Re: FlxOwners...Post... Re: Best bus for conversion
I appreciate the honesty and though this is an Flx board I knew it could be a loaded question for some. As I mentioned before I am new to this and trying to find the best fit for us. I definately like the lines of the Flxies and there are SOB's that have appeal as well. I know everyone is here because of there passion for the Flxible and I appreciate your dedication to your hobby, lifestyle and willingness to help each other with your experiences. With that said thanks for your honesty.

" My question is what would the pro's and con's of say a GMC or MCI be in comparisson to a Flxible? And advantages of a Flxible over the SOB?"
A very dangerous question on a Flx board , but since I own a Sportscar of Coaches (GM 4106) as well as a VL 100 I will attempt a small response.
The same sized coach 35 ft the GM because of their angled engine instalation (V drive) has more useable floor room , almost as much as a T drive 40 footer.
This v drive is a blessing and a curse as it is designed for GM 2 stroke diesels which limits engine transplants to the backwards running Detroits. It also limits the modernization of the coach as the transmission and rear axle must be for the V drive . Truck(T drive)direction engines can only be installed with a special GM auto trans , gearing and rear axles don't have much choice. Most folks just stick to "as delivered" and drive forever with really reliable stock drive trains.3,000,
000 miles is an frequent claim, but of course not with the same engine.
The GM's run on air bags , about $80 each and need leveling valves $35 X 3 every 15 years or so.THe Flx is on rubber springs that are VERY pricy , and the ride is different. The GM will sway side to side , but levels itself in a long corner. The Flx pitches fore and aft but wont level in a corner. Music groups prefered the Flx and Eagles as it was easier for 15 folks in bunk beds stacked in to take pitching than swaying.
There were way more GM made than FLX so parts are easier and cheaper and Da Book for GM is fantastic , explains every item in the coach remove and repair. The FLX book is perhaps 10% as useful, but more parts come from the std truck world so parts are still out there.
The GM have almost all aluminum monocoque construction , so they are far lighter and stronger than can be done by skinning a rusting steel frame as FLX and Egale
do.The SS of a FLX will polish up and look shinier than the aluminum ever can , with less effort.
Looks , Bay sizes and all the rest can be covered by another poster..
Our reason , after 15 years of GM ,for switching is that our camping STYLE is changing. We have used the Sportscar for living aboard for 2 -3 months at a time , but mostly for snowbirding between FL & Ct. Much of our recreation is on boats , but we have done the East Coast ,ICW ,Maine, the Loop, Bahamas , Bermuda 5 times , the Caribbean 2 times , so were looking for a change.
The VL will have a more modern power plant DD ser50 and best of all both Jake Brake and retarder. This will allow a Western ,play in the big hills ,touring, camping as well as allow towing a 10,000# boat to play in the inland lakes and rivers.
The Monocoque construction on a GM allows towing a trailer with only about 300# tongue weight , 15% of a 10,000 boat is far too
much.
Our Sports Car of Coaches is complete and ready to go, should someone want a "SOB".
