well. im certainly interested in the soft top but i had my heart set on making my own hard top, i really want to make it so it slopes right down to the engine grills in a coupe style. ill have a go and see how it goes... probably be a disaster.hhahaha. keep me upto date on the soft top tho, a ball park figure? would you be designing it around the 356 windscreen or the mini one that banham used to sell?
We have the original mould for the hardtop. This one stows in the car. Martin has also made a new mould. Being over 6ft - he wanted more head room. If you are interested please give us a call.
We will be talking to the trimmers about patterning a soft top. If anyone is interested - please let us know so we can estimate numbers etc.
At the moment we are still in Reigate the numbers are 01737 212782 or 07721 339633. We are moving soon - not sure of dates, but the mobile number wont change. Rowena
Anyone been on ebay recently. Paul's video has been put onto DVD.

great i know where to go for the hood then. for the hard top i was gonna make a very light steel frame, cover it in card and shape it with expandable foam then cover in the fibreglass but do it all on the car so i get a good fit. if it looks rubbish ill use it as a mould and shape it better .im desperate to make it an all year round car which i can do alot of milage in without feeling like ive been beaten up.hahahah. the originals skodas where good in the snow so theres no reason why with a bit more wieght in the front it shouldnt be 'liverable' with
matty.P (starting to sound a bit like a crack pot!hahah)
yeah - you would need to design a hood frame - although that is not as hard it sounds and I know some group members have done it. Don's Hoods in Erdington Birmingham are good for hoods.
Re. your plans for the hardtop, remember that the Banham is longer in the doors and rear section that other Spyders - this is because of the length of the Skoda floorpan, so that is what you need to design for.

yeah, ive seen one, i have a 356screen and surround and i fancied pushing my luck a little by taking the hard top all the way down to the rear vents.... kinda in a coupe styley. if you type into google pics 'porsche 550 coupe' youll get the sort of idea. i was planning on getting a hood made too at some point any recomendations? am i right to assume that i'll have to devise the hood 'frame'? i have been incredibly impressed with the cars and hoods that ive seen so far. it proves that british ingenuity is alive and very well.
matt- Paul Banham did supply a hardtop - but it was to fit a mini windscreen - I'll try and dig out a picture - not that flattering it has to be said. when all is said and done you may be as well getting a hood made. This is what some people have done and it looks nice.

maybe the weigh bridge i used was a bit dodgy, when i get it on the road properly ive got a friend who flat floors stuff so ill get an acurate set of readings. will let you all know about the outcome of the weight distribution too. it has a five speed box but your right it has the old suspension which causes a lot of camber on the rears. does anyone get probs from this severe camber?it looks like the wheels are toeing in a lot at the rear too (but i might be wrong about that as i havent had it checked either).
yeah, should be pretty nippy ;o) cant wait to get it on the road properly as the drive to the mot station has wet my appitite.

Matt - yeah - i have a vague recollection of speaking to you - your car is prob light as has earlier-type suspension and a 4-speed box. If you put in a 1300 136 engine it will be lighter still as head is alloy. Most spyders weight about 730kg to 850kg odd. Yours should certainly go nicely !

Hi every one i have posted 2 more pictures showing the air scoop i am
trying. I have fitted a high level brake light in the rear and heat
vents under it. The air should be forced in the front to feed the carb
and push the heat from the engine bay out the vents at the back. It
will also keep the water out of the engine bay. The car has just
passed the MOT so should be on the road soon. I am are just about to
show it at the New Forest show. Dave (Sparsholt College)

erm...based on a 120l estelle. theres nothing in it at the mo' as its still 'getting finished'. i have an ex race rally 13oo on motorbike carbs to go in once its all legal and i plan on making a long hard top for it too as i want it for my all year round ride (now that will be tough to do). you might have noticed on the photos in the background that i have a striker, i use that for being really silly in.hahahah.
hope to have mine legal for the harrowgate show and see others there too.
ian, are you the guy i spoke to at the donnington show lat year (red spyder). I had just bought a half built spyder off ebay that weekend and i wasnt sure what id bitten off?

685 kg is very light - which donor car did you use ? I may make harrogate this year.
Mick is right - i drove my Spyder 90 miles the other evening from Wirral back down to West Midlands and it was brilliant fun in this weather !

my car on the 3rd aug i should make it..... might even have my full
windcreen on by then...who knows.

BIS were some people that did a lot of work on Banham Spyders in the early
years, and produced some very nice examples - for example they produced the head
fairing, a sports exhaust and inlet manifolds for Weber DCOEs. They have now
gone back to the hot rod market however.

some photos now posted by me if you look in the folders - more to come
and to reply to Brian - yes you can use a Felicia 1.3 gasket on a
1989 136 rapid engine as they are the same engine !

Hi all
Just a quick question for the new group , !989 Rapid 136 engine and later
Felicia 136 engine - same head gasket or different ? just I've seem 2 part
numbers for the same head gasket .
Was going to post a picture of my Spyder but everone else's is much tidier and
pretty than mine besides its in disgrace in garage as a punishment for boiling
up on me 4 times in one week.
regards
Brian D.
99% finished, just waiting for a nice SVA man to give it the nod.

Hi everyone i have some parts off a j reg rapid i need to sell if
anyone is interested, i have a complete front end four pot calipers
etc, a four speed gearbox complete with axle and other skoda parts,
all glass, doors, rear lights, 2 heaters, headlights and good fuel
tank. many thanks Dave
Hi
I need a spacer that fits between the fuel pump and cylinder block on the skoda engine. Mine needs the thicker one with a 3 bolt fixing.
Anyone got one they don't need?
Peter
da-ve - there is no need to do this - there are ways around it - one
of which is to buy a SU carb on an A Series manfold and to cut and
shut it to the skoda manifold to produce a sidedraught solution hich
sosolves clearance problems. I will find a photo ans post it

Hi my name is Dave i am building a spyder at college where i teach
motor vehicles. We have nearly finished, we started in september 2005.
I am designing an air scoop for the back so that the engine will take
the skoda twin choke carb with no problems of height, the air will be
forced in to the engine bay and with vents down the back of the clam
shell the heat will be forced out. I will put on some pictures when
happy with design.I hope people will speak to me on this group not

Hi Ian, good idea and thanks. Ive now got two unfinished spyders here
in the Czech Republic. The first is already spoken for, and Im
undecided whether to finish or sell the second, it will depend on
interest.
I reckon even with my weight on board, a 1500 Kit Car engined spyder
should be a force to be reckoned with !
Cheers
John
Hello Ian and all and I hope this site does really well and encourages
all builders to get on wiv their cars so they can get out an enjoy them.
Take care Jay Ivey(Ex Spyder owner, the grey primer one that went to cz.)
as the previous banham spyder group
(www.smartgroups.com/spyderbuilders) was full up with pictures and
people were unable to post to it - this is designed as an alternate
site. Please feel free to post all of the queries and pictures that you
wish.
