My 94 aspire is a automatic and it did much the same thing, we did a tune p and
all plugs looked good but one of them had the wire pulled up in the boot at
higher rpm it did fine but at idle with lights on it wouldnt hardly take off. So
I guess it dont take much, good luck. Dennis

It may just need to have the idle set up a little due to changes in fuel, and
wear in the engine. There is a black rubber plug on top of the throttle body
with an adjusting screw underneath it. Adjust the idle up slightly with the
engine running. If it requires only a slight change to take care of the problem,
that may be all you need to do.

I've seen these at least a dozen times, but I still enjoy them...
DRILL PRESS :
A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock
out of your hands, smacking you in the chest, flinging your beer across the
room, and denting that freshly-painted project you had so carefully set in
the corner where nothing could get to it.
WIRE WHEEL :
A rotary abrasive tool that cleans paint off bolts and then throws them
somewhere under the workbench at the speed of light. Also removes
fingerprints and hard-earned calluses in precisely the time it takes to
say, "Oh, sh*t."
SKILL SAW :
A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.
PLIERS :
A clasping device used to round off bolt heads. May also be used to create
blood-blisters.
BELT SANDER :
An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into
major refinishing projects.
HACKSAW :
One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. Eerily
capable of transforming human energy into crooked, unpredictable motion.
The more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future
becomes.
VISE-GRIPS :
Generally used after pliers to ensure that bolt head is perfectly round. If
nothing else is available, they may also be used to transfer intense
welding heat to the palm of your hand.
OXYACETYLENE TORCH :
Used almost entirely for creating fires from various flammable objects in
your shop. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub from
which you want to remove a bearing race.
TABLE SAW :
A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood
projectiles. Excellent for testing sheet rock integrity.
HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK :
Large portable lifting tool, generally used for lowering an automobile to
the ground after you have installed your new brake pads, trapping the jack
handle firmly under the bumper.
BAND SAW :
A large stationary power saw primarily used to cut expensive aluminum sheet
into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut
on the inside of the line instead of the outside.
TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST :
A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of every wire, hose, and
cable you forgot to disconnect.
PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER :
Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style
paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt. May also be used,
as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.
STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER :
A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted
screws into non-removable screws, Ideally suited for butchering the human
palm.
PRY BAR :
A tool used to crush the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed
to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.
HOSE CUTTER :
A tool used to make hoses too short.
HAMMER :
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a
kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive part adjacent to the
object you are trying to hit. Unusually effective for smashing the thumb
that is holding the object you are trying to pound. Can effectively
eliminate the need for thumbnail manicure for up to 4 months. (see also:
Son of a B*tch Tool)
UTILITY KNIFE :
Extremely sharp tool used to slice through the contents of cardboard
cartons delivered to shop; works particularly well on contents such as
replacement leather upholstery, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles,
collector magazines, refund checks, and expensive rubber or plastic parts.
Especially useful for ventilating work clothes, but only while such clothes
are in use.
SON OF A B*TCH TOOL :
Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling,
"Son of a b*tch" at the top of your lungs. Invariably, it is also the next
tool that you will need.
You need to really soak the inside of the drum. Obviously you will get the
stuff on the brake lining and there will be some smoky rear brakes, well
maybe.
The parking brake is the only way the rear brakes actually get adjusted. On
my '91 the rear cables were hosed and I had no parking brake. What happened
is one shoe on the drivers side rear was worn and was the only one of the
four in the rear to actually do any braking.
The parking brake cable pulls on a spring loaded ratchet. If there is a lot
of corrosion it does not work. But it does only work through the parking
brake.

Robin,
Please do take care of the brake hose. You generally get a second chance
to go. You rarely get a second chance to stop.
Glad you found the fuse problem. BTW, now would be a good time to swap the
old fusible links (the wire things that act as fuses for the Main,
Headlight, and PTC circuits) with cartridges. I'd suggest 40A for the
Main, 20A for the others. You can buy them at just about any parts
place. $10-15 for all 3.
Burgess
www.rockauto.com has a selection of brake hoses for less than $20.00 each if you
cannot get them from your local parts house.

We as a group need more info in order to narrow things down for you. What
year? Will the engine crank when you turn the key? If it does crank does the
exhaust smell like gas?
I'm concerned deeply about your brakes, even more than the car not starting.
After all, what good is a car that will move but not stop?

My Ex-husband removed my radio and now the Festiva will not start. Plus the
Brake fuild keeps going empty and have to refill and the light on the dash is on
"Brake". At this moment what could have he done to make the car not start.
thanks,

If the ignition run wire was used as a power source for the radio and is
disconneced, it could cause this. Also he could have blown the ignition fuse
when removing the radio. Check the fuse first.

I jacked the car up and checked the cables. They were free but dangling a
little. I put the parking brake on and they tightened up, just enough to put
substantial drag on the wheel, but I could spin the wheel with a lot of force. I
sprayed penetrating oil on all joints of the cable and where it enters the
backplate. I will try working the parking brake each time I park the car and see
what happens.

And the ultimate solution to future parking brake adjustment problems is
implied by Paul's response: always use the parking brake, even if you're
parking on dead flat ground.
It's the only way to assure the adjuster -- and the brake itself -- keeps
working.

IIRC the parking brakes are adjusted when you use them. Could be rusted
up. I would try spraying some rust buster in there without taking the hub
off and working the parking brake..
I replaced my cables and over hauled the rear brakes on the '93 but never
could get one side to work very well.

A couple of years ago I had a local shop put new rear brakes on my Fester.
Yesterday I noticed the parking brake isn't holding well.
Question: Is the parking brake cable the only adjustment for the rear brakes or
is there a traditional adjustment starwheel on them?
Randy
