Can't remember the last time Greyhound was in Fort Smith, but now they have two
runs in each direction from Memphis to Little Rock, Fort Smith & Oklahoma City
(run nos. 1359 & 1364 are thru between Memphis-Los Angeles), while Jefferson
continues with the local service between Little Rock-Oklahoma City.

Surely this is no great revelation at all but the Dog has died. A couple days
ago I scanned Greyhound's online schedules and was mortified to see just how
much retrenchment has taken place in scheduled service. My God! The scarcity
of schedules is staggering. There must be only 35-40% of schedules as compared
to just 8 or 10 years ago. Greyhound is barely a hollowed-out shell of its
former self. Has intercity bus passenger service essentially died? The private
auto and discount airlines have killed the business. I used to think from time
to time of taking at least a token ride for maybe 200-300 miles just for old
time sake. But I just don't think I could do it, seriously. I think I'd be too
heartbroken. I used to cringe when the death knell would be sounded for
Greyhound, its rivals, affiliates, partners, etc. I can now no longer stick my
head in the sand. I now agree: The Dog has died!!!

Friends, attached is a shot of a 1942? Pullman Standard former trackless trolley, #5705.

Povidence RI was served by the United Electric Railway.  They were an award winning operator of trackless trolleys, and according to industry publications, would continue to lead.  They even received a new batch of trackless trolleys in 1952.

Suddenly, overnight, they ordered a fleet of GM 5105s in 1953, their first new GMs, and simply did away with the trackless.  The newest ones went to Cleveland, Windsor, and Boston.  The oldest were converted to run on gasoline combined with 2 speed trannies they called torque converters.  Others received Leyland diesels with the same trannies, eventually all got the Leylands.

The drivers gushed over the beautiful characteristics of the trackless vehicles, and cursed and cursed the jalopy conversions they called hybrids as impossible to steer, freezing in the winter, sweltering in the summer.  But workhorses used on every run.

The company name was changed from UER to United Transit Company UTC.  In 1965, the failing UTC was replaced by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, and when 102 new fishbowls arrived in 1966, the Pullmans were scrapped.

Here, 5705 loads in downtown Providence in 1963, next to an exPSCT GM.  This photo is from the Don Champlin Collection.  bill

Friend,

There is a strict idling law in NYC (3 minutes) and it is occasionally enforced at the PABT.  When I drove in there for Bonanza, one would sometimes see the PA cop standing in the shadows with a stop watch.

They changed their emphasis after 9-11.  The Port Authority of NY and NJ cops raced to the World Trade Center, also owned by the PANYNJ.  Of the 37 PA cops killed, 5 were from the Bus Terminal. (23? NYPD cops also died, and 343 firefighters)

The worst day for fumes is the day before Thanksgiving, when the Terminal is gridlocked.  Buses are jamed in the roadway trying to get in and get out and back out.  Buses loaded need to be running so the passengers don't pass out.  The streets around the terminal are gridlocked, because buses cannot get in, and therefore none can get out, and the rush hour traffic enter the Lincoln Tunnel nearby and cause more gridlock.   bill

Is there some kinda of ventilation system in the Port Authority? With all those buses idling, I'm sure its not healthy to breathe the fumes in such confined quarters. I know when I arrived at the Port Authority our driver shut the bus off, just curious what the policy is there. For example, in Denver if they don't shut down they can get ticked. I know there are anti-idle policies, just curious if anyone had any more input. Thanks.

Considering that the source was Allison, I agree that the Volvo 9700s must have the Volvo I-Shift. Frankly, since Volvo has its own tranny, I can't imagine Volvo using anything else. Do you know whether the I-Shift is similar to the ZF Astrionic?

I also have heard the bit re Prevost pursuing business in NY & NJ and I assume thus is for the longer commuter runs currently held down by MCI equipment. X3-45s again?

Years ago when I started at Arrow Line on the bottom of a seniority bid spare board one of the old timers took me aside and said to me in plain terms that I wasn't to get too concerned during slow times, take the time off and enjoy it and be ready to work the 16 - 19 day straight periods when the board was turning faster than there were men to man it.
It was further explained to me that my year's salary would most likely be made in an aggregate period of nine months and the bottom line would be just fine.  Guess what, he was right on.  So I tender this advice to all the new fellows who may be just starting out like Patrick, work as hard as you can when there is work and enjoy the rest when there is not much work.

Hi Patrick,

Like any job, there are always going to be days that do not go your way.   Just hang in there and learn as much as possible and you will be surprised that your trips usually equal out with good and bad.   I have seen driver's that just worked what ever work that came their way, and at the end of the year, they had just as much money in the bank or more than the guys that were always trying to work the board to their advantage.   Since you like the job, you are still going to enjoy a lot of the trips.  Just remember, it is a lot easier than a real job that requires a lot of physical effort.  When you have a problem with a bus just remember that your predecessors had to face all the hurdles that you will face with a bus, except that they had to do it without power steering, which made everythng a whole more effort.  Any time you are working at something you like, you are head and shoulders above your counter parts who may hate their jobs.

