RE: [DML] Catalytic converter

Jon:

My cat came apart and terminally clogged the muffler. It can happen and
will result in low power. It was not very noticeable at idle but on
acceleration there was a loud his and low power. In my case it was
pretty obvious what had gone wrong.

If your car does not idle well, then its probably fuel or ignition.
Check for good spark, good spray patterns from the injectors, even
volume from the injectors, and for vacuum leaks.

Tom

Subject: [DML] Catalytic converter

Howdy

I'm Jon and new to the list. I recently purchased my first delorean,
it's a 1982 with fuel door. My question is the engine runs real bad when
cold, and runs a bit better when warm. I am familiar with Bosch early
fuel injection as I have restored my far share of VDubs. The question I
have is do the catalytic converters in the DMC 12 have a history of
colapsing or cloging? It seems to me the engine is being very sluggish.
and not very responsive to engine throtle. Could this be due to the
converter or does anyone have another answer like injectors, timing,
etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

By the way I live in Texas

I see that the O2 detector is located before the cat converter. If I was to eliminate the CAT, would I have any problems with the O2 sensor system? Does...

... No. It's there to fine-tune the mixture beause of the cat, but it'll carry on doing this job without one. You'll notice better fuel economy and performance...

What's involved with "de-catting"? Is there a piece of pipe available to replace the cat? Since my car doesn't need to pass an emissions test in MA, is it...

I believe it's federally mandated to have a catalytic converter installed. Technically you can get away with it if you don't have inspections, but it's still...

I believe that in the US it's still a federal offense for a commercial shop to remove the catalytic converter, regardless of age. Not that anyones looking, but...

Over here in Europe we often replace the cat with a pipe. No problems found yet. Your only "problem" might be the replacement pipe. Try Ed Uding at DMC Europe,...
