I don't know much about 9000's with ABS but you could check out the ABS
accumulator and see if that has a problem. My 1990 9000 carlsson has ABS
but so far it's given no problems.

I have owned 2 saabs and one was a 9000. It is a common thing. Try a simple
thing and pull the fuses for the ABS. If this resolves your issue worst case
scenario is to ride around like the olden days and drive with brakes where you
have to push them.
I would bleed the brakes the old fashioned way. And disable the ABS.
Thanks to you all for writing. I guess I've reached a point where believing in
what a mechanic is capable of I don't question anymore. I've got to stop this.
I took the car to a mechanic who's an hour's drive away (he's worked on my
9000's before) and the only thing he could come up with was the brake lines just
hadn't been properly bled (if air is trapped, it expands from getting warmer
(summer) forcing the calipers to bind up).
But as an example of what kind of mechanic he is as opposed to the ones who
weren't listening to me (the ones who didn't seem to think they needed to bleed
the system after installing an accumulator), I asked that he bleed the 9000 ABS
system the way SAAB says to bleed (brke fluid pump off for the front, pump on
for the rear). At first he found an alternative but then he double-checked by
looking in this big old black book and found what SAAB says to do. They did it,
my calipers are no longer binding.
I have a '91 9000 non-turbo 2.3. Replaced all calipers and caliper hoses. All
wheels still hot even after coasting to a halt on a flat plane with minimal
braking. Is this the master cylinder (which of course is attached to the
reservoir AND the pump)? I'm losing my wits here because this car is turning
into a money pit. Thanks for any help.
Hi Craig
Yeah, apparently the 1990+ models had a different design to the older models so
unfortunately they don't fit on my model.
Will try Steve and see if he has any, but from Saab Serve's experience all the
second hand ones are cracked too! Looks like I might just have to fork out the
cash.

Sorry to hear about that. I've heard that particular years were worse for
tank flaws than others.

You could try talking to Steve out at Saab Salvage in Riverstone. He used
to own Saab Serve and now just does wrecking/salvage of Saab's and will
soon be selling a few used ones as well. 02-9627-6834 is his number.
He probably has plenty of good used tanks. I have a couple here too though
they're from a couple of 1983 build-year 900's and might not be correct
for the later year cars with the different fuel pump arrangement.
I believe it is possible to repair the plastic, but it might be difficult
given that it'd be laced with lots of petrol molecules. There are chemical
solvents around that are used to repair things like the plastic headlight
casings so the fuel tank plastic is probably quite repairable with the
right materials on hand though it might be cost-effective just to replace
the tank.

Hi
I have a 1990 900i with a cracked plastic tank. Apparently a flaw of the 1990+
models. Constant fuel smell when driving is horrid, although with the windows
closed, no smell. Saab Serve told me the tank was cracked.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it a good idea to get it plastic
welded or is it simply best to shell out for a new one? ($1,600) Does anyone
know a really talented plastic welder in the Sydney area?!
Any advice would be great!
Thanks
If your smelling gas, get it to a mechanic who works on SAABs and have your fuel
lines checked. I only found my gas gap purchase to have any validity after I had
my fuel lines fixed.
Good info: I was wondering, I used to always hear a vaccuum sound when loosening
the gas cap after driving my 9000 Turbo... But it hasn't done this for quite
some time. I think I have a small leak near the top of the gas tank and filler
tube (it never leaks gas, but if I crack the front window while driving, I get a
hint of gass fumes) I've heard this can be a common problem with a few different
model SAAB's (Can anyone identify with this?- My brother had the same problem
with his 2000 95 Turbo and attempted to seal it with epoxy resin- he says it's
much better but not 100%) At any rate, my orginal gas cap doesn't seem to lock
very tight before auto-tourque starts slipping. Do you think there would be any
benefit in getting a new gas cap if there is already an air leak in my fuel
storage system?? (also car doesn't idle well when it's cold but seems better
when engine is warm- Does anyone think there is a relationship here or just a
vacuum leak somewhere on the motor?)
Thanks in advance,
-JL

As long as it's not very much, I wouldn't say it's a problem.

Shouldn't be driving at all w/ a blown turbo. The engine was designed to operate
with a fully functioning turbo.

I recently found my self stuck 100 miles from my home with a failed clutch master cylinder. i was able to get home by adding brake fluid to the clutch fluid, this tightened the seals and i made it home. curious if anyone has change their clutch master cylinder on a 1992 9000, how hard was it, how do you bleed the fluid and do you recomend doing a rebuild kit or a new cylinder.
the turbo on my 92 9000 has trouble spooling fully i replaced the waste gate with a used one with 100,000 miles on it (mine had 235,000) the problem is still there however it seems to have improved a little. i have made it so that the wastegate will open as little as possible. if i need to i have a used turbo i can swap out.

They'd be the 16" 4 x 108 PCD 'Super-Aero' wheels that you're after. There
was a set on Ebay recently for about A$800 including tyres. Not sure what
they ended up selling for. I've seen a few sets appears on Ebay in the US
over the last few months but they're very popular wheels so in a larger
market they're probably selling quite quickly.

Sounds quite likely as the system probably inhibits boost to limit
possible engine damage, etc. that might be caused when the car is running
in a 'restricted' state.
