Re: [Flexit SCC] Fork Stiction / not parallel !

Hi Paul

Very interesting info
There was a thread a while ago about wheel bearing failing very quickl by some
owners, me included.
I was checking mine over at the weekend and realised that the wheel spindle and
the spacers were quite the right length, so that if you tightened up the wheel
spindle it would be putting pressure on the inside of the bearings.   Which may
give some understanding of why the wheel bearings were wearing out so quickly.
Oh I havent rectified the problem yet

Hi all,
I recentley had to sort out the common problem of air loss from my flexits
suspension. The movement of the suspension had deteriorated and would stay
compressed when pushed down and have to be lifted back up. It has always
suffered some stiction but now with the air loss it was time for an overhall. So
the units were sripped and cleaned and inspected, I even checked the stanchions
for straightness and all was found to be okay.
I put 15ml of fork oil in each leg and then with a suitable blanking plug and
valve fitted pumped in 20psi and laid each leg in the bath to check for leaks,
none were found.
The stanchions rebounded back reasonably freely while off the sidecar but when I
re-fitted them they stuck in possition just as before. Having come across a
similar problem on a bike years ago I decided to check the forks for parallel.
It turned out that they were 5mm narrower at the bottom of the stanchion than
the top. The measurements were taken at the point where the stanchions exit the
fork body and also just above where the axel/spindle mount collars are fitted,
using an internal micrometer.
The solution was to pack up one side of one shock body by 1.25mm. There was no
sign of wear in the glass fibre around the mountings so I pressume that they
must have been that way from new!
With the stanchions parallel it has been necessary to fit an extra 5mm spacer in
to the wheel. The suspension now rebounds much better than it ever did before.
By the way the air was leaking back through the compressor, so I fitted
isolating valves.
My flexit was built buy EZS in 1994 and is a lefthand fitment.
Cheers
Paul
