The proper way to check and recharge the A/C system…
There is a proper way to recharge the A/C system that most do not know about.
First and foremost if you have to recharge a system then there must be a
problem. A leak is the most likely reason. Other things concern me about someone
coming to your house to "recharge" your A/C system where do they fit the
recovery system? That machine is rather large and costly to be hauling around in
a truck or van.
So here are the steps that should be followed in servicing your A/C system.
1. check the pressure in the system
2. If the pressure is low recover the refrigerant and vacuum the system down to
-30 lbs.
3. Put dye in the system and start the vech. Bring to proper pressure. (There is
a table that takes in account of air temp and what the pressure should be) if
you over pressurize then system damage could occur.
4. Look for leaks with a UV light and special glasses.
5. Check the cabin air outlet and the cabin air filter.
The air in the center duct should be at 38°F when properly serviced. The
operation of the blend door and the expansion valve should be checked at this
point.
6. There are some things I do that I take for a given that I just do not think
about while I service the system. Like watching the operation of the compressor
and listening to the car. Things I can not explain to the average person.
7. Do not just add to the A/C system even with the R134 refrigerant damage to
our environment can occur. Repair your system properly and it should serve you
well for some time to come.
There is more to just adding to your system and more problems can occur if you
do not take you're A/C to someone who is qualified to service your system. Money
is tight all around you're A/C system should be tight as well. Evaporators
spring leaks and front seals in compressors go bad. But most of the time these
happen by adding too much pressure to the system. More than 200lbs of pressure
is just too high for the system to hold! I had many come in lately at 250 or
even higher. The compressor can not do its job and will make noise or even lock
up!! Some repairs can cost you money not save you money. This is one of those
jobs.
So if you do not bring it to my shop please bring it to a shop that will back up
the repair work!
Thank You for reading this pass it on to your friends.

Subject: [carfanatics] Help 97 Pontiac Trans Sport Cruise control
Did some engine work and now my cruise control wont work its stuck and causes my idle to run high. I disconnected it from the throttle but want it back. Does anyone know whats wrong and how to fix it or do i have to replace it. It worked fine till the engine work.
Ken I remember back about 4 years ago doing the heads on a Lumina MPV and if I
remember right. The directions from Alldata said to clamp the cruise line so it
wouldn't slip back into its sheathing. Am I thinking of the right vehicle or am
I thinking of another vehicle? Could that possibly be the problem here?

OK here is the news on the Reatta. First trying to find a service manual for
this car is difficult at best without having to spend $100+ dollars on one.
Second now the car is stalling and the code is reading 34 not 33.
Any ideas this is the one area I do not do well in.

Warren, Michigan, is north and east of center of Detroit and is
Michigan's third largest city. GM has its Warren Technical Center there
where much of GMs design effort takes place. Warren and Detroit recently
got into a tiff when the Warren mayor urged GM to move its headquarters
from Detroit's Renaissance Center to Warren's Tech Center. With all the
downsizings there is plenty of space. The Warren mayor has held rallies
and prohibited his appointees from buying foreign-made cars. I can see
someone arguing that a US made Toyota is more an American made car than
a Mexican made Chevy suburban. Warren's official unemployment rate is
around 18%, one of the country's highest. GM also has a transmission
plant in Warren.
Chrysler has the Warren truck Plant and the adjacent Warren Stamping
plant. Warren Truck assembles some Dakotas and Rams. Some Rams are
assembled in Mexico.
North of Warren is Sterling Heights, Michigan's fourth largest city. The
Chrysler Sterling Heights Assembly Plant and Sterling Heights Stamping
plants are there. SHAP, as it was known in DC days, is on the list to be
closed in 2010. SHAP makes a Sebring. Sterling Heights officials are
begging Fiat to keep SHAP open.
One in four workers in Warren and Sterling Heights has an auto-related
job. Ford has the Van Dyke transmission plant in Sterling Heights also.

Right now CNH, a major player in the world tractor market, produces the CaseIH
and New Holland lines of agricultural equipment. CNH
is owned by Fiat. The Obama administration is giving Fiat 20% ownership in
Chrysler and apparent total control. The rationale is
that Fiat has some mysterious engine technology. If I remember correctly, this
was due to some variable valve timing technology.
I was talking to a guy who retired from Chrysler over 20 years ago with 45 years
there. His opinion is that the Fiat takeover of
Chrysler will result in both going belly up when the billions in Federal money
being "lent" to Chrysler stop.
In the 82-83 recession, GM sold Terex to IBH, a European company. IBH went
bankrupt and Terex shut down its US plants. A Terex brand
eventually reappeared but it is almost an entirely different company. Could this
happen to CNH?
The New Holland brand includes what used to be Ford Tractor. This merger is
going to link Chrysler with the remains of Ford Tractor.

