I would put it between the switched hot and ground. If you install it before the switch it will be under a lot of load when the lights are off. It just shorts...

check fly wheel key and make sure stator plate is tight and is the center mark alighined with the cas mark if that ok cdi box !!! also my 82 it 250 did...
