Re: 1946 B31 6 spring clutch

the six spring...not really much to ,m..... there really only is what is in
the parts book... getting all the parts into it...
getting it to actually work...now that is a challenge...

i set mine with a dial guage and magnetic base...there is enough room just
behind the engine sprocket to set the magnet base on...and then...pull in the
clutch, start pedaling and adjusting the nuts... takes me about 15 minutes of
steady work to get down to 10 thou runout...cant get much better than that as
the basket generally has that much wobble...
i leave the locking nuts off and use a nut driver...i have knocked out all my
spring studs and replaced with 1/4 inch fine thread studs...
using the dial guage is the only way i can get my clutch to work...any more
than 30 thou runout......and either slips...or drags......
i have got new springs from the local building supply and as they were
longer...turned 6 new spring cups...
the old cork clutch burned out last week... could only get 2 of the 4 i
needed...what to do??? found myself looking at my cork pinboard...
well...go get the frypan flipper...off came the sheet... out with the buck
knife...couple hours later...had all new corkys fitted and sanded flush... 300
k,s now...and no adjustment...works very well...i have heard that composite cork
doesnt work.....but so far seems fine... and i only use the 350 number of plates
in my clutch...for a 500...
my six spring works very well...thats in big city traffic...30 and better
degrees...
to get the chaincase to hold oil... i cut a bit melamine kitchen (5/8s)
cabinet wood neat to fit inside on the gasket surfaces...silly con both sides of
the metal... run a few screws thru to tighten up both sides neatly...let
dry...pop off the board...wallah...and then you have 2 flat mating
surfaces...bit of vaseline or?? on the melamine surfaces to make sure doesn,t
stick... silly con the cork gasket (just cut out of sheet rubber cork) to the
outer...mine holds oil very well...

Thanks, I'm hoping to attack it at the weekend. I'd wondered about how oiltight I'd be able to get it. The previous owner had presumably not managed because...

The dial gauge and stand will be of great use. Ten thou runout can be bettered, but it'll do well enough. As for myself, I put a plunger mainshaft and a Norton...
