I got this e-mail the other day, apparently it was meant it to go to the persons
addressed, and it came to me instead. It said: “I think you came on a little
strong about the ‘chicken shit club’, any mail response?”
I have nothing but appreciation and respect for the guys who reached out with
the best of intentions and good-willed efforts, and made the Flx Club happen in
the first place. It was such a good idea that it has attracted how many now,
250? 300? I need an update.
Nothing that comes out of my mouth, keyboard, or brain is meant viscously. The
intention behind what I say is meant in good-natured humor. “I wonder what he
meant by that” should always be taken as humor from me.
That WAS me who said “chicken-shit club”. Part of the SPIRIT of this club is the
campfire hangin' out stuff. Working with the wrenches is part of it, but the
interaction between people with similar interests is more appealing to me.
"chicken-shit club" was not referring to the quality of the Club, or any
disrespect of it’s traditions. It was intended to get some more communication
happening with this new “computer stuff.”. Shake the bushes and see what flies
out. I hadn’t seen much happening.
The result was a couple postings on the BB that I thought were positive. I got a
couple e-mail responses. Florida's warming up...Vermont sounds good.
The California guy can shift better now, and the West Coast Caravan is comin'
next time. All good stuff. New friends...
One guy e-mailed me directly, thought I had a bad "attitude".
That is precisely who I want to talk to.
One guy spoke up...I wonder how many others felt that way but didn’t express it?
If I have a problem (with my bus OR me), I want it fixed.
If someone else has a problem, I want that fixed too.
Why It triggered a positive reaction in some, and a negative reaction in others
is interesting to me. These are only words on a screen, the interpretation is
individual.
Felt I came on too strong?
I want the effect of my life to be: I left things better than the way I found
them.
A guy had to sell his donkey.
It was his favorite donkey...broke his heart to have to sell it.
He's interviewing buyers to find a GOOD home for it.
Finds a guy he likes, gives him the money...they go around back to get the
donkey.
Owner picks up a 2X4...smacks the donkey “a beauty” up-side the head.
The buyer is astonished..."WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?"
"You just got done telling me you wanted to find someone who would take GOOD
care of your donkey, then you turn around and go smack him with a 2X4.”
Seller says: "You can take him now...I just had to get his attention first."

Hi folks,
Took the day off from working on my dead white elefant. It's gotten to the point
that I'm going in circles with this thing so I decided to put it aside for a
while. Today I fired up my old 650 Triumph. I know this has nothing to do with
Flxibles but I felt the need to hear a blast from the past. The slides in the
carbs are so worn out from vibration that it's no longer possible to adjust the
idle. So I started instaling a pair of carbs from an old Moto Guzzi, should have
it civilized by tomorrow night.
About the bus, it's a '48 Flx Clipper- Visicruiser 29'. I've made a new,
slightly longer engine cradle, the old one had many stress cracks, obsolete
holes and brackets from various re-powers through the years. The new engine is a
BF6L913 Deutz air cooled diesel engine out of a '83 GMC C7000 truck. It's a 6
liter straight 6. The motor is only slightly longer than the original straight 8
Buick engine but it produces about 400 ft/lbs torque which I think is too much
for the 265V Clark 5 speed. I'd like to use a 6 speed Allison but that only
leaves a 10 inch drive shaft. Maybe that would work, I don't know. When I placed
the motor in the new subframe I was careful to match the 5 degree angle of the
pinion shaft of the differential and to line it up straight. Maybe it would
work. The other problem is that there is no room left for the air compressor so
my plan is to add a pair of pulleys to the existing pulley on the crankshaft to
drive a pair of belts that will drive about a 3' long pto shaft along the top of
the motor that will drive the compressor. That part is a little weird but it
should work. Anyway that's what I've been up to. My goal is to be blasting down
the road by mid June. See ya, Bob Adame, Fort Collins, Colorado.

Hello Florida,
What did you see at the Loudenville Rally that caught your eye?
What engine/transmission set-up do you have in your Clipper?
Is your bus air conditioned?
Those of us STUCK up North here all winter are not going to listen to any
whine-y Florida weather reports until at least mid-July...when it's our turn to
gloat about the weather... My sister just moved outside of Orlando, she said the
summers down there are UNBELIEVABLY hot. She had the nerve to tell me some days
it's too hot to swim in the pool.
The trees are just starting to bud here in Pgh. The grass is just begining to
sprout up and the temp. is 60-70. I'm expecting the allergies to start any day
now. This is a pretty time of year up here.
St Augustine is the oldest Spanish settlement in Florida isn't it? What is there
to see history-wise around there? Do they like old buses down there?

