Hi,
My name is Joe Lado. I have been very involved with the electrification of the
automobile for many years. Two years ago Jerry Asher with my help took a plug-in
hybrid converted Prius to every state capital in the contiguous United States.
Starting in front of the US Capitol Building and ending back there one year
later. So I am a big fan of gridable-hybrids.

I am a current member of the Board of Directors of the Electric Automobile
Association. I would like to extend an invitation to all hybrid owners to join
our association. We have been around for over 40 years, all the while telling
people about the advantages of having an electric motor in a car. Now, millions
of hybrid owners like you are experiencing what we have known for decades, and
I, personally, am thrilled. The next logical step is gridable-hybrids better
known as PHEVs. I invite you to go to our website http://www.eaaev.org and learn
about our organization.

I am also the host of EVcast.com's EV Power Hour. The EVcast is a podcast
dedicated to hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles presented in a fun
and light hearted manner. We have the news from both the American point of view
with Bo Bennet, Ryan Levesque and Shannon Arivsu on Tuesdays and a British point
of view with Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield on Saturdays and the EVcast Power Hour with
your host Joe Lado (that's me) on Thursday nights. The Power Hour is a show
mainly about all things EV competition related. From electric vehicle dragster
racing to shoe box size Jr. Solar Sprint competitions, from the technical stuff
that makes hybrids and EVs what they are, to interviews with people like last
Thursday's show, Marcelo Da Luz, the builder and driver of the worlds longest
driving solar car the Power of One (Xof1), having gone 22,000 miles and
counting.

You will also find me writing at EVWorld.com as a regular commentator/blogger.

I am interested in all things hybrid, EV and alternative fuel and am looking
forward to reading your comments from this group. I hope to add to the
discussion with my knowledge of electricity and vehicles.

Sincerely,
Joe Lado

Subject: Onstar system will provide data to Volt user, or perhaps much more?
priusmaniac
Send Email Send Email

The onstar system will provide battery charge data and others to the Volt owner. This in turn will allow beter awareness and permit optimum use of EV mode driving.

More at this link:

http://www.plugincars.com/gm-will-provide-connected-volt-owners-longer-free-trial-onstar-43497.html

As I like to speculate on future possibilities, would it be possible to share power between vehicles in connection while driving?

Imagine a power transfer from a well-charged vehicle to a low charged vehicle. Through Onstar information exchange you could be driving next to another Volt, see that that other Volt needs power so much that it's ready to pay a good price for it. You would accept or refuse power sharing and if you accept, your car would start to give power to that other Volt that was about to start it's generator. To transfer power, you could use a dragging wire or an exotic microwave power beaming, but you could also mimick midair refueling systems; a pod would extend at the rear of the volt to connect to the volt behind. That pod would be flexible not to break and yet stiff enough to be able to extend on the distance between the two cars. More a kind of horizontal antenna, if you like. Before that system extend, you would have a synchronization of the two vehicles in a similar way as for a smart cruise control system where the distance between the cars is reduced to the maximum. In terms of electronics, this minimum could be very minimum indeed; not meters, but centimeters, perhaps even less. At a moment, you are close to a bumper-to-bumper situation where electrical power transfer could be as simple as a pair of flexible contactors.

Image a world where some people would be owning a living just by transferring energy to low charge Volts on the road! They would get paid by the difference between the price of the electricity they charged and the price Onstar would pay them for road charging demanding customers.

In a real life situation you are on a road, you see a lonely volt that doesn't want power sharing, you see two other volts almost against one another power sharing with one close to fast emptying its battery to fast charge the other because the drive knows, or its cruise system knows he is just a few miles from home. The other Volt is still a long way from its destination and has already used up 40 EV equivalent miles on its battery; it still has 40 to go, so it fast charges from the other in order not to start its generator for the last 20 miles. The result, the first volt doesn't participate, so be it. The second volt comes home with an empty battery and extra money on its power sharing account. The third volt arrives at its destination with an empty battery, zero gas used and a withdrawal from its power sharing account for a 40 EV miles equivalent that is still less than a 40 gas miles equivalent. No gas has been used, electricity has been shared and everybody has it its way. Extended to all vehicles this system would allow a Volt to cross the US just by powersharing its way with all the commuting Volts allong the road from New York to Los Angeles. No gas use, no battery swap, no oversized battery, just extensive multiple, smart Onstar powersharing use.

hello,

I recently added a plug-in Enginer kit to our 2004 Prius and found that I am in
constant search a 110vac plug around town. I have identified only 2 location
specifically "permit" charging, and a few unlabeled plugs. We live in Los
Gatos, but work in Mountain View.

