Right Coast Cars - Right Coast Report Newsletter

SYRACUSE NATS
DISPLAY AT SEMA...SUCCESS!!

The 2009 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) in Las Vegas, Nevada is in the books!  This year the entire Right Coast staff made the trip to the “left” coast to meet all of the companies and people who support the DuPont Hot Hues Syracuse Nationals by participating as vendors and/or sponsors.

For the first time ever, Right Coast had a display at the largest automotive industry show on the planet.

For the second year OPTIMA Batteries held their Ultimate Street Car Shootout at a private race track 1 hour outside Vegas.  Only fifty cars get to participate in this challenge to find the ultimate street car.

This year we are very excited to announce our 1927 Track-t roadster given away at the 2009 Syracuse Nationals was one of only 6 cars hand picked at SEMA to participate in this prestigious event.  Dave Tucci of Tucci Hot Rods in Marcy, NY who designed and built the car got behind the wheel at the exclusive Spring Mountain track.

Not only did Dave climb behind the wheel, he got in front of SPEED Channel’s cameras while they interviewed him before the competition to get his thoughts on the car and how it would perform against some of the most insane street cars in the county.

Look for Dave and the Track-T on the OPTIMA Battery Ultimate Street Car Shootout to air on SPEED, January 31st.

At our SEMA press conference we unveiled what will soon become one of the most prestigious awards in the hotrod and custom car community.  The Winfield Award will be given out annually at the DuPont Hot Hues Syracuse Nationals by master car customizer Gene Winfield.

After builders from around the country submit their entries, Gene will select only six to be feature vehicles at the 2010 show.  Once at the show, Gene will personally judge each vehicle to determine the winner of the inaugural Winfield Award trophy and $5,000 cash.

Builders, to submit your vehicle for consideration contact Bob O’Connor at 800-753-3978 or bob@....  All entries must be received by April 1, 2009.

“East Coast” Artie Schilling was also in our SEMA booth pinstiping up a storm all week, while promoting Artie’s Party Charity Panel Jam and Auction.  Thousands of people stopped by to chat with Artie while he worked his magic.  He was pinstiping phones, cameras,  and amazing aluminum panels all week long.  Some lucky SEMA goers even won some of his unique automotive artwork!

Make sure to visit Arties Party at the 2010 DuPont Hot Hues Syracuse Nationals in the Horticulture building and bid on some of the finest automotive artwork in the world for local children’s charity.

Bill,

I’ve used the 15w40 Rotella, also. Don’t think you could go wrong there. I’ve settled on the Tractor Supply 15w40 house brand diesel oil, because it’s not quite as dear as the Rotella.

Here’s a link: http://www.tractorsupply.com/vehicle-maintenance-accessories/vehicle-lubricants-oil/motor-oil/traveller-fleet-sae-15w-40-diesel-engine-oil-8360064

They have the Rotella, too, which is what I would use if I had just (dreaming now) spent big bucks on a new engine.

My 1600 takes 2 ½ quarts, plus a little more to top off after running it & letting the oil drain back.

Richard

Bill ??

   2 1/2 Quarts for all 1500 or 1600.

If the oil is very dirty: warm it up for 20-30 minutes, then let it drain for at least 4 hours, then add your fresh oil.

Depending on your driving habits, the manuals recommend different grades  for different temperatures  Summer, Fall, and Winter. Most users will uae one grade for the Summer-Fall, Straight 30, 10-40, 20-50,  or 10-30 Synthetic.

Your Choice.

Good evening all...

I have six (6) Late Ghia doors, three driver, three passenger, that are for sale (CHEAP) for and VWCCNY member that needs them. I will take $10.00 for each door, only for the balance of this week, after that they go on the Samba for $50.00 each. Most have glass, not sure if vert or coupe.

Thanks...

Hey bill. I use 20 w 50 because it is thicker and my bug is only driven in the sunny warm days. If you are running it now in the colder weather you can go 10w30 as it is thinner and turns over easier. I think most bugs take 4 liters. That is just a guess but not sure why that # is in my head. Go to the samba and search how much oil in my baha and there will be a lot of post on that.

Good luck.

And to those not interested I apologize for the added barrage of information re; sunshine treffen.

But I need to make sure it gets out at this time to all parties who may be interested.

This should be about the end of unsolicited Empire camping and VWCCNY copies of Sunshine Treffen preparation emails.

All additional Emails will be directed only to the Sunshine Treffen E-newsgroup (http://tinyurl.com/sunshine-treffen-EMAIL)

Stresses

  Travel Companions can’t make 2weeks??

o   My wife/husband/child/partner can't take 2 weeks from work, but I REALLY want to participate on the full trip.

o   Think of having them Fly down, the treffen arrives in Florida on the middle Friday, booking now airfare to (or from) FL is ~100 oneway.

o   so they can either travel the coastal byways and fly back, or you/we can pick them up at one of the nearby FL airports friday night.

o   Walt Disney World resorts has the Magical Express feature which will take them & baggage right to Fort Wilderness.

         Fort DeSoto [urgent]

o   Campground books quickly with the best water access sites 1st, as of 11/11/09 there are 105 sites available, but this park will likely be booked to capacity 2months out.

