Absolutely, I agree.  For those who think carriage racing is too tame

You could mount a sprocket to the spoke like the little motorized bicycles do, but I don’t think that would hold up too well to the rigors of cyclekarting.

Maybe only good for front wheels…

I didn't see the chrome spoked wheel when I was looking thru the kingston-saddlery website, but after Jeff posted that link I also noticed that the spoked wheel has a 5/8" bearing ID.

I wonder what the weight of the 8-spoked wheel I originally linked is? I don't see a weight specified.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to convert these wheels for use at the rear? There's nothing to drill thru for the four hub bolts.

I do know that a go kart I had used 5/8" axles and a three wheel bike rated for 750lbs I have uses a 5/8" axle . I image it depends on how hard you drive it . I'm sure a 3/4" axle would be better  , but a Ferrari would be better then the econo box car I drive too .

Kingston is not the only supplier of buggy (cart for the Brit?) wheels.  I do remember seeing at least one supplier who could supply bearings to use 3/4 inch axle.  The wheel simply has a hole into which bearings are inserted.  I also suspect that some sort of brake such as a disc type is used on some of these carts which no doubt would allow for attaching a sprocket, certainly it would not be any harder then the modifications that have to be done to the Honda wheels.  It will take a bit of searching but they are there.  As for the 5/8 axle, these carts must be capable of supporting two passengers or about a max of 400 pounds plus the cart weight.  A trotting horse would do 10 mph or so.  All of this on unimproved ground.  Look at the pictures of the hub and you will see that there is plenty of room for a larger bearing hole.

The big plus is that these wheels have not had a lifetime of abuse and neglect, and then sitting for years in a junkyard.

Oryou could fix the rear wheels to the rear axle and put a sprocket on the axle.

Go with a live axle.

You would be driving both rear wheels

There has been much debate about this in terms of drivability.

The bigger issue to me on the spoked wheels is the 5/8 axle diameter.

Needs to be to take the standard Northern front hubs and rear axle.

Seems like you need to be strong enough for what we do.

Back to the wheel proposed in the initial posting in this thread:

http://www.kingston-saddlery.com/kss.asp?sel=product&id=C2167.WT&typ_id=60&

Can anyone explain to me what that last picture is of? The one that looks like
a 4-1/2" long threaded shaft with jam nuts on either end. Does that part slide
thru the bearing, and then those shaped washers squeezed down on the bearings
when you tighten the jam nuts? Is that how the bearings are held in the wheel?

Look down the list for the axle that goes with this wheel.  The illustration should make it clear.

OK, I am a little bit smarter now, maybe not smart enough.

This is the axle, I think:

http://www.kingston-saddlery.com/kss.asp?sel=product&id=C2167.AXLE&typ_id=60&cat\
=

So that little mini-axle shown in the wheel pics must go thru the hub of the
wheel, tighten down jam nuts on both sides. Then that whole assy slides onto
the end of the axle referenced above, and a nut at the end of the axle holds the
whole thing in place?

like a 4-1/2" long threaded shaft with jam nuts on either end. Does that part
slide thru the bearing, and then those shaped washers squeezed down on the
bearings when you tighten the jam nuts? Is that how the bearings are held in the
wheel?

do remember seeing at least one supplier who could supply bearings to use 3/4
inch axle. The wheel simply has a hole into which bearings are inserted. I also
suspect that some sort of brake such as a disc type is used on some of these
carts which no doubt would allow for attaching a sprocket, certainly it would
not be any harder then the modifications that have to be done to the Honda
wheels. It will take a bit of searching but they are there. As for the 5/8 axle,
these carts must be capable of supporting two passengers or about a max of 400
pounds plus the cart weight. A trotting horse would do 10 mph or so. All of this
on unimproved ground. Look at the pictures of the hub and you will see that
there is plenty of room for a larger bearing hole. The big plus is that these
wheels have not had a lifetime of abuse and neglect, and then sitting for years
in a junkyard. ----- Original Message ! -----From: Dave ArundelTo: cyclekart@:

Everyone asks me…”where do you drive your cyclekart?”

“Is it legal?”

My answer is….I drive it around my neighborhood on public streets.

No…it is not “legal.”

We live in a sleepy outer suburb.

The neighbors all wave at me.

The police have never stopped me.

If they did…what would they say?

I am 59 years old.

I am not terrorizing people or robbing a bank.

