The price that their asking for this model in 4000.00. The way I look
at it is, if the motor did go it would cost as much as the car to
replace it. Also, does anyone know of any good lexus mechanics in the
pgh. pa. area. The dealer costs are very high.

Hi Sportbike

Re. your message on the LS400 site.

I have owned a 91 model from new !!! and it has now covered some 175,000
without any major concerns.

The only major items that I have had to replace was the A/C compressor at
165,000 ( went to an aftermarket company that supplied and fitted the same item
as original fitment but at half the cost ) and both front disc rotors at
174,000 ( again I purchased items made by the same Japanese company that
supplies the originals to Toyota but at less than 50% of Lexus retail )

I have a friend whose LS400 has covered 290,000 without ANY PROBLEMS.

It seems to me that the only item to keep an eye on is the timing belts, these
must be replaced every 50,000 ( if you don`t want a complete engine tear down !

Regards

Peter Rogers

what are they asking? Is it highway or city miles? Is it in good shape? I
bought my 91 3 1/2 years ago with 120,000, i now have 162,000. I had to replace
the a/c, timing belt, water pump, all which was about $3,000---but, the car runs
like a new one--no car has any guarantees, but if it's taken care of, it's
probably worth it, considering what a new one costs--and my mechanic who works
on all imports only, said toyota and honda were the best--as far as import
products
I've owned vw's, audi, nissan, honda, and now i have the lexus and a camry--and
like them both very much--incidentally, my mechanic has worked on lexus' with
well over 300,000 miles with little problems....

Hello all,

I am new here and new at owning a Lexus. We just bought a 1992 LS400 from a
friend of ours. To buy it and put it on the road it only cost us $5000 CDN. I
love the car, it's great. Where we live, (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada) there
are only about 11 Lexus'. Does anyone know of any problems that this year of car
has?
Hope to get to know everyone,

Treasure

My car is dropping coolant. I took it to the local shop thinking it
may be the water pump. All of a sudden the temp. guage shot up and
emptied all the coolant. The guy filled it up, it held the fluid,
drove it to the shop and let it idle for 20 minutes, took it out on
the road (about 8 miles) drove it back to my house, and all of a
sudden it dropped the fluid again. Repeated the same procedure as
before, and it's holding the fluid again. What's wrong? I hate to
take it out on the road for a drive thinking it may repeat. What
should be checked? Is it the water pump, censor, or something to do
with the A/C? Thanks

For those years there is a switch in the trunk that
turns off the air suspension system in models so
equipped. It needs to be turned off before the car is
   lifted otherwise damage will occur.

May I suggest E Bay for owners or shop manuals.

Does anyone know if any company makes or maked a rear boot / trunk
spoiler for my 91 LS400 ?

Mine currently runs on 18" Alloys with up-rated shocks, custom
stainless exhaust system ( no cat ) etc. and a spoiler would just
about complete the transformation.

Just an idea.

If you are going to spend that much money and are willing to be a
guinea pig, why not try Iridium spark plugs ? You can get one for
about $8-$10 on eBay, online store like http://www.sparkplugs.com or
at some auto parts stores.

The Iridium plugs are SUPPOSED to last longer than platinum but have
even less electrical resistance than regular copper plugs (platinum
has even higher resistance than copper)

I'm too new to know any details, but I trust Toyota/Lexus very
well. Ever heard the expression "at 100kmiles, a Toyota just
finished the engine break-in period" ? :)

I only trust synthetic oil so that's what will be going into the
car. Right now it runs Mobil1 synthetic blend (for 1000 miles) so I
can clean out the inside of the engine before pouring in rather
expensive synthetic oil (plan is either Amsoil High Performance
Synthetic or Mobil1 Synthetic). For oil filter, it got Purolator
Pure One for now and next oil change, I'm going to see if Mobil1 has
their synthetic oil filter for these cars.

As far as gasoline, I'm pretty sure the owner's manual recommend to
use premium as in 91/92/93 octane gas. I believe you can use lower
octane (not necessarily lower grade !) at the cost of retarded
timing and thus less engine output. The ECU/ECM should be able to
tackle this. My favorite is Shell gasoline.

Your welcome :)

All,

New to this list. I just bought a '95 LS400. Indigo blue
metallic/titanium gray two-tone with charcoal interior. I'm loving
it. I'm looking to modify this sleeping beast and I'm already on
the look out for JIC coilover suspension, JIC exhaust, headers
(anyone got any lead for a pair that fit LS400 and don't cost
$1000 ?), intake and likely ported heads. I'm going to refrain from
going twinturbo (twin Garrett T28s sound so good) for now, although
500hp sounds damn tempting.

The car now sports K&N replacement air filter (E-2606)and some Home
Depot smooth-bore, $5 hose to replace the accordion one right behind
the MAS. Other than those, the car is bone stock. Currently shod
with Dunlop Graspic HS-2 (dedicated snow tires) in 215/60/16 size to
tackle Ohio winter. 18x9 Konig Villains are waiting in the garage,
just have to find 255/40/18 tires to fit those come spring.

I think that's enough intro :)

Hi guys, I'm new here. I just purchased a 1991 LS400 with 72000
miles on it (first owner car). Love the car and it's the most
comfortable, luxurious car I've ever owned. However, I don't know
weather all of you experince this with your first genenration lexuses
or is it just me. Ok, this is what happens: when I first take off
from a complete stop, as the RPM needle reaches around 1200-1300
there is a slight hesitation (split second) and once past that it
runs normally throughout the rest of the drive. Again, it happens
only when I'm accelerating from a complete stop and only when RPM is
1200-1300. If any of you have experinced this, please let me know
wheather that's the way it's supposed to be or is there something
wrong. Thank you.

I am buying a 1995 LS400 with 95,000 miles for $17,000. I have
always loved the "second generation" body and I have driven the
car and it seems to run very well and everything in the car works.
My questions are:

1) Any '95 LS400 owners out there with any tips or
advice on things I should be aware of, such as maintenance items or
problems you may have encountered with your vehicle at this mileage
or higher mileage? Possibly any recalls or anything you've run into
that might be of interest to me!

2) I'm in the San Francisco Bay
Area, specifically Antioch (east of Walnut Creek, if you are familiar
with the area). Can any of you advise me on independent shops (short
of dealer maintenance, which I've heard is excellent but very
expensive) in the area that will provide quality service that you can
truly recommend.

3) What brands of oil and gasoline seem to work
best for your '95 LS400. I've always bought the cheapest gas in my
previous vehicles, but I want to keep this vehicle for a while.
Sorry about the long post but I will be very appreciative of any
feedback.

Thank you!
