I've been to Meadowdale before (now known as Raceway Woods) and it's an
interesting place. A former racetrack closed for forty years, it's now a ribbon
of deteriorating asphalt cutting its way through a forest preserve.
Last weekend there was a car show on the old track, from where the Monza Wall
ended to halfway down the main straight. Featuring the Meister Brauser team
that called Meadowdale its home track back in the day, as well as a collection
of vintage race cars, it was one of the more interesting shows I've been to over
the years.
It may also be the last time rubber meets the original road, as there are rumors
of plans to repave parts of the track, not to return it to racing form (sorry!),
but to make it more friendly for those who want to bicycle or walk the park.

After reading through several interesting stories about the unique problems
drivers and commuters face in Africa, I decided I needed a way to group these
stories together somehow. So, here's the new Special Section: Automotive Africa!
The Voice of America writes good human interest stories, and I have several
linked to from the page.

La Biblioteca Automotriz Crittenden está ahora en español. Over 100 news
articles from Wikinoticias (the Spanish version of Wikinews) are now online,
bringing the total number of languages in the Library to three.

"The Italian Job" is now complete! The Crittenden Automotive Library is now
international! Over 200 articles from Wikinotizie (Wikinews in Italian) are now
online, dating from 2005 to last week, including a lot of Formula 1, MotoGP, and
stories from the roads of Italy!

OK, I've started another blog as a side project. Just another funny little
thing to keep me entertained when I'm tired of staring at raw code.
So maybe you've seen those pictures of stupid people or stupid things people
have done with the word FAIL superimposed on them? FailBlog.org is an excellent
place to find such pictures. Well, I decided to start something a little like
FailBlog but of course, focused entirely on wheeled transportation. My
creation? AutoFAIL, at http://autofail.blogspot.com Oh, and since it's all
about cars (and trucks and motorcycles) I'm tracking the failure by make, so you
can see all Ford fails or all Honda fails!
The picture at the top of the page is not only a car under a ton of bricks, it's
a YUGO under a ton of bricks.
Just uploaded are 87 photographs from the 1992 NASCAR tire test at Indy. It is
by 9 years the oldest major photo set in the Library. An up close and personal
look at some of the stars of NASCAR past. Thanks goes to John Walczak for
letting me post them.

The big finale is here! 174 more photographs conclude my collection of 2008
events. Just in time, too, since I'll be going to the Cedarville Model Car Show
in less than a week.
Anyway, notable in this group is the motorcycles. I didn't have very many
motorcycle photographs in the Library and I think this update went and doubled
it. If you count the little Cushman scooters, that is. Also notable is a rare
"Future Shark" modified Corvette, I've only been able to find ONE other photo of
it anywhere online. For the AMC fans, there's an interesting AMX drag car in
the mix.

I've posted photographs from another section of Meadowdale, this one
from the Huntley Road entrance up to the Monza Wall, along the Long
Straight to the cut-through to Len's Hairpin, then along the
Serpentine, Carl's Bend and Steffan's Straight (which isn't really
straight, go figure) and back to the Huntley Road parking lot.
The photos begin halfway down the page after my previous trip to the
track.

Four pages of photographs from last fall's car show in Lakemoor
benefiting the local Dollars for Scholars program are now online.
Notable in this update is an unusual Pontiac Sunbird, an AMC Rebel,
and a custom Lincoln Mark VII.

Only 1 more car show and a trip to Raceway Park (formerly Meadowdale
International Speedway) left in the bundle of 2008 photographs, then
it's on to other sources until the 2009 season begins.
The book Henry Ford's Own Story (as told to Rose Wilder Lane),
published in 1917, is now online. An interesting look into the life
of one of automotive history's most important figures and the company
he formed.
Available in PDF scan and plain text.

Well, in addition to completing a major overhaul of the site's
indexing system, I've added the first new photo set since the big
project started at the end of last year.
The nice thing about this photo set is that despite being spread
across all sorts of topics, it can also be found all grouped together
on its event page (25 photos per page, number of pages depends on
number of photos posted), a new feature of redoing the site. So now
you can go to
http://www.carsandracingstuff.com/library/indexphotography.php , click
on an event, and browse through all the photos from a particular show
on a few pages.

