I went through the interrogation process and must have hit the wrong
buttons, as it returned an $800 quote. It would not accept zero for the
engine size, even though it said to use zero for electric motorcycles.

Would you consider to send me your VIN so I can contact them directly
and get a reference to your vehicle?

thanks

fred

FWIW, I simply punted and posted my own bond. It's kind of tedious to get
one, but when all's said and done it's like the bond a contractor would
post. Your money stays in your bank, but with its release controlled
by an official of the state. You even get to keep the interest.
Because the bond is tied to you--not your cars--it covers whatever it
is you want to drive. Between the Gizmo and my EV conversion it was
the best way to go for me and my wife.

The exact amounts and how to set one up vary by state. In Washington
(state) you initiate it through their department of the treasury.
But the actual hold is controlled by the depart of licensing, which
is who you start with if you ever need to close out your posted bond.
You end up with a cool looking state document affirming your posting of
the bond (and thus satisfying the financial liability laws). It's
gotten head scratches from all the officials who have needed to see it,
but it always ends up being accepted.

And your rates don't go up.

Andy Valencia

Chris, is there some "inside" information you can get from your agent or

Progressive, to give me a liability policy?

My agent may be losing business unless she can get me coverage.

I had trouble with Farmers at first but then when I told my agent that
Allstate, or was it progressive, would insure it he said, "Good. Now I have
some ammo to use with the company." He basically told them that I had 14
policies with them (I have rental properties) and did they really want to
lose me as a customer. They hand wrote me a liability policy. I haven't
tried to get a full coverage policy.

When I first got mine, I was in Arizona.  DMV was like a Saturday Night Live
skit.  First they said that Electric vehicle could not be registered, then said
the fuel had to be listed as 'Experimental.'  Then I spent more than two days
with them because They wanted to register as a 'Coupe.'  I actually had to
download and print out the vehicle code for them - three wheels on the ground is
a motorcycle.

Lesson:  Expect DMV to be DMV.

Oh, yeah, when I got to New Mexico (Carlsbad), I got registered in about ten

Regarding insurance.
I started in 2001 with Allstate insurance but after a few years they decided
electric vehicles were too unknown..and not worth the risk. I was told I had to
leave Allstate.
So, currently State Farm insures us no problem.
I was told originally the insurance folks like the Gizmo to fit into a 3wheel,
electric moped catagory. I registered this one in Seattle, Wa and they wanted
other terms...and then I registered her in California, and they called her an
electric hatchback. Seemed odd to me....but I guess you & the Dept. Motor
Vehicles in your state have to fish around to find a catagory that your DMV
likes...good luck. IT helped me to bring a photo ....they like to see what the
heck you are trying to describe. The web page is the best....but some of them
cant access that.

We just got Gizmo # 28 back on the road!
The new controller Carl sold us, worked, no problem!!!
We spent the last week charging each battery individually. I had just gotten new
batteries last fall then the controller went out. Foooo. We had driven her a few
times then the controller frizzled. So we charged the batteries several times
since then but I know they don't like sitting around. I hope they love being
used again. Thank you mechanic/engineer, Kev Ashley.

So!
She will be seen on the weekends around Cottage Grove, Oregon.

Whooooopie!!!!
Kelle

Hello Everybody - I have been a member of this group for a while but have never
posted. I own a pizza retaurant in Minnesota and for the past five years I have
been using Gizmos to deliver my pizza! We are moving on to a different type of
vehicle now, so I am looking for some buyers for my used Gizmos. I thought this
might be a good place to look for a buyer since you all have some expertise in
the field of electric vehicles and Gizmo repair. A the moment, I am only
putting one of my remaining four Gizmos up for sale. I will be very
straightforward in saying that this Gizmo is not in good shape. It has been put
through five years of delivering pizza in Minnesota. It would be a good vehicle
for somebody who is looking to restore a Gizmo back to its original glory. I am
asking $500 for it, but I am willing to negotiate. Email me back or give me a
call at the restaurant (612-824-9100) if you are interested!

Thankfully, we just got a controller from Nevco.

It's a Curtis 1205-209 (D) 36-48v.

I am betting we have the car back on the road again this weekend.

We will post about it soon..

