Subject: AMC 290 and 304 heads - HELP!!!

HI!

I have a 1968 290 engine. The problem I have found is that I can't
get exhaust headers for it that fit in a CJ, 290 has square ports.
The 290 wasn't in the CJ, only the cars like the Javelin. Don't want
to special order them. I also have an 81 304, just sitting here. I
know the deck heights are different. I need to know if I can just
trade the heads from a 304 and put it on the 290. I also know that I
need to make sleeves for the head bolts from 1/2 to 7/16. From what
I have found, which is very little, I need to keep the 290 intake.
What I need to know is there anything else that needs changing?? Do I
need to change the Push Tubes? I can't find anything and everyone I
call says they don't know either.

I would appreciate any help!!!

Thanks,

Sally

I recently had my passenger seat belt removed from my 85 CJ7. They
were kind enough to leave the bolts, and buckle by the console. If
anyone has a Shoulder belt they could spare I will buy or trade for
it. Thanks, Pete pjbaumeister@chs,okstate.edu

Does any one out there know what the hell that bundle of wires that
goes through the passenger side fire wall is for on a 83 CJ-5? Is it
important stuff or can I hack it out while doing a motor swap? I am
putting in a 4.3L Vortec and am looking to clean up under the hood
and that hole would be perfect to run my wiring harness for my "brain
box" through. I just got done hacking out the emission test port
wires that used to reside on the pass fender and would really like to
take a set of wire cutters to that other bundle running to
that "magic box" up in the heater ducting behind the dash. What can
I do away with and what do I need? I have been pulling my hair out
looking through my books and it isn't telling me and those diagrams
are all greek to me. All help is much appreciated in advance, and
keep on Jeepin!!!

With summer almost behind us its time to talk Jeep!

Since the merging of YahooClubs into YahooGroups several months ago, we've
noticed that there are several hundred Jeep lists with little or no
activity.

So if you receive this message on a list that is fairly inactive, please
read
on.

We'd like to invite you to join the JEEP list. The JEEP list is the largest,
most active general and non-regional JEEP list on the YahooGroups system.
Over 1200 members and 10-20 messages a day on all aspects of Jeeping and all
models of Jeeps.

On road, off road, the JEEP list has it covered.

You can subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:

Or, subscribe by going to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jeep/

Oh, here is a brief description of the JEEP list:

Jeep is for discussion of Jeeps (TJ, YJ, CJ, XJ, ZJ, WJ, MB, SJ, DJ,
Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Comanche, Scrambler, Commando, Jeepster,
Liberty, Wagoneer), their performance, and uses. A forum to discuss
accessories, enhancements, and modifications. Feel free to post tales of
your Jeep adventures. Postings of Jeep related events are also welcome.
Recommendations (or criticisms) of products are encouraged. Brief
announcements, by manufacturers or others, of new products and/or
accessories are allowed.

P.S. If by accident this went to an active list, our apologies. If the list
you are subscribed to is giving you what you need, by all means stay with
it. If not, c'mon over to the JEEP list at jeep-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Has anyone out there done an automatic swap into a CJ5? A 4 speed
overdrive? I have seen one but lost touch with the person. He was in
the San Bernardino, CA area. Also one of the off road mags featured a swap
but it was a th350 3 speed deal and I've misplaced the mag. Any help would
be appreciated. Also I'm running a 4.5 inch suspension lift.

It's not quite as easy as some of the write ups make it out to be but if
you have a horizontal band saw, welder, a big press, and an angle finder
you can do it yourself if you know how to use them. I've only done a
front that was from a J10 and it went under my 69 CJ so both sides
needed cut... I think Cherokee axles will too as they would be wide
track if you want to go down to close to stock width. I have somewhat of
a write up on my axle here-

Took some pics while I was checking to see how everything cleared...
other than the inside of the rear fender wells rubbing at full flex, the
tie rod just bumping the pittman arm when flexxed and cranked as far as
it will go to the left, and the caliper hitting the shock in that same
position... it all works really well. I can live with those 3 things
till I can make some minor position adjustments. Check it out here -
http://members.aol.com/realoldjeep/newpics2.html Now I need to round up
a few Jeeps to go along out and test it out this weekend.. everyone
keeps talking about it being a holiday weekend and can't go.. Geesh (-:

I am selling my Jeep, it's killing me, but I need to buy a truck, so
here we go. It is a 1976 CJ-5, 258 engine, with I body and frame that
is original and in better condition than most...has a lift on it, 4
inches, I believe. Has a Bestop, bikini top, carb, and distributor,
all are less than a year old. I always have garaged it, as did the
previous owner (maybe that's why it doesn't have much rust to it)I
also put in highback bucket seats in it last summer, but still have
the orinal lowback seats and backseat bench that will go with the
Jeep. Also has newer windsheild. This Jeep is a workhorse, as I know
the previous owner used her for hunting. I live in Saint Louis
Missouri and I am asking $2500 or best offer. If you would care to
inquire about this Jeep, please e-mail me at tommybugman@....

