Tell us more about your project. What year is your Beetle? What are you going
to do with it? Street Legal with mild off Roading?

I agree with Jeff, if this is your first experience with air cooled Volkswagen
Engines I'd recommend using a stock 1600cc Dual Port Motor. There are a lot of
"bolt on" options to get a little more power out of it. Keeping it near stock
will make it easier to maintain, and find parts for. The are very easy to work
on!
