Seattle motorcyclist killed in crash near Cannon Beach

By Bryan Denson, The Oregonian

October 07, 2009, 10:01PM
A Seattle man was killed Wednesday when he lost control of his Harley-Davidson Wednesday on U.S. 101 near Cannon Beach and slid under a pickup, authorities said.

Alan G. Gelvin, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene, Oregon State Police reported.

Gelvin was heading south about 3:20 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and slid into the northbound lane beneath the 2000 Toyota Tacoma driven by 62-year-old Edward Jones of Scappoose.

Police said Jones tried to steer out of the motorcyclist's way but could not. Jones and his wife Carol Jones, 59, were driven by ambulance to Seaside Providence Hospital for evaluation.

Highway 101 was closed until 5:40 p.m. as troopers investigated the crash.