Howdy all,
I,ve e-mailed some of you folks individually but not the board as a whole.
My name is Harry Lewis. My wifes is June and we have three kids.
Doug-15,Brandi-12, and Joshua-8. We reside in jacksonville beach, fl. .
Just north of St.augestine. We own a ,as you could guess by my e-mail address
a 47 clipper. We've had ours about 2.5 yrs. And is still in the process
of being converted. The inside is about complete, but after the Loudenville
rally we found some things we need to go back and change. We're not going
to make it to the summer rally as we have already made plans to tour the
smoky mtns. and visit some friends. We sometimes miss the spring in the
greatlakes area of Toledo,Oh. which used to be our home . The mild temps.
in the spring are nice. We've already reached 90 degrees and are hangin out
in the air conditioning. If anyones planning a trip to fl. and need a
stop-over
point for a day or two, let us know. We're three miles from the ocean and
about 3.5 hrs. north of disney. And we have complete hookups with cable. If
any one lives in the nashville area let me know also. We're heading up there
the end of June . Could stop by for a visit.
See ya Harry

Hi Flx owners!!
I'm new to the internet and thought I'd answer some replies. I have a
1960 Flx Hi Level and am a member of FOI. Looking forward to the rally in
Mass and would like to know more about Vermont. We just spent a week skiing
in Stowe in Feb. with the bus. It's a long trip for us but it might be
interesting if you have something good going on. The weather in Pgh isn't
all that bad. Spring is on its way. The guy in Pgh, what model Flx do you
have? We just got back from Texas and the maxi's wouldn't release a couple
times. I guess I'm going to have to put on new rear brakes. For anyone who
hasn't been to a Flx rally, they really ought to try it. It's tons of fun!
I'd love to see a peanutbutter fish.

Hey Modre@...,
Jeeze... get up on the wrong side of the bus this morning? Good note. I agree
with you and we'll take it up in Mass this July! Got a date with a movie
company in Montreal the 23rd through 26th of this month with my '57
Starliner. They are using it in a street scene. Have taken all modern gear
off the bus (like tv antenna, etc) and am taking a shakedown cruise this
Sunday to Quebec (with a dozen or so brave friends) to a "Cabane a' Sucre."
It's a 1,500 people maple sugar house (with a big parking lot) that serves
maple-laden all you can eat dinners (lots of music, Canadian beer and
sugar-on-snow). Then back to a Vermont maple operation with 36,000 taps for
coffee. It's a real Springtime Maple Cruise you don't get to do very
often.... especially in a Flx.
You think those Myrtle Beach jellyfish are bad... you ought to see the Lake
Champlain peanutbutterfish!
If you're really looking for a bus trip with some PAZAZZ.... I run a food
festival here in Burlington, Vermont the weekend of June 25-27 featuring 40
restaurants and Vermont Food Producers (great music all weekend from oldies
rock... this year, The Rascals... to country, western swing and big band!).
It's the 14th Annual Vermont Food Fest; The Green Mountain Chew Chew (train
motif) right on the shores of Lake Champlain. Good weather attendance at
60,000, bad weather attendance 40,000 wet people. I can provide bus parking
on site (what the hell, I own it!) and would be happy to see any Flx families
pull in for some fun and feasting! I'll gladly send further info on request!

Theres not enough chatter on this board. This is the only place I know of
specifically for Flx people. There must be something of interest someone is
doing somewhere. What kind of a chicken shit club is this??? Give me a reason to
want to belong. The original founders are either fading out, or abstractly
cruisin' the country. If the new blood doesn't pick up the slack, there won't be
any club left. Contribute. What are you doing on your bus? Did you draw blood
recently? Where have you traveled to? What did you see? What are you having
trouble with?
Last June we cruised down to Myrtle Beach. Kids were crazy about playing in the
waves, I got stung by a jellyfish. They're cruel down there if you have a
motorcycle. You can't ride thru the campgrounds, they actually make you get off
and push it like you're some errant little kid who needs to be punished. After
one day of that crap-ola, we went to the Outer Banks Rodanth KOA for 3 days. It
was absolutely beautiful. Most everyone had RV's & campers so we were quite a
conversation piece when we pulled in with a '56 Clipper. We did run into a
couple of other bus people. It was 95 degrees (80 at night)with the most
succulent constant breeze to keep the bugs away. We bought kites that looked
like birds. The crabs on the beach at night with a flashlight was fun. We went
down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and ate shrimp cocktail for breakfast. Then
we saw the Wright Bros. Museum. Interesting stuff. Quite by surprise, on the way
back, we passed the garage where they built the "Gravedigger" BigFoot Killer
Truck. Of course, we had to turn around and check that out. Next we saw the new
discoveries at the Jamestown Settlement. then came up the Shenendoah Valley back
to Pgh.
Who is planning to go to Dighton, Mass. this July to sit in a field without
facilities? And who's idea was that? Next time lets do something with a little
PA-ZAZZ. Lets hear some suggestions on that. Henry Ford Museum? Dinosaur bones?
Beaches? Gorgeous Vistas? History stuff? Bus Drag-racing? Naked Bar-B-Q?
Looking forward to getting back out on the road this year. Anyone got any good
vacation destination suggestions?

lot of the interior, run electric, put the water tank under the rear bed and has

The passenger side of the bus keeps sinking. Was an inner city bus, thus it also
has a governor which we have been told, can be overridden.