They would probably ask me nicely to not do it….

But I still would!

To that end…I guess I am a “libertarian.”

Minnesota has been called “the state where nothing is legal.”

I am not sure what harm is caused by driving a cyclekart on deserted streets!

Dave,
I am loving the wheel spinners you have on your car. I have some that I
fabricated myself on mine which are smaller than yours but not as nice. Would
you share how you mounted yours. I considered buying some similar to yours but
did not have a good idea on how to mount them.
Thanks

Hi…

I bought the spinners on ebay.

Do a search for “wheel  spinners”…..they aren’t hard to find.

The mount for the spinner is about a 2” wide circle of aluminum…with exterior threading.

We tack welded the mounts on the outsides of the wheel hubs.

In the case of the front wheels they fit nicely over the nuts that screw onto the axles.

Then….the spinners screw onto the mounts.

When you are screwed down…they have a set screw that holds them in place on the mount.

Really quite simple!

You need to get someone who knows how to weld aluminum to tack on the mounts.

Hope this helps!

Dave,
I am loving the wheel spinners you have on your car. I have some that I fabricated myself on mine which are smaller than yours but not as nice. Would you share how you mounted yours. I considered buying some similar to yours but did not have a good idea on how to mount them.
Thanks
Mike

Allen,

Really great video-clip!

Cute car, excellent road with nice surroundings, Spring atmosphere - what else for  great joy...

That was probably "neighbourhood road", closed for other traffic?

Enjoy guys...

RE: First Steps

Dave,

I'm new to cyclekarts and am interested in building a pre-war sprint style car...and a second zany one as well.  With these projects in mind, I look to start by meeting members, seeing a completed car and learning about preferred techniques that result in a quality built cyclekart.

In my past I spent spare time constructing '30s & '40s hot rods - still own a ground  up custom '46 Ford Woodie. Along the way I also dabbled with 'vehicle art' concepts for future development.

In doing research I came across your CycleKart web site, got excited, and have not looked back while viewing many other cyclekart sites since.

My objective now is to build an operative cyclekart frame and driveline over the next 6-8 weeks. The long lead items of; CT90 wheels, ATV2-30 and Honda GX200 are shown on Ebay. Buggy springs, etc. may delay this build schedule, but I am committed to getting a running chassis underway and completed soon.

I have started with a Parts List identifying all parts needed, known part numbers, vendor sources, and prices for a 'standard' model as outlined in the Cyclekart Specifications. My hand drawn sketches are underway to match the parts list and show any needed detail .

I know several parts are still missing from my list, especially kart parts - as I have no experience and may have missed the point on these items.

I truly would appreciate if someone knowledgeable can review this list, make corrections or recommend components to fill in gaps in my thinking.

I think a 'field trip' would be very helpful. Perhaps there is a member within 150 miles of Florida (Sarasota) or Massachusetts (Boston/Beverly) that I could visit to see their cyclekart and discuss construction techniques.

My last question for today is there a calendar of events with meets and chapter meetings available.

Yours in CycleKarting,

Larry Brown

Hi John…the grill came from a 1940’s vintage Farmall tractor.

I found it on ebay!

There are many on their today such as this one:

Description: Item image

They sandblast up nice and you can trim them to what size you want.

Do a search for “Farmall tractor grill” on ebay!

Hallo Members,
it seems that some hackers "stole identity" of some of our members and in their name continued to sent those stupid but possibly dangerous messages, mostly stared with "HAY"...

Very important: do not open attachments even messages got from known persons, and do not visit proposed web-sites - who knows what is behind all that. Just erase entire message!

I am not sure that there is use of changing password, because they managed to brake in our computers and steal our address book...
It seems to me that this happened to many similar groups, dedicated to small, micro and similar vehicles...
This morning I found almost 10 messages in my "DRAFT" folder ready to be sent in my name to various addresses, that I am nor wrote...

Be careful,

It isn't virus in my computer, neither spam from me - Somebody "stolen my e-mail identity" and send those garbage to all my addresses!
The same happened with many members of our Group midget-motto-classic, and some of other groups connected to small cars...

They vary slightly depending on how well they came out, but of the ones which are left, $40 - $45, plus, if I remember right $12 for shipping.  If you click the link, you'll see the prices.  They are priced a little higher than I had originally planned -- I had some input on the pricing, but did not have the final say.