*RULES: Ft DeSoto does NOT issue refunds, only credit for cancellations.

Treffen Group is booking in loop2 (pet loop) $40/day

For Late bookers, Lake Manatee State Park in Bradenton, FL will have sites.

But may still book up in the last weeks before the trip

There will be some local VWs in the TENT (loop #1) $36/day

Website navigation isn’t smooth as others we’re used to. Goto: http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/default.htm

Select in Middle Left Nav-panel [FT De Soto Camping] Reservations - Reserve by Date

Site Registration will be required, process sends a [Purchase confirmation] from “Cybersource” then a 2nd email with [Site RSVP info] from “supportctr” at Pinellas county.

Amtrak Autotrain [urgent]          (runs about $400 1vehicle + 2 adults  AAA discount)

o   1 way fare for vehicle & passengers is pricey, but this train saves 850miles of I-95. The cut off for regular vs oversized vehicles is 182” (15ft2in) and when I measure a regular van w/o any hitch it comes in @ ~180”, but oversized may carry a smaller $$ vehicle charge if booked quickly. As of 11/11/2010 the train has 85% availability. (877) 754-7495

Seating is assigned at check in, arrive as a group sit as a group, AAA discount applies to seating charges.

There is a dinner provided, the train travels through the night. (Depart 4pm -- Arrive 9:30am)

Fort Wilderness campsites [fairly urgent]               (Partial hookup tent/van camper)

o   Get RSVP soon, only 2 “Partial” loops (2000,&1500) they are not near each other.

o   Call (407) 939-7675 and request to “LINK” with Grand Gathering “VW Family#996074

o   Request AAA discount, they have them in limited allotments. (Save $10/nt)

o   Sign up for new volunteering promo alerts and then on 1/1/2010 log in and select WDW Volunteering selection.

  Questions? Here: http://tinyurl.com/WDW-give-a-day-FAQ

o   *Purchase your WDW tickets separate from your site reservation to assure volunteer program works.

         Edisto Beach campground

o   MUST call (843)869-2156 to RSVP site For [1] day booking (4/27 to 4/28) (Beach loop)

         Jekyll Island campground

o   Booking is via call or website, website process is a little clunky. But does work thru.

         Allentown KOA

o   Closed till April 1st 2010, but can still book site online or by phone.

o   This is NOT a busy season for the KOA and sites should be available in April 2010.

         Gettysburg campgrounds

o   Many private campground options, but none chosen at this point.

o   Some VWs may wish to push on home instead of another day on the road.

Thoughts of Florida sunshine.

I could definitely see being a snowbird,

As our NY VW events wind down in Sept & Oct the central/northern Fl events pick up

But in 5 months a motley crew of NY (and other points north) VWs will be participating in one of the longest VW events.

VW Sunshine Skyway Treffen 2010 April 23rd thru May 9th

We have 10 VW campers & families from Central NY signed up and making bookings, with some from other areas either signed up or on the fence.

Some will meet us part way, others from clubs along the way. Taking the route less interstate, about 200 miles each day with stops in some of the most scenic beaches, historical landmarks and national parks. There is still plenty of room and time to get on board, but after the New Year parks will begin to be booked full for our dates in April/may 2010. Contact dan@... for interest & direct Q&As

This is a loosely formatted VW adventure, more of a Driving rally then a parade or caravan. the only constant is each days destination.
truly a make it your way kind of adventure, participants are encouraged to set their own pace, and see as much along the way as possible. with each day broken into ~200mile driving days, in a southerly linear fashion, it takes the rush out of the long route from NY to FL.

Participant list atm: (10+ VWs)

Dan&Michelle,Mom,Bob, Aaron&kim,Kevin,Andy&susan,Scott&pati,Dixons,Bryan Belman,Charles&Jill Ray,Giovanna,Roger layne ( way)

With some people still on the fence and some joining for a day or more along the route.

Nightly stays

Assateague National seashore, Outer banks, Carolina beach, Edisto beach, Jekyll Island, Manatee Springs, Fort De Soto, Fort Wilderness @ Walt Disney World, Gettysburg national battlefield

Also member Bill Waelder works at the Everson Museum (http://www.everson.org/home.php ) and wants to see if there’s any interest in the VW club to come and view the current rare and unique art exhibit (Turner to Cezanne). This should be just the thing for that early winter Blahhs..

Current Exhibitions: http://www.everson.org/exhibitions/current.php

The Everson is pleased to present Turner to Czanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales this fall. In preparation for this unique exhibition, the museum is closing the second-floor galleries for renovations from May 15—October 3, 2009.

Remarkable for its breadth and the quality of its works, the Davies collection at National Museum Wales is an extraordinary group of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings collected largely between 1908 and 1923 by sisters Margaret and Gwendoline Davies. By 1914 the Davies sisters had assembled one of the finest collections of European modern art in Britain, including works by the modern masters Paul Czanne, Camille Corot, Honor Daumier, Edouard Manet, Jean-Franois Millet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Joseph M.W. Turner, Vincent van Gogh, and James Abbot McNeill Whistler among others.