Hi Kelle,

While my Gizmo #31 has a different controller and motor, going by its
capabilities you probably have the Curtis 1205-201 Electronic Speed Controller,
450A, 36V-48V. The simplest would be to replace with the same controller. That
way you don't have to figure out mounting holes and where the wires go incase
the Altrax controller puts things in a different place. If I understand how your
Gizmo is setup an Altrax should work fine as long as it is designed to the same
or very similar specifications to your Curtis. If the tech at Curtis Instruments
figures they can rebuild your controller cheaper than replacing it you might
want to go that route. I'm sure Carl can give you more info.

From being on the Electric Vehical Discussion List (evdl.org) I have heard where
some controllers, Curtis amoung them, do not do well with moisture. That might
be what got into your controller over the winter and then fried it when you
turned it on. BTW, what town do you live in? I live in Kelso, WA so if you are
in the greater Portland area I or someone else in the area may be able to come
look at your Gizmo and help you out.

       Hello Kev & Carl,

In trying to track down a replacement controller, this is what I found so far.

My controller blew up or grungily boiled over on the first use after a long
Oregon winter with no garage.

The Controller that had been in my car (Gizmo #28) was this one:

Curtis 1205 (D) (C) serial #355823X

Golf Tech Industries (No longer in business, it seems)

WinterSprings, Florida.

I went looking for the same...

Curtis Instruments tech guy is gonna call me back when he returns from lunch....
Wilfreido is his name. in NY.

I went to the Curtis web site also:

www.curtisinstrumen ts.com

http://curtisinst. com/index. cfm?fuseaction= Contact.Distribu tors

Here I found Electric Vehicles of America (www.evamerica. com). I spoke to Brian
and then Bob. They can distribute for us. However, they don't know which Curtis
1205 we need for my car....I guess there are quite a few Curtis 1205's. Usually
they have 4 digits after that.

The gent, Bob, at Electric Vehicles of America suggested that there is a high
chance for a 48 volt car, that an AllTrax 4834 would work. I didn't ask if that
was a Curtis or not.

I wish I understood more about this stuff....but I don't see studying time
anyday in the near future. I am so grateful to all of you who do and are so
helpful.

Ok, Carl? Do you know if I can use an AllTrax 4834? or is there someone else who
can supply a more suitable controller?

Thank you Carl,

Thank you Kev and the User's Group too!

Kelle

The sensor is "required" by the Zivan charger to determine battery pack
temperature to ensure it does not overheat, as best as I can detemine. I
think I had to purchase it, as it didn't come with the vehicle. This
was more than a year ago, so I am not certain why I had to have it, but
I think the charger would have failed to work without it, based on the
flashing error codes. It might be possible to program the charger to
ignore not having a sensor attached.

The F/R switch was installed when I got the vehicle, a slick rubber
covered toggle switch. The wiring is cable-tied to the frame tubing,
for some of it, but I was able to snake a few smaller wires into the
frame tubing. I installed a PakTrakr and a CycleAnalyst which needed
wiring from the pack to the dash.

I checked my logs today and it has been one year and one week since the
Gizmo first rolled. A bit more than 1700 miles on the Gizmo, with
probably 5000 miles on the WAW (velomobile) and very few miles on my
wife's Xebra or the ICEs.

Since I didn't feel comfortable letting my pack sulfate while it dried
out without a full charge, I took my air compressor hose and nozzle to
the temp sensor for the charger. A few spurts later and it's a-chargin'
away. Fifteen minutes later, it's alerting with the klaxon tone and not
chargin' away. More air application and I managed to get a full
overnight charge.

Strange thing, though. After a full charge, I checked the pack voltage
and it was good, green light on the charger, but later that morning, the
charger went klaxon again.

I'm going to give it a good while to dry out more completely and hope it
doesn't alert again.

Late in the same day, I also engaged the controller and found that the
Gizmo rolls under power too!

I agree completely about not driving in such conditions. My velomobile
has 3" clearance to the bottom of the cockpit and another two inches to
my own bottom. I would have been operating a submarine instead of a
velomobile had I attempted to travel using that mode. I had to resort
to using the stinker today, due to the continuing accumulation and
climbing water levels.

I am hopeful that it will dry out and begin to work again, if the rain
would ever cease long enough for that. I've previously injected
silicone dielectric grease in all the molex connectors in the wiring and
that's probably why it works so well in the wet.

I'm also hopeful that the charger indication is simply a wet thermal
sensor, but that's an expensive little device, if I remember correctly.
I didn't have one when I got the vehicle (I think) and had to order one
to make it work, but my memory is so faulty, I can't be sure of that
aspect.

