Me personally, I'd spend the money on swapping in a larger engine. It would last a lot longer. The 2.8L crankshaft has a hard enough time staying together...

i would go ahead and start it with the oil that's in it. DO NOT drive it with that oil!!! run it only long enough to get it good and hot then change it...

That IS odd. I've never rebuilt any of the GM manual trannies. The only thing I can think of is the gears must have SOME sort of "play" or "slack" in them...
