Re: [Chevy Volt] Developement of the Volt makes the Bail Out a necessity.

Nationalized health care is not the answer.

The nationalizing it  you get efficiency of a Soviet Union Bread Line with the compassion of the IRS.

One of the few growth industries in Michigan is Canadians coming over and getting their bodies fixed with access to procedures that their nationalized systems truncate. For example, hip and knee replacements, just to name a few.....

Ask any seniors in FLA who are the highest number of transplants; Brits and Canadians, my guess it is not just the weather but the access to health care. Talk to Auto Engrs who actually travel, horrible teeth in Britian and even in Japan with their somewhat nationalized system braces for your teeth and taking care of leg alignment issues are not covered.

Go to "Reason" Magazine and read the article on how expensive the Medical Coverage is in Japan for auto-workers.

3rd party payer is the problem. Our modern system came from Kaiser Steel and it cost them so much during WWII they then came up with the HMO.

The Fixes ( IMHO )?
  • Change access by portability of plans which would eliminate "Cobra" so you could take it with you.
  • Change tax policy so that businesses do not get the break but individuals do and you are then responsible to take advantage of it. Right now businesses and small businesses get 100% deductiblity, anyone outside those bounds do not get it, this would open it up to everyone.
  • Ge rid of state boundaries for insurance bases in states, this really drives up their cost, a menu for you to choose from from a host of providers would be a marketplace based on competition.
  • MSA type plans with Flexible Savings Accounts for deductibles would be a cost effective model
  • Checkups for lower rates are already part of big-3 plans not a bad idea to make available for dovetail on the ideas above, other health prevention venues should be considered as well.

So much of this takes thinking and making choices. sadly, that is becoming a rare commodity in the U.S.

You can fix union medical by implementing a national healthcare system in
this country. I'm not sure why automobile manufacturers haven't supported a
national system in the past! Ford Motor has cited healthcare as its #1
expense; it only makes sense that these big companies should have been
supporting national healthcare all along.