>
Hi guys,
First of all I've been working on mine for 18 years, don't think it all has to
be done this month. Take time to RELAX & enjoy it? The more you look around, the
better ideas you get.
SINKING: sounds like a leak in an air bag or line that feeds it. You're going to
have to get under it with the soap bubbles. If you know an air conditioning guy,
he could pressurize the system with Freon and check it out quicker with an
electronic leak detector. Any official safety inspection will check how long it
takes to lose air pressure. Any significant leak is frowned upon.
GOVERNORS:
1. There's an adjustable governor to control the air pressure. You can play with
it all you want. You need 80-90 lbs. of air to have good brakes.
Ballpark setting would be in kick in at 75 lbs. out at 100.
2. There's an adjustable governor to control engine top speed. DO NOT SET IT
OVER THE RECOMMENDED SPEED. The easier you run a big engine, the longer you have
it. Don't over-rev it, there's just too much weight spinning around. Common
redlines for big engines are 2400-2800RPM.
3. InnerCity buses don't need to go fast, so they are geared low for
start/stopping. If you want 75MPH on the highway, you need to change the axle
ratio, transmission, or put bigger diameter rear tires on it. If the guy who
sold it to you, told you to rev it up for more speed, go back and smack him for
lying to you.
Look for the axle ratio info on the VIN Plate or the axle housing.
Or...jack the rear end up and turn the differential input. Count how many
rotations it takes to make the wheel turn one full turn. It's probably somewhere
between 6.5/1 & 7.5/1. For 75MPH you will need around a 5/1 ratio.
Did you get the maintainance manual with the bus?
If not, get one. They're solid gold.

Thanks for turning me onto the flxible web site. I have been trying for over a
week to find sites like this, and wasn't finding anything flxible...Just aquired
a 453 powered '52 that has been out of circulation for anout 20 years. Drove it
home with my fingers crossed (hoses and tires very rotten). Engine, drive lines,
and brakes are flawless, no smoke, no leaks, with top speed of about 55mph.
Older conversion, needs lots of TLC. Body clean, with little rust (however,
missing a few knick-knack trim parts). Can't wait to see some similar busses.
Know of any in northern California? ID# 4d18613. Was one a passenger bus in
southern California. If anyone knows of any history or have any comments, they
would be greatly appreciated.

Dick Marsan made me come here. I guess all new things are a learning curve. Just
wanted to check in and say "Hi" to all the beautiful Flx people.
By way of introduction to anyone I haven't met at the last 2 Flx Rallies in
Loudenville, I'm from Pgh. Pa. Long suffering wife Beverly, who puts up with all
the Flx mental abuse, & 3 daughters run the whole damn place around here. I've
got a '56 Clipper with the much touted original Fageol engine still running
strong long after all the neigh sayers and "quiters" have repowered theirs. I'm
currently building a 440 Mopar just in case of surprizes down the road. Just put
new brake shoes all around over the winter. Sucker stops now...I hit the brakes
and everyone comes up front to see me.
Thanks to RC for setting this site up for the Flxers. Let's hear some chatter
out there. I spent 18 years and a zillion bucks to make this old bus run, I'm
ready to start enjoying it...Damn it. Who are you? Where are you? What do you
got? What do you know? Who are you with? Who dressed you like that?.

In the interest of starting some discussion or arguement, here's a little
survey. What engine, transmission, differential ratio are you using? Are you
satisfied with the combination? Considering the space we have to work with,
what would you say is the ultimate setup? What is your top speed, fuel mileage?

I'm still working on re-powering my dead flx and am considering using a stronger
transmission. Two concerns, the current transmission is a 260 series 5 speed
clark which came with the bus. Bus was powered by a 4-53 Detroit. Will this
trans handle 380 to 440 (charge air cooled) FT/Lbs torque? If not, what trans.
will? The Clark is about 21 inches long. I need to stay with a trans. that is
not much longer than this. My current driveshaft is 17 inches long from center
to center at the u-joints. Does anyone have experience using a driveshaft say 12
or 13 inches long? By the way, I finally figured out that my differential is a
Timken. Thanks, Bob Adame

As a start, you will need the mfgr tag info off of 1. The axle housing and
2. The third member.
Something strange about this tho-- IIRC, Rockwell bought Timken Detroit
Axle Company in the late fifties. I don't think that Rockwell Standard was
much in the axle business before that--Hmmmm.
Any idea what the axle came out of?? How did you determine "Rockwell"? Are
the housing tubes round or rectangular?
The housing tag is usually on the rear side of the passenger side axle
housing tube, mebbe 6 inches to the right of the round rear cover. The
third member tag is usually on the passenger side of the casting, a bit
above the pinion centerline. If tags are gone (they are riveted on, tho)
try to find the casting number on the third member, and mebbe a mfgr name
and/or logo cast in. May also be some numbers die stamped into the housing
in about the location described for the tag.
