well i know your pain i have been going through the same... i found that it was
the fuel air mix screw once adjusted it got rid of the problem... also check
your intakes if there is a crack it could cause it to be random.

Robert- first check is for vacuum leak. Spray carb cleaner or starter fluid
around all parts of intake system from carbs to head. Increased idle indicates
air getting into system. Of course, you know to take care when using flammables,
right?
Next, check for carbs being balanced.
You might check previous posts here and at ViragoTech for the pilot jet mod for
early Viragos.
These are first things that come to mind, but I'm sure that others'll be chiming
in soon.

I don't know how many turns it takes for your bike, but for my 83 Xv 750 ,it went
like this....
First thing I did ,because the screws are hard to get to,is I bought a flexible
carb. screwdriver at the auto parts store.Next ,I used one of those mechanics
mirrors (almost like a dental mirror for looking around your mouth) to see the
head of the screw, this way you don't have to take them off every time.
Next screw both screws down very carefully and as soon as you feel it
tighten..STOP!
You have to be careful or you can destroy the seat.
Next back out 1 1/2 turns, and try to start your bike.
If it doesn't start, back out another 1/2 turn and so  on, till you can get it
running.
I'm sure you know the rest of the procedure from here, but get one of those
screwdrivers, makes things ALLOT easier....and don't feel bad,I took mine off at
least that many times....LOL....Mark in KC

the correct way to adjust the pilot screws on the '82 xv750 is to set both pilot
screws to 2 1/2 turns out from a soft seat [screw gently bottomed but not
tightened past just touching] then with a warm engine...starting with the rear
cylinder [#1 cylinder] turn the screw cockwise until the rpm falls off [lean]
then back the screw counterclockwise until you reach the highest rpm...turn it
1/8 turn more and go to the front cylinder [#2 cylinder] and repeat the
procedure...the pilot screws on the first generation hitachi carburetors control
only fuel delivery [the mixing with air takes place further on in the idle
circuit] so the adjustment is specific and precise and doesn't depend on the
needle metering air and fuel together

There is no actual factory set amount of turns out. They usually ran them fairly
lean at 1 and half turns out, but would vary sometimes between 3/4 and 2 turns
out.  I have found a good starting point is 2 and half to 3 turns out.
If you have a fairly trained ear on motors; let the engine warm up to operating
range temp, then start turning the screw out a quarter of turn at a time while
listening to engine rpm.
As long as the engine rpms are still rising, you can continue screwing out
quarter turns till you hear the rpms drop about 50.  Once you hear the rpms
drop, turn in half turn. I liked having mine jsut a little on the richer side
for better performance and less decal popping. The Honda method called idle drop
method, requires you, once you reach maximum idle rpms, that you turn the screw
back in one complete turn, then it is set.
These adjustments are the final ones made once you know that all other carb and
intake components are functioning properly.

When I had my 1100 the sissybar leaned back at an angle. That was one of my
wifes biggest complaints about the bike. She has had back surgery and has a pin
in her back. Has anyone seen a sissybar that stands up straight or close to it
so it would be more comfortable, or has anyone modified theirs to do this. This
is probaly the biggest reason she likes the Kawa Voyager that we have now.
Thanks, Mike

Hey Bill, I've got a 91 1100 with all the bells 23k miles, Santa Cruz shield and
soft bags, it is pretty clean but could probably use a carb tune. Getting a
little finecky with stale gas. Just replaced the battery this weekend and
enjoyed the fall weather. Oh, I live up in Janesville. What year Voyager do ya
have? I have been kinda keen on the new one, just need to hold off a few years
for the money. The Virago is great for comfort, just wish I could gear it down
for cruisin.  Good luck

I'm looking for an 1100 like my last one. I've been watching ebay and there have
been some around the country but the ones I've looked at within 100 miles that
look clean aren't clean when I get there. That makes me very skeptical to trust
photos and promises that it is a clean bike. The two I looked at (1996 and 1997)
looked clean in the pics but weren't even close when you saw them in person.
Thanks'

There is always a nice selection of them on ebay under the motors section.
Just choose Motorcycles, then Yamaha Virago. Stay with the 500 and up
models. The small 250 is nice but is a ladies or beginners learner bike.
And it is chain drive instead of shaft drive like the rest of them. You
should be able to get a beauty for one to two thousand. If the bike is all
original and has less than ten thousand miles you might pay a little more. Not
much more.

Mike- keep lookin', there's gotta be a nice one out there with only a few
thousand miles that you can pick up for a song.
While your Kawasaki is probably a nice bike for the kind of ridin' Voyager
riders like, it ain't a Virago. You know the difference.

fault) trying to improve them. I'll just keep lookin. If anyone knows of an
1100 around Chicago let me know. The wife even says we can keep my Kawasaki
Voyager too. Hmm, What's up with that? Mike

A man was riding his Harley along a California beach when
suddenly the sky clouded above his head... In a booming
voice, the Lord said, "Because you have tried to be
faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one
  wish."

The biker pulled over and said, "Build a
bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I
  want".

The Lord said, "Your request is materialistic. Think
of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the
supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific and the
concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it
is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things.
Take a little more time and think of something that could
  possibly help mankind."

The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally,
he said, "Lord, I wish that I, and all men, could
understand our wives; I want to know how she feels inside,
what she's thinking, why she cries, what she means when
she says nothings wrong, and how I can make a woman truly
  happy."
The Lord replied, "You want two lanes or four on that
  bridge?"

Here's just an idea from the Dennis Kirk catalog.

Seems like Jardine used to make some also, but not sure if they still do.
I'm not familiar with the ones above, just found them listed. Dan

ok so part came in tried to install it with the engine in the bike. i removed
the clutch and the main gear but there is a lip holding the gear in place so i
cant drop it down that way so guess ill have to drop the engine.but my wife told
me if i clean it up good first i can bring it into the bedroom hehehe. shes
gonna get me a like office chiars roll on it plastic floor thingy to work on.so
while i have it out ill go ahead and break the heads and check out
everything.might take awile to get everything done but while ive got the engine
out ill replace some worn things like the wireing harness ect.strip down the
frame to the metal go get a powder coat done to it ect. gonna also have to
replace the final drive unit i found a nut had come off it and the previous
owner drove it still and riped a couple the other studs and the metal. so this
is gonna extend the process along long time but when im done (hope spring time)
the bike will be right not just running but in real good shape. ill let yall
know how its going as i get work done to it. by the way is there a way i can
post some pdfs to the group? i have clymer, haynes, and yamaha repair manuals in
pdf form.

run the same thing at the same time once aligned why have both? the timing gear
thats in front is so thin alone it needs the intermetiate gear to do its job
right? so if something happoned to the timing gear but not intermediate gear and
its all still lined up do i still have to change it? i know i should but do i
have to? i ask cause im scared to pop the heads off this thing with 55k on it im
also worried about the imdeate cost with putting new gaskets/seal/may as well
overhaul it all at the same time costs.this is something i do want to do but
would rather wait to do that untill spring when i have a little more money saved
up for parts. i would worry about some of the parts off e-bay for a
rebuild/overhaul and would rather wait untill i can afford new parts for that.
