Hood release cable broke   Message List

Re: Hood release cable broke

the tool is very odd looking. it looks like a twisted bent over hook-like tool.
its impossible to describe. The first time can be a challenge. the tool itself
is cheap. making something is easy if you are creative and have reference to
another vette to see where to make bends and where to make it hook. Doing the
actual opening manuver is the tricky part. its hard. just this side of
impossible. I have done it several times, and in fact using my safety wires not
because one side of my release is out of adjustment and won;t release the
locks...
Thank God for those little wires hidden around the rubber seal.

anyway, if you are exceptionally gifted and lucky, go for it. its not worth
trying unless you have the reference and some skills at such things. its awkward
and even with the tool, it can take all day. The tool was invented 5 years after
the problem was discovered.
I have done it in 10 minutes, other times took hours. Perhaps you would want a
shop to do the first time so you could watch and learn? some will make
house-calls.
To do this yourself, you MUST study the latch and how it operates, see where to
get up to it, and how you would have to operate the tool. Its a waste of time in
my opinion to try to describe the workings of this simple one piece tool. a
stiff piece of #9 wire can be used, or something similar. it has to be stiff,
able to be bent, and stiff enough to hook and pull the lever when you get a
piece of it. practicing with another vette is advisable.

put a safty cable to both hood reseases. Was going to get that done but have
not. So today I wanted to take the vette for a ride and battery was down,
pulled the hood release and only one side released.

exactly. Maybe measurements, and witch way you turn it. I see Ecklers sells
one, but would rather get it open with out buying one.
