I don't know about the rest of the membership of the list, but I find
this sort of spamming reprehensible and I hope the moderator can ban the
user who posted it. As if that will do any good, since it's almost
certainly a "drive by".

Don't mean to take any traffic away from this site (Sorry, Norm), but NASA now has a site for BGs as well. Would be nice if we could do some "cross talk" and get both sites rolling. Hope that everyone is doing well.
Hello Paul,
I have been working with Norm (bg36racer) on oil for his car. Since
these BG's have motorcycle engines with integral transmissions I
recommended to him to try AMSOIL's new-formula Synthetic 10W-40
Motorcycle Engine Oil. After he installed the AMSOIL in his car, his
oil temperature dropped 10 degrees F in spite of the fact that is was
over 90F outside (20 degrees hotter than the first time he ran the
car)...

Sorry, Paul, but I'm from the Southeast. For more oval racing info, I expect doing a Google search for MMRA and checking their schedule would be the best suggestion. As far as motor oils, most folks around here have Hank Scott modified engines. Google Hank Scott and give him a call. I know that he suggests 20w50 for break in. Don't recall when to change and what to change to.
Hello I am new to baby grand racing, I am looking for tips and places
to race. I live on the east coast and the car I purchased is set up
for scca road racing at Limerock park. I would love to race a few oval
track races this year, any idea where on the east coast there may be
some? All so looking for the type of motor oil that is good to run on
this motor.
Thanks for the info

Also, try minicup@... this is Pete Neimeier's e-mail. He's the head of the MMRA (the sanctioning body for Baby Grands. He's a good guy and he can tell you Lynn Egan's e-mail address. IIRC, she's with BG of Ca. She's the head of roadracing, IIRC.

Check with the folks at Baby Grands of California. I don't recall their URL, but a Google search should give you good results. I know of one personally in Atlanta and I've seen others in Texas. Best of luck and keep in touch.

I had a race shop weld two tow hooks on my chassis You can see where I had them added in photos labled Norms garage 7 and 11
I also had my window opening enlarged by the same race shop

Hello all,
Lefty and I are working on getting our BG ready for the 05 season and I was wondering about tow hooks, specifically in the rear. We plan on running mainly at Road Atlanta and Carolina Motorsports Park. Road Atlanta has particularly deep gravel traps, especially at Turn 5. Since the rear tow hook is so extremely low, was wondering if anyone was using an alternate location or what was being done to address how low this eye is. If you get good and buried in a trap, getting to this hook is going to be very tough. Also, due to its forward location, it seems that there would be the risk of the strap entangling the fuel cell as well. I've been thinking about bolting the rear bumper to the chassis (ours just slips on......don't know if that is still the standard or not.), but this area is
slightly gray in the rules. Anyone planning on running any BG events in the SE this year??
Scott, Glad to see you got your BG
I have one SCCA regional under my belt now.
Some issues came up during the event that maybe someone can shed some
light on.
The engine did run very hot as I have been told these engines do.
What's the limit? I'm running a suggested synthetic oil called Alisyn
Prodrive 21
The question is with running oil that hot should you change the Oil
after every event?
Also heavy braking after a straight The steering wheel would oscilate
left to right. At first I thought this was a braking issue but now I
may believe it's a steering rack issue. Can someone verify that if they
take one of the front wheels and turn it side to side that the bar
coming out of the steering rack housing will rotate back and forth
approx 3/16" ?
Autocrossing the car I felt no problem just braking from a high rate of
speed on the track.
I intend to post some pictures here as I think anyone else can to.
I had a conversation with Pete Neimeier of MMRA today and also with
one of the employees of ARP bodies (they make the new BG body). I
called the guys at ARP to see if I could get the hinges and latches
so I could retrofit a roof hatch to our BG with the old body. The
guy at ARP said that they use Velcro as the latch for the back of the
hatch. Upon reading the MMRA Pro Road Racing Rule Book, I found rule
9.3 (p.6, IIRC), which states "Velcro latches are not allowed". I
wrote to Mr. Neimeier about this and my paraphrasing of his response
was that they do have some I's to dot and T's to cross regarding the
rulebook, but that the competition committee will soon be convened to
address this. The NutDrivers have chassis #0084, which is an early
run chassis. Turns out, there is bracing now put around the fuel
cell that our chassis didn't come with. You can compare your
chassis's rear tube configuration to the pics under "Baby Grand" at
NutDriver.org to see if you have the newer or older style chassis.
If your chassis matches ours, I have a pic of the rear of the new
chassis that I'll be happy to share.

We welded an additional loop on the very back behind the fuel cell. It works as a recovery hook as well as a great place to tie down. On the front we welded a small piece of pipe on the frame horn and made a loop with a threaded shaft off the loop and a nut on the back. A small hole needs to be cut in the body to run this thru. Once again this makes a great tie tow point but must be taken off to remove the body. Checked to see if I had pictures but found none. Could follow if anyone interested!

I had my Baby Grand on the track for the first time!
Even though it was just for about 10 laps, and a few adjustments are
necessary What a blast!
The car felt a little twitchy but I know I have to align it better than
it is right now.
The other thing I noticed was that the only stop for the clutch pedal
seemed to be the sheet metal of the "Pedal Box"
Thanks Doug,
So far that's the only answer Ive gotten so far,
I would like to find a hinge that mounts from the inside that would
allow the roof flap to open the full way open (360 degrees)
I havent found a suitable latch yet either, I've seen pictures of
Funny
car escape hatch latches but in the pictures they seem huge.

a little hardware.
What grade gasoline is everyone using?
I have a Hank Scott motor, I don't know if that makes a difference but
have been told to use 100 octane gas

I have asked several people what they are doing about mounting their
shoulder harness to meet SCCA GCR specifications.
Any body else care to share how they mounted their shoulder harness?
Lynn Egan of babygrandracingofca.com posted some pictures on their
website of how they mounted their safety harness in their BG.

Lynn seems very responsive to questions and would recomend her input
to
any BG topic.