Remember Patrick Rizzo - the "youngest" Greyhound operator - working out of Pittsburg, I think it was??

When he joined Greyhound he wrote:

That was back in September. Now, he writes:

Doesn't take long for new drivers to become disillusioned, does it?

Dick - hey also restored the run between Salt Lake City and Denver stopping at
all the small towns, which they had dopped in 1994. Of course there is also a
subsidy being paid to Greyhound.

They re-introduced service to Clewiston, Belle Glade and La Belle in the Florida "sugarlands" a few months ago - probably State-subsidized?

The run, by the way, is operated by a Miami driver, and he overnights 4 nights straight  in Ft Myers.

Interesting to see that GLI is back in a market it had given up several years
ago - Kansas City to Minneapolis. For several years Jefferson Lines has had that
market to itself but GLI has reinstated KC-MSP service with an overnite
northbound run and and afternoon southbound trip.

Also interesting that they're low balling the fare compared to JL - $58 for a
web only far on GLI vs $85 on JL. That's a good fare on a 500 mile sked - just
over 10 cents a mile. GLI also beats JL on time by making just one short stop
in DSM between KC and MSP - very zippy sked, 500 miles in 7 hours 40 minutes on
Sked 6424 northbound. Southbound they stop in St. Paul which adds 40 minutes for
an afternoon pickup in STP. Still only a DSM stop between St.Paul and KC. Four
hours without a driver break DSM-MSP northbound. Long time in the saddle for the
driver. Too long and I'd guess most work a short break stop in somewhere.

JL hits all the towns making 14 stops vs GLI's one stop northbound. Big diff in
philosophy - and JL I believe gets some state subsidies to service the small
town stops.

Shows it's important to click the button next to each separate sked to check
pricing since they may differ and in this case pretty significantly.

Has the Dog returned to any other markets it had dropped.

Glad to see the competition and choice is good for riders like me. I often need
to get to one of the small towns like Owatana or Albert Lea MN so in those cases
my only choice is still Jefferson Lines. JL is always relatively high on fares-
20 cents a mile is common. Will be interesting to see if they respond to GLI on
the KC-MSP run.

Fred -

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 coaches. Because of all the in and outs with the parent Greyhound, it's tough to track.

However, these coaches with the amenities mentioned on the web site, look like new coaches. At least 60572, which is pictured, looks like a Volvo 9700 out of Mexico (natch) and Volvos would be new to the Americanos / Crucero fleet as far as I can tell.

And as busstop30 has pointed out, it looks like the Bolt method of operation transplanted to the southwest. But instead of Prevost coaches they have Volvos which is the same company. I wonder if these 9700's are part of that large Greyhound Prevost order we've heard about?

John,

Thanks for sharing that story, was very funny.    When I worked for Central Ohio Transit Authority we had a similar incident occur. A female operator was assigned to a Reynoldsburg Express run, which deadheaded to that park n ride and ran local for about 2 miles before hitting I-70 west to go downtown.   At I-70 she crosses over I-70 and turns left into the Eastbound entrance ramp and heads East.  Luckily, most everyone on the bus (except the bus driver) was familiar with the area and they started yelling to her letting her know she was heading the wrong way, but it was too late.   She took them all back to the park n ride exit to start their trip all over again, but this time she hit the freeway coming west.   This caused several riders to be late for work, they were not real happy.

Fred,

OK,  was not sure when they moved to Union Station.  If you have not already,  you may want to contact the Motor Bus Society in NJ to see if they may have a photo of that terminal from the past.  I have a copy of the article that they did on Teche Greyhound, but it only includes the Teche Greyhound garage from the 40's era no terminal photo. It does include a photo of the old St. Louis terminal from the 20-30's era for future reference.  Bill Luke spent some time photographing Continental Southern in the 50's if he was in the New Orleans area doing that, I can not imagine him not getting some shots of the Greyhound station while he was in the vicinity.  Another few possible of sources you might try are the library in New Orleans or local newspaper there, either one may have a photo on microfilm from years past.  Finally, you might consider contacting  the Fed Ex public relations department to see if they have any contacts with the Smith family that may have photos of the New Orleans terminal.   Smith Motor Coach (Dixie Greyhound) interlined with Teche, maybe someone in the Smith family has a photo in their personal collection.

Hi Glenn - No, the current terminal is in the original Union Station, where they moved in 1969. The old station on Canal was there from the thirties until 1969.

Ron - I had seen that article before and found it quite enjoyable. Since I did
the history of Greyhound in SLO a nd got information from you, I immediately
went through the article when I saw San Luis Obispo in the heading.

Anytime you see anything like that, feel free to let us know. It's all
relevant, as far as I am concerned.