Is there an official & un-official listings of opportune charging location in
the SJ Bay Area ?

Thanks,

Subject: GM could be getting real about producing the Volt
priusmaniac
Send Email Send Email

GM is still... well GM. That means a company that has been killing the Impact and selling the NiMH battery patents to the devil Exxon. But apparently, there seem to be a hint that the Obama administration has succeeded to turn the company around on plug-in hybrids. So they could after all start to sell the Volt for real. One indication of this was recently given by a recognition that the 40 miles EV range could vary according to conditions. That hasn't much interest in itself because everyone would expect a shorter distance driving up a mountain in freezing conditions rather then driving down in normal weather, but the important element is that they seem to care to transmit this information to potential buyers. Something a GM with no real intention of putting the car on the market wouldn't do. This indicates they are perhaps preparing for a real introduction of the car.

Here is a link to the indicative article:

Environmental-friendly battery boosts 'green' electric mobility
Dr. Christina Heimken press and information Office
Westfälische Wilhelms Universität Münster

04/15/2011 14:52
Project to explore sustainable energy storage systems begins on the battery research centre MEET of the University of Münster
On the battery research centre MEET of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) in Münster, the starting signal for the international research project "LABCAR purple" has fallen today (April 15). The focus is the development of novel energy storage based on lithium air technology. Aim is to make operational the system for automotive applications, explained Prof. Dr. Stefano Passerini of the MEET at the kick-off event. At the same time, the environmental performance of the lithium-air battery to be strengthened and to a sustainable electric mobility. The European Union supports the project with about three million euros, of which more than 560,000 euro for EMU.

The advantage of the lithium-air battery compared to the lithium-ion battery is that she can save more energy with less size. But so far, especially one in the way was the use of technology: the lithium-air battery could not be charged. The problem is now to overcome within the framework of the LABCAR purple project. In addition the energy content of the battery should be made further increase and thus longer range possible of electric cars.

But also the environmental performance of the system plays a crucial role in the project said project coordinator Passerini. Because sustainable energy storage systems are the basis of a "green" electric mobility. So, for example, the recycling of lithium-air battery is an important criterion. In addition to less toxic cell components used and improve security through the use of not flammable electrolytes.

On LABCAR purple ("lithium-air batteries with split oxygen harvesting and redox processes") is an international group of research institutions, universities and companies involved - in addition to the WWU Münster universities from Tel Aviv in Israel (TAU), Kiev, Ukraine (KNUTD), Bologna, Italy (UNIBO), Southampton in England (SOTON), the VW, Chemetall, AVL list GmbH and SAES getter, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the European Research Services GmbH.

The battery research center MEET

MEET stands for "muenster electrochemical energy technology". Here is an international team of approximately 75 scientists working on the development of innovative electrochemical energy storage. Here, the MEET brings together scientific research and industrial applications in one place. As partners are already more than 30 companies on board who represent the entire value added chain in the battery production - from the raw material suppliers to the user. The construction of the battery Centre was supported by the University of Münster, the Federal Government and the land of North Rhine-Westphalia.

integrated with iPhone GPS and iPhone telephone calling. The application is
designed for being fast and intuitive. It is free!

with the locator you can instantly find nearby Electric Charging stations based
on your current GPS location. You can also search based on an address or a zip
code. Because it operates through virtually any cellular phone, the service is
available anytime, anywhere. Once you select your desired business location, you

email the business – all from your iPhone or iPad. You can also plan a route and
