There's not much I can say, but it won't be the same for years, probably not
in our lifetimes. It's very sad. I just renewed our agreement with the County
to adopt the road for another two years and was getting ready to arrange another
cleanup before the fire happened. The roads are closed indefinitely, so who
knows the next time we'll get up there...
Sept.10, 09 Newspaper indicates Newcomb's Ranch is there, covered with foam.
Picture doesn't show whole building, so I can't see if there was damage or not.

My beautiful Angeles Forest is gone. An area so beautful that I moved my family to Sunland/Tujunga in 1976 to ride the roads of the Angeles Crest. That's 33 years that I have lived here and ridden and loved those roads.
I have just found out that Newcomb's Ranch Inn has burned to the ground.
I have just found out that Hidden Springs Cafe has burned to the ground.

Too bad more of us can't make it, but we'll
keep it scheduled for tomorrow anyway. The weather should be nice. I'm not sure
where I'll stop, but I'll be there before 10 in my gray Mazda, in a suitable
turn-out. See you tomorrow.

My plans got changed on me and I will be out of town next weekend. I was
looking forward to the cleanup. It does look like that area may have gotten a
dusting today. I was downtown at California Plaza on Bunker Hill today and when
the clouds lifted, the snow on the mountain front was fairly low. It made for a
nice photo op of City Hall with the snow caped mountains in the distance. Too
bad I didn't have my camera with me.

We cleaned about half of our highway today. We stopped in a spot
halfway between the signs and cleaned to Angeles Forest Highway. Denis
and his son came, and my dad came also, so there were four of us. We
saw lots of cyclists and motorcycles. We found another piece of
bodywork from a GSX-R, probably from the same bike as last time I
guess. It was pretty warm, but we got out early enough that it wasn't
too bad.
I think it might be helpful for everybody if we plan these further in
advance. How about we schedule them for the 2nd Saturday, every 3
months? The next one will be September 13th. We'll plan that for now
and see how it goes as the day gets closer.
Thanks everybody for your participation.
Thanks for the map. I'm going to be there between 8:30 and 9 to find a
good spot to park and meet. It'll be somewhere in the middle of the
two miles, I don't know exactly where but it shouldn't be too hard to
find me; it's a pretty empty road and I'll make sure I'm in a decent
sized turnout so there's space.
I have gloves, bags and orange vests. We'll leave the filled bags on
the side of the road for the County to pick up and I hold onto the
gloves and vests for subsequent events. You don't need to bring
anything, but wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
Any last minutes questions, post tonight and I'll make sure to check
the site tonight and before I leave in the morning, around 7am.
Sorry guys, I won't be able to make it tomorrow, hope there is a better turn out than last time. Oh ya, wear a long sleeve shirt, those bushes will tear you up. See ya next time.

Welp, as I recollect, the clean-up area is on Angeles Forest Highwas, somewhere this side of BTC/AFH, not too far thoughs, right ?
Then you're going to be about a mile farther (which way) in "the big turn-out"
We still have the cleanup scheduled. We'll meet about halfway between the two signs that are at the ends of our two miles. I think everybody is coming from the south, on Angeles Crest Highway. Turn north/left onto UB Tujunga and about 7 miles down you'll see the first
sign. I'll stop at the biggest turnout I can find about a mile further, so 8 miles from ACrest. If anybody is coming from the north (I will be) you'd turn north off of Angeles Forest Highway and go just
1 mile up. I'll probably have my car on Saturday, so look for a gray Mazda. Around 9 I'll be there, as close as you can make it is fine. I'll have bags and gloves that we can use. Hope to see everybody
there. Any questions, please post.
Leonard Lucas Fourth Year Graduate Student California Institute of Technology 1200 E. California Blvd. MC 105-50 Pasadena, CA 91125 www.its.caltech.edu/~ljlucas/research.html
The meeting point will be about 1 mile from point 2 along the green
line. Upper Big Tujunga is the entire green line, and about 9 miles
long. Our section is the first 2 miles of UBT, starting from Angeles
Forest Highway. Do not confuse Upper Big Tujunga with (lower) Big
Tujunga Canyon Road.
My son and prossibly my daughter will be coming with me. So I will
be in a white Isuzu Trooper. I have gloves for my family. Do I need
any other tools? I don't have a yard, so my selection of outdoor
tools is small, but I do have a leaf rake, shovel, and for the pesky
vegetation, a machete. Let me know if I should bring anything.
