif. The reason I bought mine
in May of 2000 was the fantastic review I got from a guy in the parking lot of
24hr Fitness.

I always wondered if any of those Insight owners I saw in KC were on this list.
Glad to see at least one is.

I know of another Insight owner up in Excelsior Springs, but that's because I
bought my Insight as a direct result of his buying a 2000 model. I'm more
reticent when it comes to buying new technology, so I watched him carefully for
a while and then took the plunge in 2002. Last time I saw him, he still has his
blue Insight and was pushing 200k. Whew!

It takes me to and from Louisville for work every day. It has about

Hi from Doug,
My wife's 2002 Honda Insight CVT has 125K miles, runs great, is still
bulletproof, and is getting 50 to 56 mpg. What a great car! She drives 30
miles each way to work. She use to drive a Nissan Maxima and I figured she
wouldn't like the small car but no problem.
We live in Sunnyvale, Ca, San Francisco bay area.

I have a Dual brand cd/mp3 cd/USB/iPod (headphone jack) player with Bluetooth.
I have a c550 Garmin GPS that does play mp3s, but I put all my MP3's on a USB
Flash drive and plug it right into the front of my Dual Deck. The stock brackets
for the Insight worked fine.

I have a Garmin C550. Some of the Nuvi's such as the 765T can also play MP3's.
The newest 1xxx series unfortunately cannot. The C550 has an audio jack on the
back that I can plug a cassette adapter into and then play the GPS through the
Insight's stock radio. I load the MP3's on a 4GB SDHC card and get several
hours of play time.

changing the CD's can be a pain. However, I tend to use my iPod and/or GPS (with
built-in MP3 player) more now and the tape deck of the original radio allows me
to use a cassette adapter that plugs into the iPod or GPS. That is probably the
only use I can see for a cassette player any more if the radio does not have an
audio input jack.
