Yes, the gas tank decals are the one visible difference. I also read that the 1985's replaced the steel (stainless?) reeds with the fiberglass (boysen) style...

I concur with rushfann2. 1984 ==> "L" 1985 ==> "N" 1986 ==> "S" I worked at/hung around a Yamaha dealership in the mid-80s, and Yamaha (at least at that time)...
