Description

I want a Chevy Volt! If you want one too, this is the goup for you!

This is the place to learn about the Volt, discuss the Volt, share rumors about the Volt, and show GM how much demand there is for the Volt!

The Chevy Volt seems like such an obvious idea: Most people don’t have extremely long commutes, but occasionally they take longer trips. So why not create an electric car that can recharge itself with an onboard gasoline-powered generator? If you’re just cruising around town, less than 40 miles, you never need the gas engine. But if you’ve got a longer trip, the gas motor fires up to charge the batteries. If you live within 20 miles of your job, you effectively commute in an electric car. And if you live somewhere beyond the reach of the batteries (or, say, want to go on a ski trip or something), you still get a minimum of 50 miles per gallon. G.M. says the 2011 Volt will be available in the Fall of 2010.

What makes it tick? A small three-cylinder gas engine drives only a 53-kilowatt generator — it is not connected to the wheels at all. The charge is stored in a long T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack that runs down the middle of the car. A 160-horsepower electric motor moves the front-wheel-drive Volt, giving 0-60 acceleration of 8.5 seconds and a theoretical range of 640 miles. The car can also be plugged in to a standard wall outlet for a 6.5 hour recharge.

The big financial bailout bill passed 10/3/08 included a tax credit for buyers of plug-in electric vehicles and provides a base of $2,500 plus an additional $417 per kwh for batteries greater than 4 kwh. For the Chevy Volt, that works out to $7,500 per car. So the estimated $40,000 sticker price drops to around $32,500.

I'm ready to buy one today!
