Shut down on 4200GT   Message List

Re: [enricosmaseratipages] Re: Shut down on 4200GT

If the engine shut down at traffic light, might be a dirty idle control valve.  Just clean it up with WD40/Carb cleaner will do.  The trouble is the 20 minutes it took to re-start the car.  My experience is the camshaft sensor.  At the very beginning it is the occasional no-start.  Then one morning it will be no-start and you keep cranking until your battery all drained out.  It is just a GPB36 item (for 3200GT) and easy to change.

Lots of possibilities.
Fuel seems the most likely problem.
I have seen everything from lack of gas tank venting, to leaky fuel injector.
Installing a fuel gauge will tell if there is a leaky injector, because pressure will drop too fast when you shut down.
Unscrewing the gas cap will show a lack of venting if you hear rapid sucking sound.
Other possibilities include overheating or vapor lock.

When the "check engine" light goes on, that should be stored and be possible to read back with and inexpensive tool.

The whistle noise seems normal from the turbochargers.

I never worked on a 3200, but I am assumming it has a high pressure fuel injection system, which then is not likely to vapor lock. But the gas tank is another...

The gas tank venting differs from year to year. Mine is an old 1984, so it is not likely the same. But is has a "rollover" valve that is supposed to shut off...
