those are the timing gears. One for the front cyl ( #2) and one for the rear cyl (#1) remember the motorruns backwards the front cyl closest to the front tire...

YES -- Gear MUST be fixed....Repeat MUST be fixed.....You DONT have to pull the heads off to change the gears or the chain...get your self a GOOD FACTORY...