Yes, I'm still here.
It's been quiet lately, but I haven't been feeling well. It seems to
have passed a bit.
In the meantime, although I haven't been making major postings I've
been working on Formula 1 histories for every driver who's ever
participated in an event since FIA formed the series in 1950. It's a
lot of information, and I'm not quite halfway through, I'm to 1973.
I've had through 1955 on the site for some time, races and drivers and
season points, and I decided to finish the drivers as soon as I could
instead of leaving some driver histories half done. Many of the early
drivers in the series have been updated already, others have their
information in my master file awaiting creation of their page, and
still others haven't even been seen yet...there's 35 years of results
still to go through. But it's an ongoing process, and I likely won't
be posting every time new files are uploaded.
However, I had to take a break from all that open wheel stuff and add
an interesting chart I created from some information I found in an old
Mercedes-Benz history book. I have posted the original sales records
for what are supposedly all the M-B 300SLs sold in the UK. Which now
includes little flag icons, something I hope to spread around the site
further to add some more color to the site. But the records are at
the bottom of the 300SL page at
http://www.carsandracingstuff.com/library/3/300sl.php
Now that I'm feeling a bit better, in goes the Van Halen CD and off I
go to see how much of that Formula 1 history I can plow through tonight.
Well, this Update doesn't have a whole bunch of links, but I've
finally finished another pair of Formula 1 seasons, which takes the
full results and driver race histories through 1957.
There's also another whole bunch of articles online, now the Library
is up to 1,950.
I've been working on text because it doesn't involve a whole lot of
server space, which I'm rapidly running out of. But what I did post
with a little bit of the space I had left is a video on a problem with
the Shelby Mustang GT350H model kit...
http://www.carsandracingstuff.com/library/o/oelhafenfrank02.avi
Hopefully, that problem will be resolved well before the summer
photography season kicks into high gear, but right now I'm working on
remodeling "The Real Life Crittenden Library," also known as "My
Basement." I've got too much stuff and not enough room...not that I'm
going to sell off my stuff, I just need to figure out how to stuff it
into the space I have available.
The Ronnie Sox entry's 11 pictures refers to a Colt he drove, without
the famed "Sox & Martin" painted on the side, so I put it on his page.
But of course, I have 14 pictures of a Sox & Martin Plymouth to go
along with it, on the new Sox & Martin page.
I don't claim to know it all about cars, and this certainly has been
an educational experience learning about the old drag racers.
This is it on the pictures for a while. I've got a whole lot more
from the Mosley collection, and a ton of pictures and video from the
last C.A.R.S. in Miniature meeting, but I'm about out of space on my
web hosting plan. Nearly 4.5GB of information can now be found in the
Library. Not to worry, though, a new plan is coming soon and I'll
have all the space I need to grow the site well into the future.
Also, just because I'm done with pictures doesn't mean I'm taking time
off. It just means there's a lot more text coming, maybe another year
of F1 results, or some more articles.

Well, a quick add of a couple of photos from my camera of the inside
of my minivan turned into a big 26-photo update of the Chevrolet
Venture page.
Which makes this a good a time as any to remind folks of the mission
of The Crittenden Automotive Library: preserving automotive history.
Really, photos and (the real thing) of Chevrolet Corvettes can be
found anywhere, anytime. They'll be around for a long, long time.
But how many of us really drive around in Corvettes? You're more
likely to see minivans on the roads, minivans like the Chevrolet
Venture. Which is why it's worth preserving here, because even though
it's not cool at all, it's historically important and hardly anyone
else is doing it. So that's why it was "Chevy Minivan Day" here at
the Library.
By the way, I actually own a Chevrolet Venture myself. The dark blue
one with the license plate WALZAK4 in the pictures.
Okay, I know not a whole heck of a lot of people really care about
minivans. So there's 19 photos of a very unique Plymouth GTX that I
took Sunday. As well as 10 photos of the 1970 Chi-Town Hustler drag
car. I don't have a whole lot of drag racing on the site, so I went a
little nuts this weekend in a garage full of drag racing cars. More
of those photos to come later this week.