I have a pair of axles for sale that would be a great axle upgrade
for YJ or CJ(with different t-case). I have a HIGH PINION 44 front
with diff on driver's side. The housing is bare of all perches and
shock mounts and ready to put on new spring pads for leafs or mounts
for four link setup with coils. The axle has axle shafts (297
joint),spindles, knuckles, rotors(may need turning or replaced)
calipers, and locking hubs with 5 on 5 1/2 lug pattern
(ford,cj,dodge, and scout pattern). It is a full width axle that
measures roughly 55 inches across the upper ball joints. The REAR
axle is a Dana 60 semi-floating with the same 5 on 5 1/2 pattern as
the 44. It is complete drum to drum with all brake hardware except e-
brake cables and brake lines(may need new drums and shoes). Axle
measures 59 inches from axle flange to axle flange(not outside of
drum to outside of drum). Both axles currently have 3.54 gears and
are open diffs. I will sell both axles AS IS for $900 total. If
interested, I can install your choice of gear ratio, choice of
locker, all new bearings and seals, and all new brake parts for cost
of parts plus $250 labor. Email me at trentcj5@... if interested
or have any questions. I am located in Asheville, NC and would prefer
to have axles picked up here or can deliver up to 100 miles.

Thanks, Danny

Go to your local parts store, and take a gander through their MOOG
CHASSIS book. They make some kind of provision for adjusting damn
near anything involved with alignments. There is usually a
camber/caster sleeve, or some kind of offset ball joint that will
help you correct the problem. You must, however, know what angles
you're dealing with NOW, so that you can determine the amount of
correction that you need.

Hey, thanks for the info, but I am running fuel

Then I found a wiring harness through Howell efi that
only requires like 3 wires (ignition, ground, and
power to the fuel pump). Thanks again, and keep on

LMAO...... I think you offended 97.3% of the CJ
owners in America by mentioning subwoofers and gas
milage. Maybe a nice Geo Metro would be better, and when
you care more about rock climbing, gumbo-mudding, and
dodging trees on two-tracks, THEN you can buy a Jeep.
(people who buy trucks and other toys expecting MPG
should be sent back to Russia) Regardless, good luck
with your search for info.

The easiest (and simplest) way to do it is to use
the carb and distributor from older motors, before
electronic controls. Chevys are easy to wire, because if you
wire up the starter, and supply 12v to the coil power
lead, it will run! If you're using the TH350 trans,
you're in luck too, because all they need is manifold
vacuum, and a half-ass adjusted TV cable to work well.
Either way, I recommend wiring the beast as simply as
possible, especially if you are building this for a toy.
Last time I put a small block GM in something, the
only wires going to the engine were coil power, choke
power, alternator power, and coolant temp sensor wire.
If you keep it simple like that, its SO much easier
to keep up, and simpler to fix should it
break!

PB

You want to hear that it will be fine to leave it
as it is, right?!
Well, depending on the
condition of your shackles and leafs, you might be
alright......
If your set-up is stock (i.e. stock tub lift and
shackles) you might want to look at the difference in the
angle of the drive shafts. The larger increase in that
angle will lead to faster failure of your tranny and
gears. Remember, you will have much more rubber (tire
area) to move using the same exact equipment you
previously used to move much smaller tires.
Stress (ie.
torque) kills equipment fast and kills it dead.
Not
knowing your Jeep's exact condition, it may be possible
that you can get away safely with the 35"s if you are
not putting any additional adverse stress on the
tranny or leafs.

That's my quick 2 cents.

Well the other two motors I wanted to stuff into
my 83 CJ-5 were going to be a major pain in the ass
so I am going with the "proven" easier, cheaper, and
lighter 4.3L Vortec. I have allready found all the tranny
and motor mount adapters from Advanced Adapters but
need info on the wiring of the transplant. I have read
lots of articles on people stuffing 4.3Ls in CJ's and
they always talk about the tranny and motor mount
adapters but no one ever seems to tell how they wired it
in. Is it a secret, or black magic, or just maby
there is someone out there that makes a harnes that
will just plug almost everything together? Or do I
just have to use the factory vortec computer and
wiring harness and "make" it work with my Jeep? Any one
out there got a "wiring diagram for dummies" for this
mod? Thanks for all your help, and keep on
Jeepin!!!
-OIIIIO-