My battery box has "floor mats" under all the batteries (Deka Dominator)
and spacers between of the same material. It's an interlocking rubber
foam material used for kiddie play areas and for areas where people have
to stand for long periods of time. It's also an insulator. That said, it
would be great if that's the answer. I'll be taking my wife's hair
dryer to the garage tomorrow to see what progress I can make. I know
from experience that my 400 deg F heat gun will cause more damage than
it corrects!

I may be complaining more than I am justified. Too many people are
dealing with six and twelve inches of non-receding water in too many
places in the general Daytona Beach area.

In the mean time, check the connections on the controller, especially
multi-pin connectors. Dry them out with a blow dryer. In Oregon, where we
have some rainy days, we have put silicon onto the back of these connectors
if we have these interruptions of power and it has helped.

Also, if the battery box has water in it in between the batteries, it may be
causing a short with the box and the battery terminals. We have seen this a
few times in the past.

I hope this helps.

As of Wednesday May 20, 2009, Daytona Beach has collected from the sky
twelve inches of rain. It seems that the roads are that deep in the
water, but that would be exaggerating in some locations and understating
others.

I had little choice but to use the Gizmo on a client call Wednesday and
had to drive through some of the deep stuff. I'm sure the battery box
collected a bit of water, but it has drain holes. My foot well managed
to catch a wave or two, too.

I made it eleven miles to my client with no problem at all, and they let
me pull into the garage for a charge. Fifteen minutes later, the charger
is shut down and alerting. I learned today that the flashing yellow
indicator and audible alert (according to the manual) means remote
sensor disconnected (it's not) or the thermal sensor is out of range. It
should not be out of range, with 70 degree temps lately. It could be
wet, but that should not be an issue, right?

I figure that I can still make the 11 mile return trip, since I've got a
198 Ah pack and I'll take it really easy. Nope. The Sevcon controller
is doing a dual-flash fault, which I've found is an indication that the
Forward/Reverse switch is not in neutral. Unfortunately, it is in
neutral.

These faults happened simultaneously, so they must be related, yes?
Since we are continuing to get more rain, it will take a while for the
Gizmo to dry out and I'd really like to know why it's faulting on two
different fronts.

Any ideas from the wiser minds of the group?

My forward reverse switch is on my dash panel, left side and the key
switch under the left steering lever is power on, only. The other
contacts are cut completely off.

That's why it all does not make sense. Rather than try to consider it as
two interrelated problems, I'm going to attack each one individually,
once Noah's Ark comes to collect me and my belongings, or once the rain
lets up and the waters recede!

If all else fails, one could purchase a small quantity of heat shrink

tubing for a reasonable price, cut to length and then heat it in place.

The wear factor might not be very high, but the price would be

tolerable, even though the labor factor would certainly be comparatively

high, as well.

I hope you find them. Let me (us) know when you find them. I didn't think to get
some when I got the Gizmo as they were showing some wear then. Now they are
completely worn out.

Thank you,

We found these small tubes in an industrial supply catalogue and actually

adjusted the size of the metal bolt so they would fit. We were trying to

reduce the squeaks and we had a hard time finding a sleeve that would last

very long. We bought a fairly large quantity and I've been trying to find it

in the bins of parts we are keeping in a rental unit but so far no luck. I

don't think it was a regular supplier, but one with special plastics.

I just took a quick look at http://www.smallpar ts.com/

well.

I jumped out to the garage to see what you were viewing, on my own

experiencing that led you to discovering the sleeve problem?

If all else fails, one could purchase a small quantity of heat shrink
tubing for a reasonable price, cut to length and then heat it in place.
The wear factor might not be very high, but the price would be
tolerable, even though the labor factor would certainly be comparatively
high, as well.

I generally use my index finger. Sometimes I use my middle finger but being a
trumpet player I've never had any trouble with the sensitive throttle. Also, now
that I have the new Gizmo Interface, when I hit the brake I can also pull the
trigger for variable regen if I wish. This comes in handy for quick stops.

I realize there aren't many of us Gizmo drivers active in this group.

Perhaps we are all out driving our Gizmos!

Since the trigger throttle is somewhat sensitive, I was wondering today

what finger of your hand do you use on the throttle?

I had been using the index finger, but found the movements to be greater

than desired. With my index finger above the throttle, I feel I have

more control of smaller movements using my second, middle finger.

What say you?