For every failure there is a cause!
For every failure there is a cause, whether it is age, mileage, or an accident.
(Note I left out bad repairs)
There is a book in your car that gives you most of the maintenance schedules
and the rest can be found in the repair manuals you can buy from your local
parts store. Doing this kind of work can allow you to enjoy your ride longer.
Abuse like burnouts and racing is hard on your car. So treat it well after all
I know we all love our cars and it becomes lifelike to some of us. When our car
goes down life is interrupted to a point that we all hate! And the expense to
fix it is…
Some of us repair cars and never look for the cause. To me that is a bad
repair! To know what is going on with your car I need as much information as
possible so I will ask questions and listen.
To say my car has a rattle or a clunk is not enough for me I will drive it with
you and you show me what noise we will address. If I hear something you do not
at first I will point it out and then we can decide on a cure for your pride and
joy.
A car is more than just a car to some and I understand this! So bring it to me
and I will show it the care and understanding it needs.

Chrysler's first production electric car will be a 268-horsepower, two-seat sports car, likely one that's similar to the Dodge Circuit concept--assuming that the automaker survives long enough to build it, Read more at http://autoblitz.blogspot.com/
Looking at used cars.
Here where I am at in St Louis Mo people have the need to replace their car from
time to time. So here are some tips for you to think about.
I do not know about your state laws or the inspection and what they look at. So
this is a small list of things you need to look at or have someone look at for
you.
1: tires look for the dot numbers on the tire as well as how much tread is
left. The numbers should read like this 4806 this is what this number means 48
is the day the tire was made and 06 is the year.
2: brakes have the rotors measured for run out as well as thickness. Pads and
shoes for thickness. Operation, do you feel any vibration when the brake is
applied? How does the pedal feel?
3: suspension parts, bushings, links, tie rod ends, drag links. Is the steering
wheel straight? Does it shake at any point? If it shakes at say 50 or 60 mph
this might mean the tires are out of balance.
How much does it dip or roll when braking or cornering? Check the struts or
shocks.
4: how does the engine run? Does it hesitate or stumble? Check the oil and
antifreeze are they clean? How about the hoses are they hard or sponge like?
Check the air filter and fuel filter.
5: Check the lights and switches. Along with this have the battery checked out
along with a starter draw test.
6: check the interior of the car burn marks dirty or stained carpet are good
signs the car was not taken care of!
7: Check the outside of the car flaking paint dull paint. Crunch marks can bee
seen if you look down the side of the car. Carfax.com is a good site to go to
but remember they are only as good as the information they receive from the
shops and insurance companies. So some things could get left out that you would
need to catch.
8: Door and trunk operation, binding or creaking doors or trunk lids are not
hard to fix but check the doors for drooping or bad hinges. Does the door stay
open? How about the trunk lid does it stay open and close easy?
One of my pet peeves are hoods with the struts holding them up and them not
doing so. (Ouch my head!)
This is just a short and incomplete list but should help you check out a car or
truck a bit better.
Here in MO we have a safety inspection in which I think should be rewritten and
a new guide passed by our state senate brake pads will pass when they are at
2/32 of an inch to me this is way to thin and within a week could be metal to
metal. The brakes have squealers installed which hit at 3/32! Manufactures of
pads say when you hear a noise have them checked out and do not wait.
I also do not agree with the ABS system on your brakes not working and that
would pass safety inspection.
Tires that are bald but do not have cord showing passes safety? I do not
understand how they can call this a safety inspection. We all know how bald
tires react in rain covered streets let alone if it snows!!!
When I went and took the safety test (yes I passed)
I asked questions and the major response was it became my job to inform the
people of the condition of their car. I had to let people drive off with bad
brakes and bad tires! And yes the inspectors at our shop like many others passed
cars that to me were still not up to par! But I can only do what I can do and
have to go by the laws of the state.
By all means check the laws in your state and if you think they should be
changed then write your senator and see what you can do.
Lets all drive safe and pay close attention to what we are doing and what we are
buying.
Thanks

Hi! As I am sure you already know....you have to be careful about taking the car
into the dealership AFTER the warranty runs out. They will charge you a lot more
for the repairs than your trusty auto mech will.
For instance the left power windows on my Chev pickup went bad and the
dealership charged me $458.00 to replace the track and motor. Later, the right
one did the same and my local trusty mech did that same job for only $169.00.
