You dont have to put the shaft when removing the wheel. Remove the axle and the spacers, it all pulls apart...at least on my '95 1100. dawg...

The wheel separates from the rear drive unit. It is wise to inspect your sealed wheel bearings,(put finger in center of bearing and turn cking for smoothness)....
