Is the bike a US model? I think the US models were not street legal, therefore don't have any battery or signals. Certainly, hooking that up would not be too...

I would be careful about your pounding...if you "mushroom" one end of that shaft, it may never come out! Try some heat...and some penetrating oil...such as...
